Notes: Summary When glucose and fructose are fermented separately, the uptake profiles indicate that both sugars are utilized at similar rates. However, when fermentations are conducted in media containing an equal concentration of glucose and fructose, glucose is utilized at approximately twice the rate of fructose. The preferential uptake of glucose also occurred when sucrose, which was first rapidly hydrolyzed into glucose and fructose by the action of the enzyme invertase, was employed as a substrate. Similar results were observed in the fermentation of brewer's wort and wort containing 30% sucrose and 30% glucose as adjuncts. In addition, the high levels of glucose in the wort exerted severe catabolite repression on maltose utilization in theSaccharmyces uvarum (carlsbergensis) brewing strain. Kinetic analysis of glucose and fructose uptake inSaccharomyces cerevisiae revealed aK m of 1.6 mM for glucose and 20 mM for fructose. Thus, the yeast strain has a higher affinity for glucose than fructose. Growth on glucose or fructose had no repressible effect on the uptake of either sugar. In addition, glucose inhibited fructose uptake by 60% and likewise fructose inhibited, glucose uptake by 40%. These results indicate that glucose and fructose share the same membrane transport components.

Notes: Abstract This paper introduces a strategy for the construction of object-oriented knowledge frameworks. Global control programs, which are traditionally used for manipulating structured representations, have been replaced by domain-specific resources. This new approach offers increased efficiency and simplified development of knowledge-based expert systems for problem domains that deal with a variety of complex structured information. A theoretical foundation is laid for the representation of knowledge, starting with the adoption of a simple schema for structuring stereotypical information. Data and method abstraction is achieved by installing knowledge frames into part of an object-oriented class system that supports procedural attachment and object communication. This allows frame specialization using domain-specific resources and subsequent construction of modular systems with these specialist frames. Editors are introduced for the alteration of data primitives used in declarative representation. Algorithms, which operate on these data primitives, are given for frame instantiation, data access, and user-directed inference. Examples from structural engineering are used throughout the paper to illustrate the practical application of object-oriented knowledge frameworks.

Notes: Abstract Intertidal algae experience aerial temperatures as well as those of ambient seawater and, during their periods of emergence, are subject to considerable variation in salinity. The eastern Atlantic distribution ofFucus vesiculosus L. (Phaeophyta) lies within the 5° and 20° August isotherms. Experiments indicate that this plant can survive temperatures above and below these at normal salinity (34‰). However, at extreme temperatures it is evidently much more susceptible to saline changes than at those of the limiting isotherms. Thus the temperature limits for surviving acute saline change appear to give a better biogeographical fit than temperature alone. Nevertheless, the presence ofF. vesiculosus in estuaries at or near both geographical limits is inconsistent with the experimental results obtained from British plants. Some population divergence may therefore have occurred.

Notes: Abstract The success ofElachista fucicola as an epiphyte ofFucus vesiculosus is partly due to its ability to grow on most parts of the host thallus. Its ability to reach reproductive maturity quickly ensures its fitness, even on temporary structures such as receptacles. Epiphyte distribution may also vary with host morphology.Himanthalia elongata is a basiphyte for several tissue-specific epiphytes:Ectocarpus fasciculatus, Elachista scutulata, Herponema velutinum andMyriactula areschougii are exclusive, or almost so, to receptacles. On growing receptacles their specificity extends to conceptacles, which also provide refuges from grazing. Epiphyte abundance in summer is greatest at the upper and lower limits ofHimanthalia distribution, suggesting that basiphytes living under suboptimal conditions are more prone to infestation by epiphytes. 5–10% ofHimanthalia receptacles are thought to persist over winter and so to facilitate the transmission of epiphytes to the following year's crop of receptacles. The distribution ofEctocarpus fasciculatus onLaminaria digitata differs in pattern from that onHimanthalia. The twoEctocarpus populations also differ morphologically, but both have reproductive and developmental, characteristics that are in accord with the ecological cycles of their basiphytes. This characteristic is likely to be an important factor in determining the success of an epiphyte. Success may also be facilitated by epiphyte variability or by possession of a fixed but well-adapted phenotype. The very high incidence of brown algal epiphytes on growingHimanthalia receptacles does not reflect the composition of the surrounding algal vegetation. The possibility that some host-recognition mechanism operates cannot be discounted.

Notes: Abstract The activity of anodic oxide films on nickel, iron and copper metal anodes in cryolite-alumina melts was calculated using values of the reversible potential obtained from a polarization scan of the corresponding metal electrode. The best results were obtained with prepolarized electrodes. The anodic oxide layer formed on nickel becomes thick and dense and remains adherent during the period of prepolarization. Similar activity calculations were made for selected nickel-, iron- and copper-cermet compositions containing either a MnZn ferrite or a nickel ferrite ceramic phase. Large activities were observed for a NiO type corrosion product on both the nickel and nickelcermet electrodes. The results suggest that a dense surface layer containing a NiO phase is formed on nickel-cermet electrodes. This layer may help lower corrosion by minimizing electrolyte penetration of the anode surface.

Notes: Abstract The quasilinear theory of acceleration of relativistic particles by hydromagnetic turbulence is treated in the adiabatic limit of small gyration radius. The theory is based on the relativistic Vlasov equation; however, a given pitch-angle scattering rate by microturbulence is postulated and is added to this equation. The resulting acceleration is found to be given by a diffusion coefficient in total momentum, which is proportional to the spectrum of turbulence with a rate coefficient γ. γ is a frequency that represents the efficiency of each wave component of the turbulence in producing acceleration. It is given as an integral over the solution of a differential equation in pitch angle. γ is evaluated in various limiting cases and is shown to lead to familiar forms of acceleration, such as Fermi acceleration and magnetic pumping. Thus, a comprehensive theory of these forms of heating is achieved.

Notes: Summary Increased muscarinic sensitivity has been associated with altered hormonal states (hypothyroidism and hyperadrenocorticism), chronic administration of muscarinic antagonists or antidepressants with muscarinic actions, selective breeding for anticholinesterase sensitivity, and certain inbred strains of rats and mice. Thus, both genetic and environmental factors may influence muscarinic receptor sensitivity. The reasonably detailed studies on the selectively-bred rats have revealed that the Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats weigh less, are less active, are more sensitive to muscarinic agonists and to stressors, and have higher concentrations of hippocampal and striatal muscarinic receptors than ‘normal’, or the selectively-bred, Flinders Resistant Line (FRL) rats. Thus, there are a number of parallels between FSL rats and depressed humans. The FSL rats may be the first animal model of depression to mimic the actual trait of depression, and not just the state.
