    Notizen: Ethylene-propylene copolymers prepared with syndiotactic specific catalysts contain both head-to-tail and tail-to-head oriented propylene units. Consequently, this copolymerization is, actually, a terpolymerization, and the propylene polymerization is a binary copolymerization.The consequences of this fact on the kinetics of polymerization and copolymerization are considered.

    Notizen: In order to elucidate the relations between morphological habits, thermal behaviour and chemical structure of polymers, aliphatic polyesters with variable amount of trans-double bonds along the backbone chain were crystallized from dilute solutions in 1-propanol and 1-butanol. The crystals were studied with electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide angle X-ray diffraction. The morphology of solution grown single crystals and some thermodynamic quantities such as the equilibrium dissolution and melting temperature and the enthalpy and entropy of fusion are influenced by the percentage of unsaturated comonomer. The thermal behaviour and the X-ray diffraction of these crystals suggest that saturated and unsaturated repeating units are able to cocrystallize.

    Notizen: In the present paper we have investigated the role that the presence of trans double bonds plays on the glass transition temperature of linear polyesters. Experimental data indicate that the glass transition temperature is increased by an increase of the unsaturation concentration. The effect is not drastic but it is well detectable. This result is discussed taking into account the chain microstructure and the bulk structure effects.

The results do not show any simple relation between unsaturation and mechanical response. Particular attention was given to the α-transition, that is a glass transition, and experimental data suggest that the generally accepted mechanism for this transition requires a more extensive study.

    Notizen: Base functionalization of saturated ethylene-propylene rubbers (EPR) was performed either by means of the radical grafting of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate onto EPR or by the reaction of a succinic anhydride grafted EPR with N,N-dimethylethylenediamine. Differences in the structure of the grafted molecules and in their thermal stability are also reported. An investigation is made on the reactivity of EPR having tertiary amino pendant groups toward acid functionalized EPR leading to gelation.

    Notizen: The dynamic mechanical relaxations of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(1,4-cyclo-hexylenedimethylene terephthalate) (PCHDMT), and a copolymer of them (COP) were measured in the temperature range from -150 to 150°C by use of a dynamic viscoelastometer. The viscoelastic relaxations of COP are studied and compared with those of PET and PCHDMT. The anisotropy of the viscoelastic properties of stretched COP samples was also studied in order to distinguish between main and secondary relaxations.

    Notizen: The dynamic mechanical properties of ethylene/propylene copolymers prepared by soluble catalysts based on vanadium salts and alkylaluminium compounds were investigated. The properties of the copolymers were found to depend not only on the chemical composition, but also on the polymerization temperature and on the stereoregulating character of the catalyst. The mechanistic implications of these findings are discussed.

    Notizen: Fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry is, for the first time, successfully applied to the underivatized anthracycline antibiotics retamycins E1 and E2, using bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphide as the matrix compound. The spectra are characterized by abundant protonated molecular ions and also by a number of sequence ions, which can be easily rationalized in terms of the carbohydrate sequence in the molecules. The relative abundance of these ions seems to depend on the functionalities close to the glycosidic oxygen, and also on their stereochemical relationship. Structural results are also confirmed by the analysis of the FAB mass spectra of the acetyl derivatives.

    Notizen: TSH is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone, whose dissociated subunits are without biological activity. This has precluded the assessment of the relative contribution of each subunit to hormone action. We have raised anti-idiotypes to monoclonal antibodies specific, respectively, for the α and β hTSH subunits. The anti-β anti-idiotype inhibited l25I-hTSH binding to the β subunit-specific monoclonal quantitatively, whereas 125I-hTSH binding to the α subunit-specific monoclonal was not inhibited by anti-α anti-idiotypes, suggesting that only the former is an “internal image” anti-idiotype. Neither of the two anti-idiotypes nor equimolar mixtures thereof inhibited 125I-bTSH binding to thyroid membranes, even though radiolabelled anti-idiotypes showed saturable binding to thyroid plasma membrane which was inhibited 41-65% by bTSH. Each anti-idiotype alone caused 9% inhibition (compared to 50% by NRIgG) of thyroid plasma membrane adenylate cyclase. Equimolar mixtures (125 μg/ml IgG of each anti-idiotype) induced enzyme activity equivalent to 85% of that of 250 mU/ml of TSH. The TSH-like action of the two anti-idiotypes was also reflected in their capacity to increase (450% by 250 μg/ml IgG compared to normal rabbit IgG) the uptake of 131I into isolated thyrocytes and to promote the organization of such cells into follicular structures. At 250 μg/ml, anti-β anti-idiotype promoted the organization of small follicles and only at a concentration of 500 μg/ml did it enhance 131I uptake. Anti α idiotype was without effect in both assays. Lastly, mixture of anti-idiotypes bound to the ∼ 197,000 Mr band (TSH holoreceptor) on protein blots of thyroid plasma membranes resolved on NaDSO4-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under non-reducing conditions. Individual anti-idiotypes were without effect.The TSH α and β subunits apparently deliver two cooperative signals to the receptor and that specificity is associated with the β subunit, while the α subunit is important in enhancing receptor affinity for the heterodimer and in stablizing TSH-receptor complex.
