Notes: Summary The low molecular weight heat shock protein (HSP) profiles of the hexaploid wheat cultivar “Chinese Spring” and its ditelosomic series were characterized by isoelectric focusing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of denatured in vivo radiolabeled proteins. Comparisons of the ditelosomics (DTs) to the euploid “Chinese Spring” enabled the assignment of genes controlling 9 of the 13 targeted HSPs to seven chromosome arms. There did not appear to be a genome-specific action in the regulation of expression of these HSPs. There did appear to be a higher frequency of controlling genes within homoeologous DT lines 3, 4 and 7. Significant variation in protein quantity was evident among the DT lines for some HSPs, while other HSPs were remarkably stable in their expression across all DTs examined. The results are useful in identifying specific DT lines for the investigation of HSP functions in hexaploid wheat.

Notes: Thermal and mechanical studies on many linear polyesters have revealed their behavior in crystalline, liquid crystalline, and amorphous phases. Their phase behavior in binary compositions has also been studied by a range of additional techniques and in combinations including the polycarbonate of bisphenol-A. Regions of amorphous compatibility and incompatibility have been identified and measures made of transition temperature changes with composition. The conditions for transreaction have also been determined and the properties measured for the resultant new copolymers.

Notes: Flow irregularities have been visually observed in solutions of polyacrylamide of high molecular weight on shear in a cone-and-plate rheometry (gap angle 2.3°). This anomalous flow was found to depend on molecular weight, concentration, and solvent. The onset of flow irregularities were generally at shear rates 〈 5 sec-1. A dimensional analysis shows that the elastic component of the fluid is responsible for the anomalous flow. The onset of flow irregularities has been predicted from measurements of recoverable strain as a function of shear stress.

Notes: Single polymer composites have been prepared using different morphologies of polyethylene as matrix and as the reinforcement. Depending on annealing conditions, the ultraoriented fibers used as reinforcement can have higher melting points (ca. 139°C) than the matrix made from the same conventionally crystallized high-density polyethylene (ca. 132°C) or from low-density polyethylene (ca. 110°C). The optimum temperature has been assessed for bonding to occur by growth of transcrystalline regions from the melt matrix without considerable modulus reduction of the annealed ultraoriented and reinforcement fiber or film. Pullout tests have been used for determining the interfacial shear strength of these single polymer composites. The interfacial shear strength for the high-density polyethylene films embedded in a low-density polyethylene matrix is 7.5 MPa and for high-density polyethylene self-composites is 17 MPa. These values are greater than the strength for glass-reinforced resins. The strength is mainly due to the unique epitaxial bonding which gives greater adhesion than the compressive and radial stresses arising from the differential shrinkage of matrix and reinforcement. The tensile modulus of composites prepared from uniaxial and continuous high-density polyethylene films embedded in low-density polyethylene obeys the simple law of mixtures and the reinforced low-density polyethylene modulus is increased by a factor of 10. High strength cross-ply high-density-polyethylene - low-density-polyethylene laminates have also been prepared and the mechanical properties have been studied as the film orientation is varied with respect to the tensile axis.

Notes: Amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been solid state coextruded to a series of draw ratios up to 4.4 at 50, 60, 70 and 90°C. These uniaxially drawn samples have been examined by optical microscopy and light scattering and for increases in crystallinity and birefringence as a function of draw ratio and draw temperature. The birefringence for PET may be among the highest yet reported - 0.21.

Notes: Understanding the deformation behavior of an amorphous thermoplastic, e.g., poly(ethylene terephthalate) (a-PET) and one of semicrystallinity, viz., i-PP, can be is of both fundamental and practical importance. Much has been done to study the influence of temperature and strain, but not the influence of deformation conditions on the three-dimensional orientation of many thermoplastic. In this study we consider the incremental effect of hydrostatic pressure and process geometry on strain-induced deformation. a-PET has been free drawn (i.e., no hydrostatic pressure) isothermally on a tenter frame device. The hydrostatic, equibiaxial deformation was achieved by a forging process involving squeezing between two circular plates. These two processes have been carried out at a series of deformation rates, with the three-dimensional refractive index measurements having been made on the PET and i-PP films using a modified Abbe refractometer, as per Samuels. The reported trirefringence measurement provides a sensitive scale for the planar deformation.

Notes: A polytheylene composite was prepared and tested. It was consisted of a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix and uniaxial gel-spun high-modulus PE fiber. Aided by the similarity between matrix and fiber, transcrystallization of HDPE melt on the PE fiber surface was generated. Nucleating agents were not employed. The transcrystalline growth of HDPE on the PE fiber surface was found to consist of an inner and an outer zone. The inner zone, 2-3 μm thick, is composed of HDPE crystals nucleated on the PE fiber surface. Photomicrographs showed a well-defined region of row-nucleated HDPE on the surface of PE fiber. This means the fibrils of HDPE were found to grow out from the PE fiber axis and HDPE crystallites are oriented in planes perpendicular to the PE fiber axis. The fiber in the composite induced the transcrystalline growth of HDPE on the PE fiber surface at higher temperature than on cooling the melt. For 36 wt% fiber, the increase was 2.5°C, also resulting in ∼ 10% more crystals. Crystallization of a composite with 50 wt% fiber at 124°C involved two steps: The first a fast transcrystallization of HDPE on the PE fiber surface followed by the bulk crystallization of the HDPE.

Notes: Using fast atom bombardment (FAB) ionization combined with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), the identity of arsenobetaine (AB) in extracts of sole, haddock, lobster and shrimp was unequivocally confirmed. Evidence was also presented for the presence of arsenocholine (AC) in the shrimp extract. Confirmation was obtained by comparing the collision-induced dissociation (CID) daughter ion and parent ion spectra of major ions in the FAB spectra from these extracts with those from the authentic standards.
