Notizen: Abstract The role of symmetry in simplifying the theory of complex neural systems is argued. When the structural symmetries of a network are expressed as an ismorphism group, implications emerge for the dynamics. Various qualitative possibilities concerning stability of uniform motion in homogeneous nets are discussed and an approach to neural hierarchies is outlined.

Notizen: Abstract Rashevsky's treatment of general binary relations between sets of biological elements is extended using the novel mathematical concept of lattice-valued relation (l.v.r.). This yields a quantitative measure of the strength of the relations between components of a biological organism, and some illustrative examples are given. Specific l.v.r.'s are used to define (more precisely than in Rashevsky's preliminary theory of binary relations) the biologically important relationships amongst hormones, metabolism and energy exchange involved in metabolic reactions. The ‘strongest link’ between the set of hormones and the set of metabolic reactions is quantified using a special l.v.r., and other specific biological realisations of lattice-valued relations in abstract-relational biology are presented. L.v.r.'s may also be regarded as a form ofG-relation in relational biology, or as a particular case of generating diagrams. Further possible developments of this approach, using more complex tools of the newly developed mathematical theory of lattice-valued relations, such as function space l.v.r., group l.v.r., l.v.r. morphisms, l.v.r. homology andn-ary l.v.r.'s are suggested.

Notizen: Abstract The concept of a tolerance net formalises simultaneously spatial closeness and nearness of neuronal activity. A method of constructing tolerance group nets is presented, leading to a means of construction of all very homogenous tolerance nets as group quotients. The dihedral group of order eight is taken as an illustrative example.

Notizen: Abstract Arbib in a paper entitled ‘Categories of (M, R)-Systems' represents both simple (M, R)-systems and those with varying genome as subcategories of the category of automata. An alternative characterisation of general (M, R)-systems as automata is proposed and two theorems on (M, R)-automata are proved. The two categories of automata, namely Arbib in a paper entilled ‘Categories of (M,R)-Systems’ represents both simple (M, R)-systems with variable genetic structure, are compared.

Notizen: Abstract The geometry of the human bronchial tree has been described as a network formed by successive dichotomous branching with constant branching angles and geometrically decaying branch lengths. Models having these properties and with randomly distributed branching planes are constructed. The distribution of the end points of the model networks are described by computing the variance of the distributions in the direction of the axis of the network and in the transverse directions. It is found that, for a given decay ratio, there is a branching angle for which the volume filled by the end points is a maximum. The advantages of the network with the decay ratio and branching angle of the human bronchial tree are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The scattering and depolarization of light from spherical membrane systems, vesicles, is calculated in a new succinct formalism appropriate to spherical systems and the rotations of anisotropic elements composing them. The results of Tinker (1972) and Mishima (1980, 1981) are readily derived within this formalism and there is a considerable saving in numerical computation. The problem of fluctuations in the molecular packing of the component phospholipid molecules is also addressed.

Notizen: Abstract We draw attention to a visual observation of a brief flash from ζ Lyrae, observed by Heis in 1850, which resembles the optical burst detected electronically by Wdowiak and Clifton (1985) from β Cam in 1969. Visual observation by the author of a second magnitude flash of very short duration is shown to originate from planar reflection from a very distant satellite. Such flashes will contribute to the ‘noise’ in all-sky searches for optical counterparts of γ-ray bursters.

Notizen: Abstract The similarity in properties of GK Per and BV Cen suggests that the latter may be a classical nova remnant rather than a dwarf nova. Our Hα and V CCD photometry show no sign of a nova shell but disclose the presence of a close and probably physical companion. BV(RI) c CCD photometry of the companion, assumed to be a dwarf, givesM v =3.1±0.3 for BV Cen at quiescence. Even though half of the light in BV Cen comes from the secondary this is much brighter than expected for a dwarf nova and supports the conclusion that BV Cen was an unrecorded nova.

Notizen: Abstract A broad class of problems involving the optimal control of robot arms can be formulated as dynamic programming problems whose structure is particularly attractive for parallel processing. For certain simple cost functions the dynamic programming formulation reduces to determining the shortest path through a network. This algorithm has been implemented on a Floating Point Systems' T-20 hypercube computer. An analysis of the performance of the algorithm provides several important insights into the interplay between problem size and the number of processors in a parallel computer. The results also underscore the potential for parallel computers in real-time control applications.
