Notes: Abstract Measurements of the binding of ligand to receptors that are macromolecules, either free or components of biomembranes, often show deviation from what is expected of a simple reaction described by an association and a dissociation rate constant. A more versatile model and more discriminating experiments are required for a satisfactory explanation. This paper is based on a general model of the binding reaction in which the rate constants and equilibrium constant are dependent upon occupancy of receptors. The analysis of the model leads to three kinds of experiments: (1) equilibrium measurements which permit quantitative determination of a dissociation equilibrium parameter as a function of receptor occupancy; (2) measurements prior to equilibrium which yield the same information; and (3) measurements prior to equilibrium which reveal quantitatively the dependence of both association and dissociation rate parameters separately, on occupancy.

Notes: Abstract The hydrogen bond patterns ofo-alkoxybenzoic acids have been shown previously to involve intramolecular hydrogen bonds. In this paper we show thato-methoxybenzoic acid (I) and o-ethoxybenzoic acid (II) both exist as monomers with intramolecular hydrogen bonds in solution but that, in the solid-state,I crystallizes as hydrogen-bonded dimers whileII crystallizes with an intramolecular hydrogen bond. The correlation between solution and solid-state hydrogen bond patterns is made using solution and solid-state IR and NMR methods and by correlating the solid-state patterns with known X-ray crystal structures. The crystal structure ofI is reported here. Crystal data: monoclinicP21/n;a=7.002(2),b=14.945(9),c=7.719(4) Å,β=115.44(3)°,Z=4,V=729.4 Å3, andR=0.046 (1660 reflections).

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the rationale for the use of additive models involving multiple objectives as approximations to normative analyses. Experience has shown us that organizations often evaluate important decisions with multiple objective models rather than reducing all aspects of the problem to a single criterion, dollars, as many normative economic models prescribe. We justify this practice on two grounds: managers often prefer to think about a problem in terms of several dimensions and a multiple objective model may provide an excellent approximation to the more complex normative model. We argue that a useful analysis based on a multiple objective model will fulfill both conditions—it will provide insights for the decision maker as well as a good approximation to the normative model. We report several real-world examples of managers using multiple objective models to approximate such normative models as the risk-adjusted net present value and the value of information models. The agreement between the approximate models and the normative models is shown to be quite good. Next, we cite a portion of the behavioral decision theory literature which establishes that linear models of multiple attributes provide quite robust approximations to individual decision-making processes. We then present more general theoretical and empirical results which support our contention that linear multiple attribute models can provide good approximations to more complex models.

Notes: Abstract The dischargability of Li-B alloy is comparable with that of pure lithium in PC-LiClO4 at 23° C. The alloy may find a useful application where safety considerations permit sacrificing some coulombic capacity versus unsupported lithium. Electrochemical measurements of the amount of lithium anodically oxidized at the lithium potential suggest that the alloy is a mixture of elemental lithium plus a Li-B compound whose stoichiometry is in the vicinity of ‘Li7B6’.

Notes: Abstract The size of cottonwood (Populus deltoides L. Bartr.) leaf discs used in insect feeding preference trials with the chrysomelid beetle, Plagiodera versicoloraLaich., was shown to affect behavior, and the outcome of the feeding trial. It is suggested that disc size has an effect because it alters the ratio of chemical signals from the cut leaf edge to those of the intact leaf center. The implications of this finding to the design of bioassays; to previously noted differences in feeding behavior for insects on discs versus leaves; and to the study of feeding preference and induction of plant defense are discussed.
