Notes: Abstract 40Ar-emulsion interactions are studied, to investigate the question of anomalons, in twoG- 5 emulsion stacks. In about 4600 primary interactions, projectile fragments of Z≧2 for all generations have been followed until they interact or leave the stack. After careful estimation of charges of these fragments, variation of their mean free paths is studied as a function of distance from the preceding interaction. Generation effect,N h dependence and production angle effect are investigated. In addition multi-chain events are analysed separately. Our results do not show anomalons at the 6% level and are consistent with non-occurrence of anomalons. However, this experiment is not sensitive enough to rule out anomalons (with a mfp of the order of 2 to 3 cm) produced at about 1% (or less) level.

Notes: Abstract The forward energy flow cross section is described in terms of the projectile-nucleon abrasion probability which is calculated in the impact parameter representation within the framework of the Glauber multiple scattering formalism. Realistic nuclear densities and the nucleon-nucleon inelastic cross section have been used in the calculation. The recent WA80 data are in reasonable agreement with the calculation. A simple relationship has been obtained between the abrased nucleons from the target and projectile and the zero degree energy.

Notes: Abstract The elementary reaction pp→nΔ + +, through which the6Li(p, Δ + +)6He reaction proceeds, is considered as the flip of spins and isospins of two quarks, one in each of the two quark bags of the interacting nucleons. Using the experimental data on the6Li(p, Δ + +)6He reaction at 1.04 GeV and the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) for the reaction mechanism, the strength of the spin-isospin quark-quark interaction is determined. It is found to be 70 MeV fm3.

Description: An extensive study has been carried out to validate a satellite technique for estimating downward longwave radiation at the surface. The technique, mostly developed earlier, uses operational sun-synchronous satellite data and a radiative transfer model to provide the surface flux estimates. The satellite-derived fluxes were compared directly with corresponding ground-measured fluxes at four different sites in the United States for a common one-year period. This provided a study of seasonal variations as well as a diversity of meteorological conditions. Dome heating errors in the ground-measured fluxes were also investigated and were corrected prior to the comparisons. Comparison of the monthly averaged fluxes from the satellite and ground sources for all four sites for the entire year showed a correlation coefficient of 0.98 and a standard error of estimate of 10 W/sq m. A brief description of the technique is provided, and the results validating the technique are presented.

Description: The reported investigation had the objective to develop an accurate radiative transfer model for the thermal infrared region using a quasi-random band model. It is intended to use this model to examine the sensitivity of the outgoing radiance and flux density to the perturbations of such meteorological parameters as the surface emittance and temperature, atmospheric water vapor distribution, cloud altitude and fractional cover, and the concentrations of other infrared active constituents. The outgoing infrared flux and limb darkening functions obtained from this model agree well with the satellite measured data. Important sensitivity parameters obtained agree with the results of the various empirical and theoretical models. It is concluded that the effect of cloud depth should be taken into account to obtain better agreement with the measured limb darkening functions.
