Notizen: Abstract A field study was conducted on freshly reclaimed surface-mined area to determine response of sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata [Dumont] G. Don.) to delayed rhizobial inoculation. Soybeans (Glycine max L.) were used as a control legume. Plots were inoculated with spray applications of rhizobial suspensions at seeding, cotyledon stage or second trifoliate leaf stage, or not inoculated. Starter N at 0, 10 or 20 kg ha−1 was applied preplant in a factorial arrangement with inoculation timings.G. max. was grown for 92 days andL. cuneata for 121 days. Starter N increased plant growth and total shoot N in both species. However, % shoot N was found to increase only inL. cuneata. Delaying inoculation had no significant effect upon total shoot N or % shoot N accumulation inL. cuneata. Inoculation ofG. max at planting produced greater plant growth and N accumulation than delayed inoculation treatments. Application of inoculum as a surface spray appeared to be an effective method for delayed inoculation as evidenced by nodule formation. Lack of increased plant growth, regardless of time of inoculation, suggests that delayed inoculation does not improve establishment and growth ofL. cuneata in minesoil.

Notizen: The effects of rate and pattern of fertilizer S application on herbage production from Perennial ryegrass-dominant swards at six potentially S-deficient sites in south-west Scotland were measured under a silage cutting regime (3 cuts year-1) with high fertilizer N application (300 kg ha−1 year-1). Fertilizer S (as gypsum) was applied at annual rates from 0 to 48 kg ha−1 as single spring applications before the first cut or split before each of the three cuts. The residual effect of S in the year following its application was assessed at one site.Applied S increased total DM production at four of the six sites. These increases were restricted to the second and/or third cuts and were generally in the range 10-30% greater than where no S was applied. Timing of S application was not important in influencing annual DM yield. The residual effect of gypsum in the year following application was small. The supply of available soil S is limiting herbage production in certain areas and soil types of south-west Scotland. Areas of S deficiency are likely to increase in the future and need to be identified more precisely than they are at present.

Notizen: Clostridium botulinum may pose a hazard in extended shelf-life refrigerated foods. Nonproteolytic strains ofC. botulinum, which can grow at refrigeration temperatures, may be given sufficient time to grow if the shelf-life is extensive. Proteolytic strains may grow in these products if temperature abuse occurs. Mild heat treatments and vacuum or modified atmosphere packaging may select for C. botulinum and allow toxicity to occur in organoleptically acceptable products. Multiple barriers and multifactorial experiments to generate predictive models are advocated to ensure safety of extended shelf-life refrigerated foods.

Notizen: Fifty strains of Sarocladium (11 dried specimens and 39 living cultures) were examined for variation in conidial size, utilization of several carbon sources, hydrolysis of several substrates, esterase isozymes after gel electrophoresis, and secondary metabolites after thin-layer chromatography. The results showed that there was insufficient justification to maintain the separation of the genus into the two species S. oryzae and S. attenuatum; S. attenuatum is, therefore, considered a synonym of S. oryzae. Strains isolated from outbreaks of bamboo blight in Bangladesh could be distinguished from strains isolated from rice in 12 countries by pigment production in culture; a strain isolated from bamboo leaf-litter in India was identical to the rice isolates in this respect.

Notizen: The effect of autoclaving on meat enhancement of dietary iron bioavailability was studied. Meat was mixed with FeSO4 or hemoglobin to obtain ratios of iron from meat to iron from FeSO4 or hemoglobin of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. One-half of each mixture (except meat:FeSO4 mixture 0:100) was autoclaved for 90 min at 15 psi. The meat mixtures were lyophilized and formulated into diets to provide approximately 35 mg Fe/kg. Hemoglobin regeneration efficiency (HRE) was determined as the percent iron gained as hemoglobin relative to the iron consumed. Heat increased the HREs of meat/hemoglobin mixtures and of hemoglobin. Heat did not affect the HRE of meat or meat/ferrous sulfate mixtures. Meat did not significantly enhance the bioavailability of total dietary iron.

Notizen: Obtaining reliable results from comparative crustacean nutrition studies requires a dietary reference protein which is available world-wide and is nutritionally optimal for growth and survival. Traditional protein sources include “vitamin free” casein, egg albumin, whole egg protein, soybean protein, and others. These have proven to be inadequate for juvenile lobster (Homrus americanus). Purified rock crab (Cancer irroratus) protein is proposed to be nutritionally superior to casein for inclusion in semi-purified lobster diets.Eighteen week feeding trials with juvenile H. americanus were conducted to compare diets containing protein obtained from rock crabs (Cancer irroratus), and produced by several different purification processes with a control diet having casein as its primary protein source. Diets containing purified rock crab protein were found to be superior to the control diet. Among the differently derived purified rock crab protein products, the precooked, isopropanol-purified was the most effective dietary ingredient.

Notizen: The temporal cholesterolemic patterns to skim milk powder (SMP) and reprocessed SMP (RSMP) diets were compared to diets containing casein or laboratory rat chow over a 24-day period. SMP was hypocholestetemic relative to casein in rats fed a 1% dietary cholesterol. Reprocessing of SMP resulted in an apparent loss of the relative hypocholesterolemic reponse of native SMP. Amino acid analysis of SMP and RSMP, showed only marginally lower lysine levels than casein; however, the Iysine/arginine ratio was higher in SMP than either in casein or RSMP. Available lysine content in SMP was higher than in RSMP, suggesting occurrence of nonenyzmatic browning reactions. Although a similar cholesterolemic response was observed in casein and RSMP, the available lysine content of these two protein sources were markedly different, suggesting that reduced available lysine alone was not totally responsible for the lower cholesterolemic response of SMP, relative to casein.

Notizen: Proximate and micronutrient composition of cantaloupe and honeydew melons purchased from six marketing locations at marketing times near maximum and minimum product availability were determined. Cantaloupe varieties purchased at periods near maximum availability showed significantly higher (α= 0.01) levels of niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, ascorbic acid, folacin and Cr compared to those purchased near minimum availability. Honeydew melon varieties purchased at periods near maximum availability showed significantly lower (α= 0.01) levels of ascorbic acid, folacin, pantothenic acid, K, Zn, and Cr compared to those purchased near minimum availability. Although some differences were observed between values obtained and those reported in Handbook 8–9, proximate composition and mean values for micronutrients approximated those previously reported.

Notizen: Survival of four intergravel development phases of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Rich., in a dewatered environment varied with stage of development, duration of exposure, and relative humidity. Egg phases were considerably more tolerant than alevin phases. Cleavage eggs tolerated dewatering for 12 consecutive days (97% survival), the maximum period tested. Embryos tolerated dewatering until they began hatching on the eight day, when mortalities sharply increased. In contrast, eleutheroembryos had only 43% survival when dewatered 6h and pre-emergent alevins had only 36% survival when dewatered 2h. A few dewatered embryos died when relative humidity was 100%, but mortality increased significantly at 90 and 80% relative humidity. Survival of alevin phases, but not egg phases, in residual, non-flowing water was limited by formation of oxygen deficits.
