Notes: The dynamics of a system of two microbial populations having complementary metabolism are investigated by means of simple mathematical models of growth. Complementary metabolism as used here means that each population produces a substance - not present in the initial or feed medium - required by the other for growth. The simple models indicate that (1) something other than lack of the substrate or growth factor produced by its partner must limit the growth of at least one population and (2) the coexistence steady state of such populations in continuous culture is not stable with respect to large perturbations, though it is stable with respect to a wide range of perturbations.

Notes: The use of another air operated extreme pressure hydraulic pump fitted with either a needle valve or a simple microbore tube is described, together with the figures obtained for the soluble protein released from suspensions of commercially obtained baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The theory of the mechanism is also discussed.

Notes: A compartmental dispersion model of longitudinal mixing in tube networks has been developed. The ability of this model to predict the impulse response of helium, benzene vapor, and sulfur hexafluride tracer gases in two and in five generation symmetric network models of the large airway system of the lung has been tested over an air flow range of 1 to 400 ml/s.The results imply that velocity profile distortion and secondary flows in branching regions have only a small effect upon the overall longitudinal mixing when flow is directed toward the higher-order generations. On the other hand, accurate prediction of the data requires adequate treatment of the finite rate of evolution of the Taylor dispersion occurring in these tube networks.

Notes: Copolyamides of nylon 6,6 with bis(2-carboxyethyl)methylphosphine oxide (CEMPO) were prepared by melt polycondensation of nylon 6,6 salt with CEMPO and hexamethylene diamine. The effect of CEMPO upon melting point, moisture regain, boiling water shrinkage, water wicking, tensile properties, thermal stability, static dissipation, and flammability of nylon 6,6 fibers and fabrics was determined. The fiber properties were greatly affected by the high water absorption and solubility characteristics of the phosphine oxide linkage. However, crystallinity and orientation were not greatly disturbed by up to 30-40M% CEMPO substitution in nylon 6,6. The copolyamides were of improved flame resistance compared to nylon 6,6 and were also found to give improved flame resistance in blends of the copolymer with various commercial plastics. In addition, CEMPO and the corresponding diamine, bis(3-aminopropyl)methylphosphine oxide were used to prepare a series of cycloaliphatic and aromatic ring-containing polyamides, but problems were encountered with moisture sensitivity and low melting points with some of these polymers.

Notes: The formation of hydrous Zr(IV) oxide-polyacrylate dynamic membranes was studied by the dependence of water flux decline and steady-state water flux on the concentration of poly(acrylic acid) in the feed. Analysis of the results indicates that the poly(acrylic acid) enters the pores of the hydrous Zr(IV) oxide layer, rather than forming a second layer. This configuration was consistent with scanning electron micrographs of the surface.

Notes: A thermoplastic polymer, Delrin 150 (polyoxymethylene homopolymer), with creep resistance ten times that of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene, is used as a material for total joint protheses. A study was made of the local and systemic host response to this polymer when implanted in three different mammalian species. 316 LC stainless steel was used as a control. The materials were implanted into muscle and bone as solid cylinders. A total of 446 samples were implanted into 74 animals. The duration of implantation ranged from 2 weeks to 2 years. A semiquantitative evaluation of local tissue reaction was performed. For each implant, 16 histological criteria were graded for severity of host tissue reaction. The liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, and lungs from each animal were also studied for evidence of systemic toxicity. The polymer implants exhibited a mild tissue reaction with the same characteristics as the control. Local tumor formation, bone osteolysis, and surrounding muscle necrosis were not seen. No pathological changes compatible with systemic toxicity by Delrin 150 were observed in the study of the organs. Delrin 150 in solid form did not exhibit local or systemic toxicity and is therefore biocompatible by this study. Powder implantation studies should be performed to simulate tissue response to wear particles.

Notes: The hydrogen and isobutane chemical ionization mass spectra of a number of carotenoids, with symmetrical and unsymmetrical end groups, have been examined. Similar spectra were obtained with each gas. Loss of fragments, characteristic of both the polyene chain and of the end groups were shown by all compounds. Contrasting with the electron ionization spectra the chemical ionization spectra showed more abundant ions in the high mass region and a simpler fragmentation pattern. However, the diagnostic features of the [M - 92]+/[M - 106]+ ratio, established for electron ionization spectra, are retained. A unique fragmentation pattern is shown by the keto derivative, capsanthin, with consecutive losses of xylene and toluene from the [M + 1]+ ion. Attention is drawn to the significantly superior sensitivity of the chemical ionization technique over that of the electron ionization procedure. Use of the chemical ionization technique for the identification and structural examination of carotenoids thus offers advantages over the electron ionization and field desorption techniques.
