Notes: Abstract Precision measurements of high energy transitions of the reactions197Au(n, γ)198Au and198Au(n, γ)199Au were performed with the pair spectrometer at the High Flux Reactor at Grenoble. The energy calibration was done with well known transition energies in the nuclei13C,28Al and36Cl. Energies and intensities of the measured transitions are given. TheQ n -value of198Au and199Au were deduced to be 6,512.32±0.22 keV and 7,584.01 ±0.21 keV respectively.

Notes: Abstract The decay of149Pr (T 1/2=2.2 min) has been studied using the two fission product separators JOSEF and LOHENGRIN to produce the149Pr nucleus. A level scheme for149Nd has been established. Theβ-branching and logft values for the excited levels were deduced from the analysis ofγ-intensity balances. Furthermore, the spins and parities for most of the excited states observed were obtained from the comparison between the present work, the neutron capture results and the pick-up reactions. The positive parity levels have been described with the Nilsson model with Coriolis andΔN=2 interactions included. The properties of the negative parity states cannot be explained as easily; however, it has been attempted to extract the structure of the ground state $$(I^\pi = \tfrac{5}{2}^ - )$$ and the first excited states $$(I^\pi = \tfrac{7}{2}^ - and\tfrac{3}{2}^ - )$$ .

Notes: Summary 1. No. 2 fuel oil was of relatively low toxicity to the intertidal isopod Lygiaexotica as indicated by the TLm values of over 100% for the WSF and 73 ppm at 24 and 48 hours and 36.5 ppm at 96 hours for the OWD. 2. Respiration was not significantly affected by short term exposure to several concentrations of No.2 fuel oil prepared as either a WSF or OWD. 3. Lygia contaminated by a spill of No. 2 fuel oil and Bunker C residual oil contained high concentrations of dibenzothiophenes. It is not known whether the dibenzothiophenes were accumulated by theLygia tissues or adsorbed to the exoskeleton. Therefore, the high mortality ofLygia following the spill cannot yet be attributed to the dibenzothiophenes.

Notes: Conclusions The acute toxicity of DDT and chlordane formulations was considerably reduced by nickel boridecatalyzed dechlorination. However, the reduction in toxicity was not sufficient to warrant the use of this method for the ultimate disposal of these pesticides. The dechlorination of lindane by this method appears to have potential as a chemical disposal procedure.

Notes: Abstract This investigation describes five Mesozoic dolerite dikes which intrude Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Inner Piedmont of western South Carolina. The dikes are vertical or nearly so and strike approximately N40° W. Three major northeast-trending faults also occur in the study area. Left lateral displacement of one dolerite is documented at a locality near Cleveland, South Carolina. Elsewhere, several of the dolerite dikes appear to terminate at or near the faults. — The dolerite dikes have subophitic to microporphyritic textures and consist principally of plagioclase (generally An70–80), olivine (dominantly Fo80–90) and augite with subordinate pigeonite, titanomagnetite, chromite and brown, partly glassy mesostasis. In one dike pyroxene compositions trend from augite to ferroaugite in contrast to an augite→subcalcic augite→pigeonite trend characteristic of the other dolerites. The contrasting trends primarily result from differences in SiO2 abundance in the dolerite magmas. — Major and trace element analyses indicate the presence of two different olivine-normative dolerite magma types. The two magma types are not related by near surface crystal fractionation. Models for genesis of the olivine-normative dolerite magmas by partial melting of a plagioclase peridotite upper mantle source region are presented. The models require that the source region be enriched in LREE and incompatible elements such as Rb, Ba, Hf and Th relative to Cl chondritic abundances. One magma type appears to represent a primary dolerite magma that ascended from the source region with little subsequent compositional change. The second magma type most likely experienced assimilation of clinopyroxene-garnet (eclogite) during ascent, thereby acquiring a REE pattern with a less steep negative slope for the LREE and a slight positive slope in the HREE.

Notes: Summary The synthesis of thirty five ribosomal proteins has been studied in Saccharomyces cerevisiae using a temperature sensitive mutant blocked in the initiation of polypeptides. The synthesis of all the ribosomal proteins was nearly equally affected by the block. This absence of polarity, together with previous genetic and biochemical data, indicates that eukaryotic ribosomal proteins are coded by monocistronic mRNAs.

Notes: Abstract Holocene fossil shells of the rotifer, Habrotrocha angusticollus (Bdelloidea: Rotifera) is reported from two peatlands in northern Ontario, Canada. H. angusticollis is a common component of the microfauna in Sphagnum peatlands and other wet mossy habitats. Our knowledge of the distribution and ecology of H. angusticollis is limited and this paper is the first detailed report of the shells as fossils in North America. Fossil shells of H. angusticollis may prove to be a valuable paleoecological indicator in peat deposits once Quaternary paleoecologists learn to recognize them and neoecologists extend their surveys to peatlands.

Notes: Abstract A number of recent studies have analyzed whether there is a political influence on monetary policy, focusing primarily on whether monetary policy becomes “easier” just prior to elections. In addition to exploring whether there exists an election period cycle in monetary policy, this article explores the existence of another political influence on policy. Following up on some recent anecdotal evidence provided by John T. Woolley, this article explores whether incumbent FED chairmen have succeeded in influencing monetary policy in order to improve their reappointment chances. The analysis, which spans the administrations of seven U.S. presidents and four FED chairmen, finds no conclusive evidence that FED policy changes systematically either before elections or chairman reappointment dates. The analysis has implications for the issue of rules versus discretion in monetary policy.
