Notes: Abstract Rydberg states of the odd-parity series 6p 2(3 p 0)n p of BiI are excited by a three-photon process. A two-photon dissociation of Bi2 into excited atomic states followed by a one-photon absorption leads to highly excited atomic Rydberg states up ton = 32. States of the even-parity Rydberg series 6p 2(3 p 0)nsJ=1/2,ndJ=3/2 andndJ=5/2 are also observed. In order to avoid the background caused by ionization of the bismuth molecules we performed a two-color excitation with pulsed dye lasers. With this experiment the 6p 2(3 p 0)npJ=3/2 Rydberg series could be resolved up ton=75. The increasing quantum defect of this series is due to a perturbing state close to the first ionization limit. By a MQDT analysis we obtain the energy of the perturbing state and a value of 58,761.68±0.1 cm−1 for the first ionization limit of atomic bismuth.

Notes: Summary Female mice which displayed a vaginal plug after mating were given a diet containing 0, 0.125, 0.250, 0.500% of lead as lead acetate and were dissected 16 to 18 days later. Lead treatment was found to reduce significantly the incidence of pregnancies and to increase the postimplantation loss in the pregnant females.

Notes: Summary Lead was given in the diet (1%) to rats from birth and at different times the animals were studied for delta amino levulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity, spleen weight,59Fe incorporation in erythrocytes and51Cr-labeled erythrocytes survival. The increased ALAD and spleen weight found after lead treatment is explained as a consequence of a shortened survival, which results in a younger age of circulating erythrocytes with higher ALAD activity.

Notes: Summary Dietary lead (0.5%) was given to mice which, after mating, exhibited a vaginal plug. Estradiol, progesterone and prostaglandins E and F 2α were determined in, the plasma by radioimmuno assay at different times thereafter. The increase in estradiol and decrease in prostaglandins prior implantation are not greatly altered by lead treatment, whereas the subsequent increase in progesterone and later in estradiol is abolished. It is concluded that the lower number of pregnancies seen in lead-treated mothers is due to a maternal hormonal imbalance caused by lead.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The equivalent circuits of standard slot conductors of electrical machines are given, their elements are described, and the mathematical functions, especially the combination of the Bessel and Hankel functions that occur in the elements, are represented graphically in the gauss-plane or in the conjugate gauss-plane, respectively. The curves confirm that in layered conductors the effect of the uppermost layer on the total impedance increases according to the size of its reduced conductor height.

Notes: Summary Developmental rate and adult weight were studied at constant temperatures from 9.8 to 27.9°C for 18 clones from each of five populations of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), from locations between 39 and 53°N latitude in central North America. The response of developmental rate to temperature for each clone was accurately described by a three parameter non-linear equation. Adult weight usually decreased with increasing rearing temperature, but the shape of the response to temperature varied among clones. Variation in the developmental parameters was greater among clones within populations than among populations. No consistent trends were observed in the developmental parameters or adult weights either with latitude or the long term average temperatures at the locations. We conclude that previously reported geographic variation in the developmental threshold of this species, which was attributed to local adaptation, occurred either because the clones tested were not representative of the populations or because rearing methods differed among studies. The results are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that life history traits which are temperature sensitive are adapted to local thermal environments.

Notes: Summary Absorption of different amino acids [lysine,α-amino isobutyrate (AIB), methionine, alanine, glycine] was studied in an intestinal in vivo preparation from normal and X-irradiated rats (1 and 3 days after 2000 R). Absorption of amino acids under loading and in presence of other amino acids was also followed. Lysine and AIB absorption follow a saturation kinetics with a maximal velocity of 35 and 85.6 µmoles/min and aK t of 10 and 67 µmoles for lysine and AIB respectively. Interference in absorption exists not only between amino acids of the same class, but also by lysine on neutral amino acids. One day after irradiation, absorption is normal or even enhanced, although active transport appears impaired as indicated by the increase inK t. Three days after exposure, absorption, particularly the active one, is severely depressed. This is indicated by the low Vm and highK t, as well as by the fact that loading has little influence on absorption.

Notes: Summary Renal function and distribution of51Cr-EDTA in intra/extravascular space has been studied in rats suffering from the gastro-intestinal syndrome after supralethal doses of X-irradiation. Urine excretion and glomerular filtration were found to decrease until 50 hrp.i. Urine excretion and, in a less degree, glomerular filtration rate increase then to a peak at 67 hrs before falling off to zero values before death. The extravascular space was found to be expanded in several organs from 60 hrs on (kidney, liver, stomach, intestine). Only in kidney where weight follows changes in extravascular space, a return to normal values is seen before death. An expansion in extravascular space due to a reduced re-extraction into intravascular space and diminished excretion constant can also be discerned beginning early after exposure on the basis of compartmental analysis of the blood activity-time curves. It is postulated that the changes observed reflect a state of shock developing slowly after irradiation and entering its irreversible stage 60 to 65 hrs after exposure.

Notes: Summary Relative blood flow in different organs of the supralethally (3 kR) whole body X-irradiated rat was studied using labeled 15 µ microspheres. Immediately after irradiation blood flow in brain diminishes. From 10 to 20 hrs a phase of increase in blood flowing to many parenchymal organs ensues. A second maximum 45 to 50 hrs and a third one at 60 hrs. In most organs except in brain and liver relative blood flow diminishes before death. The genesis of these changes as signs of a slowly developing shock is discussed.
