Notes: ABA type block copolymers composed of poly(γ-benzyl L-glutamate) (PBLG) as the A component and poly(propylene glycol) as the B component were obtained by polymerization of γ-benzyl L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride, initiated by amine groups at both ends of poly(propylene glycol). From circular dichroism measurements in ethylene dichloride solution as well as from infrared spectra measurements in the solid state, it was found that the polypeptide block exists in the α-helical conformation, as in PBLG homopolymer. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction patterns for the block copolymers depend on the casting solvent and show basically similar reflections as the PBLG homopolymer.

Notes: Attachment of the side-chain carboxyl of the protected aspartic or glutamic acid ester to the resin support has been established for the solid-phase synthesis of the asparagine or glutamine peptide. After further elongation of the α-amino deprotected resin-bound peptide ester with protected peptide fragments and the final detachment from the resin support by ammonolysis, the larger peptides containing, or preferably C-terminated with, asparagine or glutamine could be obtained. Thus, the C-peptide of human proinsulin was prepared by coupling to the resin-bound dipeptide derivative, Leu-Glu(OCH2Ph®)·OtBu, with six fragments consecutively. It was obtained in an overall yield of 36% after detaching from the resin with alcoholic ammonia, followed by mild acidolysis, DEAE cellulose chromatography, and gel filtration. This procedure has now been applied to the synthesis of the C-terminal fragment of the insulin A chain ending in asparagine, and also to the synthesis of the threonine or serine peptide, where the anchorage to the resin was designed by the reaction of the sidechain hydroxyl with succinic anhydride in the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine to form the hemiester of succinic acid, which in turn was condensed to the aminomethyl resin by the DCC-HOBt procedure. Model experiments on the synthesis of the Z-Thr(CO-CH2CH2CONHCH2Ph®)·OtBu and Bpoc-Lys(Boc)-Thr(COCH2CH2CONHCH2Ph®)·OtBu, as well as their detachment from the resin by amminolysis or hydrazinolysis, have shown the potential for a milder process in the solid-phase synthesis of larger peptides.

Notes: High melting polymers of three different types of crystallization behavior were analyzed as to their thermal properties. The heat capacity at constant pressure of liquid poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) from 490 to 540 K was measured by scanning calorimetry. Combining with prior measured liquid heat capacity data of poly(oxy-1,4-phenylene) (PO) (358 - 620 K), poly-(thio-1,4-phenylene) (PPS) (540 - 600 K), poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate) (PEN) (400 - 450 K, 530 - 600 K), an addition scheme for liquid heat capacities was constructed. In addition, the thermodynamic functions H and S have been calculated for those five polymers. The absolute, molar, residual entropy for the glassy state at zero kelvin is estimated to be 6,6,15,2, 7,48, 5,70, and 19,9 J/(K · mol) for PPS, PEN, PPO, PO, and PBT, respectively. Another two polymers with similar structure, poly(1,4-oxybenzoic acid) (POB) and poly(2,6-oxynaphthoic acid) (PON), were also studied in their high temperature mesophase states. A test of the addition scheme has been made to predict their heat capacities.

Notes: The deformation of thin films of poly(1-butene) (PB) occurs by micronecking. In both fresh (From II crystal structure) and aged (Form I) films finite blocks are drawn off the edge of the microneck, the detailed mechanisms depending on the orientation of the original crystalline ribbons comprising the spherulites with respect to the draw direction. Deformation of fresh thick and thin PB films is accompanied by a transformation to a Form I which melts ca. 5°C lower than that obtained by aging alone (124 vs. 129°C); in thick films the molecular axes in the Form I crystals are oriented in a cone at about 30° to the draw direction until deformation is nearly complete, after which they align in the draw direction. Tensile properties depend on the crystal form, fresh samples having a considerably lower modulus and higher elongation to failure.

    Notes: 4-(α,α-dimethylbenzyl)phenyl methacrylate (1) was prepared by reaction of 4-(α,α-dimethylbenzyl)phenol and methacryloyl chloride in ether. By careful crystallization from ether large monoclinic crystals could be obtained with the following crystal data: a = 6,622 (2) Å, b = 12,578 (2) Å, c = 9,892 (3) Å, β = 99,86° (3), Dc = 1,147 g · cm-3, V = 811,1 Å3, M = 280,4, λ = 0,7107 Å, μ = (Mo Kα) = 0,7 cm-1, F(000) = 300, space group P21, Z = 2. Attempts to polymerize the monomer (m.p. 46-48°C) by γ-irradiation at ambient temperature gave only a small amount of a crosslinked product.

Notes: Neutral polythiophene films obtained by NH4OH compensation of electrochemically polymerized samples were re-oxidized chemically to the metallic state by a wide range of oxidants. The electrochemically and chemically oxidized polythiophene films were found to be quite stable in air. Results of IR, SEM and WAXS studies are described and discussed. The feasibility of chemical re-oxidation of neutral electrochemically prepared polythiophene films offers a convenient means to produce flexible highly conductive polythiophene films.

Notes: Powdered Nylon 66 was prepared as a model of amorphous polymers. The resultant powder polyamide was composed of only amorphous regions. The extent of uptake of the acid azo dyes, a homologous series of methyl orange derivatives, by the polymer was measured in an aqueous solution. The first binding constants and the thermodynamic parameters in the course of the binding were evaluated. The thermodynamic behaviors obtained are very similar to those of crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone. The favorable free energy of the binding is accompanied by an entropy gain and an exothermic enthalpy change. The shorter the alkyl chain of the dyes, the more negative is the enthalpy change and, hence, the smaller is the entropy change. The thermodynamic data for butyl orange showed that the binding process is athermal and is wholly an entropic effect. The binding of the dyes to the matrix is entropically favorable as a result of the operation of the hydrophobic effect. In addition, an electrostatic force is operative between the sulfonate group on the dyes and the terminal amino groups on the polyamide.

Notes: Some properties of photocrosslinked high density polyethylene (2 mm thick sheets) have been studied. The homogeneity of the network is greatly improved by the application of triallylcyanurate (TAC) as crosslinking agent. The role of TAC in promoting the crosslinking is discussed. The crosslinked PE is found to be durable towards immersion in boiling water. Oxygen permeability increases while density and melting point decrease with increasing degree of crosslinking. The network chain density is obtained using conventional swelling method in boiling xylene, which together with data from melting point depression show that contribution of chain entanglement is insignificant to the gel formation of PE in this work.
