Notizen: A micropore membrane procedure to assay taxis by Entamoeba histolytica is described and the results of studies of responses to a variety of soluble substances, bacteria, an rat colon washings using this procedure are reported. Trophozoites migrated in blind well chambers through 8-m̈m pore size polycarbonate membranes but not nitrocellulose membranes up to 12 m̈m pore size. Amoebae were attracted toward fresh axenic culture medium (TYI-S), an enzymatic hydrolysate of casein (Trypticase), and a partially purified preparation of N-acetylneuraminic acid from egg mucin, but not purified N-acetylneuraminateora variety of other low molecular weight metabolites. The response was verified as chemotaxis by checkerboard analysis. Amoebae migrated most dramatically toward suspensions of all of seven bacterial species tested, including motile and non-motile, gram-negative and gram-positive rods and cocci. This response was diminished when the bacteria concentration gradient was eliminated. The response to bacteria culture filtrates was less than 10% of that to bacterial suspensions. A response to clarified washings from the rat colon was detected; this was diminished but not eliminated by filter sterilization of the washings. We concluded that some soluble molecules, possibly of intermediate molecular size, whole bacteria, and both soluble and paniculate components of the rat colon provide tactic stimuli for E. histolytica. Scanning electron micrographs of trophozoites migrating towards attractants through membranes showed narrow', extended pseudopodia entering the membrane pores, and enlarging spheres exiting as the cells proceeded through.

Notizen: Gold, as a trace element, is not directly detectable by geophysical borehole logging techniques. Geophysical logging methods have therefore been used to infer the presence of structural features and alteration processes associated with gold. Since these features and processes differ with the style of gold mineralization, a unique relation between geophysical anomalies and gold cannot be established. However, in a particular environment, such an association can be established. We examined geophysical log data (self potential, induced polarization, resistivity, gamma, temperature, and temperature gradient) and drill core from the Barber-Larder property in NE Ontario. The geophysically detectable alteration processes associated with gold were identified as sericitization and pyritization, by means of factor analysis. A linear discriminant function was constructed which allowed the zones of economic mineralization (nominally 0.05 oz/ton or 1.5 ppm) to be identified with a 75% success rate based on geophysical log data alone. This rate was achieved without sophisticated non-linear data transformations.

Notizen: Various exact methods of inverting the complete waveform of vertical seismic reflection data to produce acoustic impedance profiles have been suggested. These inverse methods generally remain valid for nonvertical, plane-wave data, provided total reflection does not occur. Thus, in principle, the “seismogram” at each ray parameter in a slant stack can be interpreted separately.Rather than invert each plane-wave seismogram separately, they can all be interpreted simultaneously and an “average” model thus obtained. Inversion for both the velocity and the density also becomes possible when two or more plane-wave seismograms are simultaneously inverted. The theory for a noniterative inversion method, based on the time-domain Riccati equation, is discussed. Numerical examples of inversions using this technique on synthetic data demonstrate its numerical stability and the advantage of simultaneous inversion of several seismograms to reduce the effect of noise in the data and increase the stability of the inversion process.

Notizen: The analytical solution, for the H-polarization magnetotelluric impedance, of a series of multiple, vertical, conducting slabs (dikes) embedded in a host medium is extended to an infinite array in order to model an anisotropic layer. The solution is used to study the effects of such strongly anisotropic media on the surface impedance. At low frequencies such vertically laminated structures behave as a bulk material. It is shown that the effective bulk parameters are those expected from d.c. theory. However, practical electrode separations may not be long enough or adequately positioned to correctly obtain these bulk parameters from the measured impedance. Thus, such structures can masquerade as quite different one-dimensional structures. A haphazard use of long electrode spacings will not necessarily produce correct results.

Notizen: This article is concerned with British trade union membership statistics. It provides three different estimates of trade union density and considers their meaning and significance. It also assesses the reliability of union membership figures, and finally it provides fresh data on the unemployed membership of trade unions.

Notizen: : A decade of Thatcherism has produced a range of measures that directly and indirectly have had a significant impact on industrial relations institutions and outcomes. Economic growth in the private sector has been attributed in part to the development of a new era of industrial relations, one in which former patterns of job control, pay determination, strikes, and union membership have altered significantly and probably permanently. It was unlikely that the public sector would remain immune from such changes, particularly given the notoriety that industrial relations in this sector achieved during the 1970s.This paper will examine the main developments in public sector industrial relations over the last two decades, concentrating on pay, and its associated outcomes, and on the performance of the institutions through which pay is determined. Throughout, the emphasis will be on assessing how far the changes that have occurred have tackled the perceived problems of the 1970s, or met the new requirements of the 1980s.By way of introduction, section 1 summarises the main features of the UK public sector which relate to pay. Data on pay outcomes for the period 1970-88 for the main occupational groups are provided in Section 11. A description of the evolution of pay determination machinery is given in Section 111, which concludes with a brief look at one indicator of the success or failure of these institutional arrangements, namely strikes. The fourth section deals with the criteria by which pay has been determined over the last twenty years, noting the interaction between these and the institutional arrangements. Finally, we look briefly at one other outcome, productivity, as one indicator of how well public sector industrial relations are geared to improving organizational performance.
