Notes: In low-density polyethylene containing the additive propylfluorancene, radiation energy received by polyethylene is transferred to propylfluorancence, and the production of radicals at 77 K in polyethylene is suppressed. Propylfluoranncene also increases the rate of the decay of radicals of polyethylene at room temperature. The depression of radical production and accelaration of radical decay at room temperature results in the depression of gas production and crosslinks at room temperature in low-density polyethylene containing propylfluorancene. Similar results were obtained in ethylen-propylene copolymer containing the same additive.

Notes: The effect of immobilization with various glass-forming monomers on the stability of PS II activity of spinach chloroplast was investigated. PS II activity (O2 evolution due to the Hill reaction) was reduced very slightly by the addition of monomers including polyethyleneglycol (PEG). Immobilization of chloroplast was done with hydrophobic monomer as well as hydrophilic monomer and activity of immobilized chloroplast increased with decreasing monomer concentration as far as the polymerization was possible. The activity of immobilized chloroplast was very high and it decayed far more gradually with the storage time in comparison with the decay of unimmobilized chloroplast and was retained more than 30 days. The optimum monomer concentration for immobilization was about 10%. Thermostability of chloroplast also increased greatly by immobilization with these monomers, especially hydrophilic monomers.

Notes: In order to carry out an effective enzyme reaction, the preparation of soluble-insoluble immobilized enzyme was investigated. Proteases were selected as model enzymes, and their immobilization was carried out by using an enteric coating polymer as a carrier. Among the polymers tested, methacrylic acid-methylacrylate-methylmethacrylate copolymer (MPM-06) gave the most active soluble-insoluble immobilized papain. This immobilized papain showed insoluble from below pH 4.8 and soluble form above pH 5.8; it was also soluble in water-miscible organic solvent. It was reusable and more stable with heat and water-miscible organic solvents than native proteases. Furthermore, various proteases could be immobilized by using MPM-06 with high activity. Chymotrypsin immobilized by this method catalyzed the effective peptide synthesis in a heterogeneous reaction system containing water-miscible organic solvent.

Notes: Higher activity of ethanol production due to higher density of yeast cells was observed in yeast cells immobilized with artificial polymer carriers of higher water content based on methoxypolyethyleneglycol methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethylacrylate. These polymer carriers were prepared by radiation-induced polymerization below 0°C. Yeast cells were immobilized with these carriers by adsorption method during multiplication. Two possible reasons for higher activity were discussed.

Notes: The processability of polyethylene in sheet-extrusion or calendering may be improved by the addition of plastic flakes. The effects of plastic flake parameters and flow conditions on the viscosity and the die swell of the suspension were determined, and the structure in flow (morphology or dispersion state) and applications were discussed. Flakes of biaxially oriented polystyrene, high-impact polystyrene, polypropylene, polyamide or polypropylene spheres were dry-blended with polyethylene. The viscosity was determined by means of a slit or a capillary rheometer. The quenched extrudate was annealed and its die swell was measured. Flakes of biaxially oriented polystyrene shrunk into rod-like form during heating, but other plastics retained the flake-form. The relative viscosity and the swell ratio of the suspensions depended on the type of plastic and operating conditions. The rheological behavior of suspensions qualitatively suggested that polypropylene flakes deformed or crowded (including stacking), polyamide flakes deformed slightly, and polystyrene flakes were difficult to buckle, but crowded slightly. The thickness of extrudates can be controlled easily by flake addition due to decreased die swell, while the output would be reduced to some extent.

Notes: Co-extrusion by means of only one single screw with a double channel was studied. The effects of the operating conditions, the material properties and the screw geometries on the inter-channel flow and the output rate were determined. The flow mechanism and the application to the composites with stratified structures were discussed. The inter-channel flow rate decreased with decrease in the back pressure, the stock temperature, the screw rotational speed and the viscosity difference between polymer melts in both channels. The decrease in the compression ratios of channels, the barrier flight in the compression zone and the sealing at the flight clearance with the polyamide-packing reduced the inter-channel flow significantly without a decrease in the output rate. With this method, co-extrudates with distinctly stratified cross-sections were prepared. The single screw with double-channel could be applied effectively to the co-extrusion of composites with stratified structures such as sheath-and-core structures, and it is particularly suitable to distribute the additives heterogeneously or to enclose the waste polymer.

Notes: The effect of large dosage irradiation in vacuo on polyethylene was investigated by the method of double irradiation. Polyethylene was first irradiated with γ-rays to a dosage of several hundred Mrad in vacuo at 298°K. The formed radicals were destoryed, and the polymer, changed chemically and morphologically, was irradiated again in vacuo at 77°K with a dose of 12.7 Mrad. The thermal decay of radicals produced in polyethylene by the second irradiation was investigated. The results show that many double bonds are formed in the sample irradiated to several hundred Mrad on the first irradiation. Alkyl radicals produced by the second irradiation react with these double bonds yielded by the first irradiation to form a large number of allyl radicals. These allyl radicals are much more stable than alkyl radicals radicals in vacuo at 298°K. In a sample not exposed to the first irradiation, almost all radicals formed by the second irradiation decay to form stable products. Crosslinks formed by a large amount of irradiation make the polyethylene matrix more rigid. This rigidity slows down the radical decay. These results suggest that the rate of radical accumulation in polyethylene irradiated in vacuo increases as the dosage increases.

Notes: A specific functional group that could interact with ions was introduced in a synthetic membrane to achieve an active transport of ions. One way to synthesize the active transport membrane was to introduce a functional group which has a tautomerism upon pH changes in an aqueous solution. A polymer having pendent N-hydroxyethyl amide groups was synthesized to form a membrane, and the membrane was fixed in a cell as a partition film, in which one side of the solution was adjusted to be acidic and the other side basic. It was then possible to transport chlorine ion through the membrane owing to the carrier functions caused by tautomerism of the N-hydroxyethyl amide group from the acidic to the basic sides. The transport of the chlorine ion was not dependent on diffusion control.

Notes: Membranes derived from copolymers having N-hydroxyalkyl groups were prepared, and the active transport for anions through the membranes was investigated in the presence of a crown ether which suppresses the diffusion of counter ions. The maximum of the concentrated anions in one side cell was maintained for a long time by the addition of a crown ether in the cell, and a concentration of anions up to 50% was attained. Various N-hydroxyalkyl groups of different lengths were incorporated in copolymers with styrene, and the transport for anions was investigated in order to establish the carrier mechanism of the tautomeric functional groups. Longer-length alkyl moieties bearing N-hydroxyalkyl groups led to a decrease in the active transport for anions, which supports a carrier mechanism for the membranes.
