Description: The interplay of molecular weight, layer thickness, and thermal annealing in controlling molecular order in ultrathin Langmuir-Blodgett films is characterized with the use of polarization-modulation laser-scanning microscopy. The degree and direction of molecular alignment can be imaged rapidly and sensitively through the magnitude and orientation of linear dichroism in Langmuir-Blodgett films of rodlike poly(phthalocyaninatosiloxane) (PcPS). Images are presented for films as thin as two molecular layers ( approximately 44 angstroms). Molecular alignment along the transfer direction is much stronger for films of PcPS with approximately 25 repeat units ( approximately 10 nanometers long) than for those with approximately 50 repeat units ( approximately 20 nanometers long). Enhancement of alignment by thermal annealing is also much greater for PcPS-25 than PcPS-50. Intimate interaction with the substrate suppresses improvement in alignment by annealing, evident by an anomalously small increase in anisotropic absorption of the first two layers.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gupta, V K -- Kornfield, J A -- Ferencz, A -- Wegner, G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1994 Aug 12;265(5174):940-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17782146" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Abstract In the present communication a simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of Zn is described. The method is based on the reaction of Zn with the newly synthesized reagent o-carboxyphenyl-diazoaminoazobenzene in an alkaline medium where the reagent is in the aci-form. The complex exhibits an absorption maximum at 530 nm and Beer's law is valid over the concentration range of 0.0001 to 0.0008 mg mL−1. Various analytical parameeters for colour development have been studied. The method has been successfully applied for the determination of Zn in tap water, milk and standard Zn samples.

Notes: Summary A spectrophotometric determination of hydrogen cyanide in air is described. Hydrogen cyanide from air is collected in dilute sodium hydroxide and then reacted with pyridine forming glutaconic aldehyde. The glutaconic aldehyde thus formed is subsequently coupled with aqueous phloroglucinol solution to form a polymethine red-violet dye having absorbance maxima at 540 nm. The colour system obeys Beer's law in the range of 0.45 to 3.6 mg/m3 of hydrogen cyanide (0.4 to 3.2 μg/g). Collection efficiency of absorbing solution, molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity have been evaluated. All other important analytical parameters have been studied and applied for the determination/detection of hydrogen cyanide in air samples and cigarette smoke.

Notes: Abstract A personal computer (PC)-based system integrating a manual CMM and a CAD system has been developed for on-line capture of 3D point data, resulting in the automation of the inspection process. The sequence of steps taken to measure a master component using the CMM is stored in a measurement program in ‘teach mode’ and replayed for repetitive measurement of a batch of identical components in the ‘replay mode’. The measurement program guides the CMM operator regarding the geometric entity to be measured, the number of points to be input and the direction to be followed for taking the points on the CMM. The operator has simply to follow the sequence displayed on the computer screen. The program automatically computes the dimensions and the deviations from the corresponding dimensions of the master component. The 3D measurement data from the CMM are transferred to a CAD system in real time. Programs have been developed to create 3D cubic splines and surfaces from the 3D point data taken on the CMM. The full features of the CAD software can be used to manipulate the 3D point data for CAD applications.

Notes: Summary Phylogenetic relations among the three species in grain amaranth need investigation to provide information for breeding experiments germplasm conservation efforts, and decision on evolutionary patterns in the grain types. Hybrid development from crosses between species was studied to find out genetic relationship between them. Interspecific crosses were made among Amaranthus hypochondriacus, A. caudatus and A. cruentus in the glasshouse. The F1 plants were relatively easy to obtain but had low pollen fertility (10.3–15.1%) and low seed set. A few of these hybrids did not produce seeds. Only a few F1 seeds obtained in crosses between A. cruentus and A. caudatus. All the F1 plants from these crosses died at the seedling stage. Crosses between A. cruentus and A. hypochondriacus produced few seeds. Most of the F1 plants obtained from the seeds died at the seedling stage with only four plants growing to maturity but were sterile. Based on hybrid development, it was suggested that A. hypochondriacus and A. caudatus were genetically closer than the other two combinations of species studied. A. cruentus seemed to be genetically closer to A. hypochondriacus than it was to A. caudatus.

Notes: Summary Intraspecific crosses involving five cultivars of Amaranthus hypochondriacus and two from A. caudatus were studied to investigate the inheritance of five morphological traits (seed coat colour, inflorescence colour, seedling colour, oval leaf mark and purple leaf mark). Seedling colour, inflorescence colour, seed coat colour and oval leaf mark segregated to a 3:1 ratio and therefore each was controlled by a single dominant gene. The purple leaf mark segregated in 9:7 ratio and hence may be controlled by two dominant genes. Simultaneous segregation for seed coat colour and inflorescence colour gave a ratio of 9:3:3:1. Similar genetic ratio was observed for the simultaneous segregation for oval leaf mark and inflorescence colour. It was suggested that each of these traits is controlled by independent genes.

Notes: Abstract We rederive the bulk viscosity of strange quark matter from the dominant reactionu + s ↔d + u by taking the effect of temperature and quark-gluon coupling perturbatively to first order in the chemical composition of the quark matter. We also calculate the contribution from the β-decay processes s(d) →u + e + ¯v andu + e → s(d)+ v and show that this contribution has different temperature dependence and can even be larger than the contribution from the former reaction at temperatures of the order of the electron Fermi energy.
