    Notes: Abstract In order to evaluate the effect of anatomic asymmetries on the gas concentration distribution in the pulmonary airways, a Monte Carlo simulation of combined bulk flow and molecular diffusion was carried out in a realistic distal airway model (Parkeret al., 1971). This airway model, composed of branches distal to the 0.5-ram diameter airways, contained an upper symmetric segment consisting of four generations of conducting airways and a lower asymmetric segment of alveolar ducts and sacs arranged in five transport paths of varying lengths. In accounting for the volume increases of these ducts and sacs occurring during normal respiration, uniform alveolar filling rates and a fixed length-to-diameter ratio of all airways were assumed. For a pulse injection of inert tracer gas, the simulation was employed to determine the longitudinal concentration profiles in the conducting airways. In the alveolated airways, not only were the longitudinal profiles determined along each path, but radial transport from the core to the periphery of the airways was considered. The results of the simulations indicate that geometric asymmetries alone contribute substantially to regional concentration variations in the distal airways. For example, when a gas bolus is injected at mid*inspiration, there are concentration differences as great as 40% between two points along different transport paths located equi-distant from the proximal end of the model. As viewed from the terminal end of the model (acinus), average concentration differences as large as 6-to-1 exist between the longest and shortest transport paths respectively for gas boli introduced near the end of inspiration. The results further indicate because of large radial diffusion rates, no significant concentration differences exist between the periphery a-ld the central core of alveolated airways. Simulation of the expired concentration profiles indicate that boll injected very late during inspiration exhibit a sloping tail, unlike the earlier injected boll whose tails are virtually horizontal. Through the use of superposition teehniqnes, it was found that these sloping tails correspond to an alveolar slope of 1.5 vol% between 750 and 1250 ml expired for a continuous washing of tracer. This result is in disagreement with other transport analyses which did not directly account for the effect of geometric asymmetries.

    Notes: Abstract Improved criteria are necessary to aid in determining awards of federal funds for metropolitan transit projects. Commuting is the main use for public transit. Thus a primary objective of an urban transit system should be to provide a flexible and balanced set of options to the workers in the metropolitan area for their journey to work. This paper discusses various facets of an appropriate balance among the three modes: rapid rail, bus, and automobile. Three cities are selected for further analysis: Baltimore, Kansas City, and Phoenix. These cities represent different stages in economic-transportation development, and also present different spatial patterns of residence and employment. The applicability of rapid rail transit to each city is examined in view of central city worker concentration and recent trends.

    Notes: Abstract Three experiments with a sabellid polychaete (Eudistylia vancouveri) show the threshold concentration for increasing copper accumulation with time to lie between 3 and 6 μg/L total copper in seawater during winter conditions. The branchial crown, probably the major absorptive site, concentrated more copper than the body. Accumulation was influenced by size but not by sex. Our studies indicate that the body burden of copper will increase above natural levels in areas of industrial discharge where copper levels are above the threshold limit for accumulation.

    Notes: Summary Cell division during embryonic development of the brine shrimp,Artemia salina has been studied by counting nuclei and mitotic figures. No cell division was observed during development of the encysted gastrula until about an hour before emergence of the embryo (a pre-nauplius) from the cyst, and even then only a few mitotic figures were observed. Following emergence, and during further development up to the stage II nauplius larva an increase of about 25% in the number of cells occurs. However, when the newly hatched larva is exposed to FUdR (10 μg/ml) cell division is largely inhibited, but observable development nevertheless proceeds normally. Evidently all processes involved with the development of the gastrula into a stage II nauplius larva can occur with far fewer cells than normally are present.

    Notes: Abstract Nineteen percent of diploid plants at the ecotonal junction between laterite inhabiting diploid and coastal sandplain inhabiting tetraploid forms of Dampiera linearis carry from 1 to 6 B chromosomes. The B chromosomes usually form temporary pseudovalent associations at diplotene and often A chromosome/B chromosome connections can be seen. Some plants with high numbers of B chromosomes exhibit A bivalent nondisjunction. Although undivided B chromosomes are distributed to TI poles at random, the nondisjoined bivalents show a polarised movement to poles with high numbers of Bs. It is suggested that the pre-metaphase-1 A/B associations provide a basis for non-random assortment in genomically hybrid individuals and that nonreduction, associated with wholesale nondisjunction induced by very high numbers of B chromosomes, resulted in the generation of polyploids which were reproductively isolated from their diploid progenitors, heterotic and adapted to the coastal plain environment.

    Notes: Abstract Extensive chromosome repatterning was demonstrated in Stylidium crossocephalum F. Muell by means of karyotype analysis of a sample of 191 native plants taken from 69 collection sites throughout the species range between Yanchep and Geraldton on the coastal sand plain north of Perth in Western Australia. Both polymorphic and polytypic variation occurred. Of the 42 haploid genomic combinations of chromosomes defined in this study, no less than 26 were found as heterozygotes only and were of localized occurrence. 16 stable genomes, occurring as homozygotes, generally had more extensive but polytypic distributions. Although pollen fertility in native plants was always found to be greater than 40%, and usually greater than 90%, synthetic crosses proved to be totally or almost completely pollen sterile. This is explained on the hypothesis that chromosome repatterning in this species is associated with the generation and modulation of recessive zygotic lethal systems which exist in locally coadapted combinations. These eliminate the products of self fertilization while permitting the relatively free development of cross pollination products in natural populations.

    Notes: Summary A number of cytokinin reference compounds have been successfully separated by High Pressure Liquid Chromatography using columns of pellicular strong cation exchange resin and of pellicular polyamide. On polyamide, all cytokinins were eluted within 10 min with an aqueous buffer but on the cation exchange resin some cytokinins (generally those with bulky N6-substituents and in addition lacking an N9-ribosyl substituent) had excessively long retention times with aqueous buffer eluent. However, addition of methanol to the buffer enabled these cytokinins to be separated and eluted within a reasonable time. As small an amount as 5 nanogram of cytokinin could readily be detected by the procedures described.
