Notes: Poly(4-vinylphenylacetate-co-maleic anhydride) was synthesized by free-radical initiation to yield a 1:1 copolymer over a 0.2-0.8 mole fraction range of monomer feed in maleic anhydride. Evidence of 1:1 charge transfer complex between 4-vinylphenylacetate and maleic anhydride was obtained in the UV region at 355 nm. The 13C NMR chemical shifts and 1H NMR integration data indicate that poly(4-vinylphenylacetate-co-maleic anhydride) has an alternating and stereoregular structure. The molecular weight of poly(4-vinylphenylacetate-co-maleic anhydride) was controlled by using specific solvents and initiator concentrations.

Notes: Batch and continuous fermentations with Clostridium thermoaceticum (ATCC 39073) using automatic pH control were conducted. The value of μmax obtained from batch fermentation was about 0.14 h-1; acetate yield, which was both growth and non-growth associated, was about 2 mole of acetic acid/mole of glucose, compared with a theoretical maximum value of 3. This low yield, compared with literature data, may be explained by glucose loss through a combination of degradation routes. Continuous fermentation could be sustained for 1600 h or more without contamination problems. Continuous fermentation at high dilution rates indicates that μmax may be well above 0.17 h-1 when fresh feed medium is used. Acetate yields in continuous fermentation were about 77% of theoretical or 2.3 mole of acetic acid/mole of glucose.

Notes: The problem of non-linear superconducting magnet and electrical protection circuit system transients is formulated. To enable studying the effects of coil normalization transients, coil distortion (due to imbalanced magnetic forces), internal coil arcs and shorts, and other normal and off-normal circuit element responses, the following capabilities are included: temporal, voltage and current-dependent voltage sources, current sources, resistors, capacitors and inductors. The concept of self-mutual inductance, and the form of the associated inductance matrix, is discussed for internally shorted coils. This is a Kirchhoff's voltage loop law and Kirchhoff's current node law formulation. The non-linear integrodifferential equation set is solved via a unique hybrid finite difference/integral finite element technique.

Notes: Mass and NMR spectral data are presented for a number of dodecafluoro-1,6-disubstituted triptycenes. The epoxide OAs2(C6F4)2 can be made by heating together arsenic (As), arsenic(III) oxide (As2O3) and 1,2-di-iodotetrafluorobenzene (1,2-I2C6F4) in a sealed tube. The molecular structure of As2(C6F4)3 has been confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

Notes: This paper considers the use of various finite differencing schemes for the computation of flows involving regions of recirculation. Standard first-order hybrid schemes, vector (or skew) schemes and second-order schemes are used to predict laminar flows in a channel containing a constriction and over a normal flat plate with a downstream splitter plate. In the former case the results are compared with those of other workers and with the implications of analytic theories for the viscous dominated flow around the sharp corner.Attention is concentrated on the effects of errors arising from the use of non-uniform grids and it is shown that higher-order differencing schemes are generally much less susceptible to these than the simpler schemes. The major conclusion is that for flows containing regions where pressure gradients largely balance the convective terms in the momentum equations, in addition to other regions where convection and diffusion balance, higher order differencing schemes are likely to be essential if accurate predictions are required on grids without excessive numbers of nodes. It is argued that similar conclusions must hold for high Reynolds number turbulent flows.

Notes: Malachite green hydroxide and tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine from complete films on solutions in hydroxypropionitrile and the He(I) photoelectron spectra of these liquid films are presented. The film of malachite green is shown to be in the covalent form although the ionic form predominates in solution.

Notes: The following indole compounds have been unequivocally identified and semi-quantitated in culture supernatants of Rhizobium strains by gas chromatography mass spectrometry: indole-3-aldehyde, trytophol, indole-3-carboxylic acid, indole-3-glycollc acid, indole-3-actic acid, indole-3-glyoxylic acid, N-acethyl-L-tryptophan and indole-3-pyruvic acid, as well as indole-3-acetic acid. The strains included a number of chosen Rhizobium mutants defective in various stages of nodule formation, and the biological implications of the findings are discussed. Two alternative approaches to sample purification were taken, one based primarily on solvent partitioning and the other on high-performance liquid chromatography. The advantages of each method are discussed. Gas chromatographic retention times and mass spectra are given for the TMS derivatives of 17 authentic indole standards.
