    Notes: Tn552, one of several closely related β-lactamase-encoding transposons from Staphylococcus aureus, has a novel set of putative transposition functions. Each is homologous with a well-characterized function from a different type of mobile genetic element. Thus, Tn552 encodes: (i) resL-binL, a co-integrate resolution system homologous with those of Tn3 family elements; (ii) p480, a potential transposase significantly homologous with the DNA integrases of eukaryotic retroviruses and retrotransposons; and (iii) p271, a potential ATP-binding protein that shows homology with the B protein of phage Mu. The 3′terminal nucleotides of Tn552 (CA), adjacent to which p480 might cleave, are the same as those of retro-viruses, retrotransposons and phage Mu. The presumptive resolvase (BinL) is very closely related to BinR, which was identified as a DNA invertase and is now shown to resolve an artificial co-integrate in vivo. Furthermore, the structure of the derivative of Tn552 found in the staphylococcal plasmid pl258 can be explained by a BinL (or BinR)-mediated site-specific deletion (‘resolution’) event. Thus, pl258 contains only the right-hand half of Tn552, which encodes the β-lactamase and two regulatory proteins. The latter are homologous with the β-lactamase gene repressor and co-inducer of Bacillus licheniformis. Interestingly, the order of the regulatory genes is reversed in S. aureus compared with Bacillus licheniformis.

    Notes: Case histories of some of Australia's most threatened native freshwater fishes are presented. These include: six endangered species, Galaxias fontanus, G. johnsroni, G. pedderensis (Galaxiidae), Melanataenia euchamensis (Melanotaeniidae), Maccullochella sp. nov. and M. macquariensis (Percichthyidae): one vulnerable species, Galaxias tanycephalus: two potentially threatened species. Galaxias parvus and Prototroctes maraena (Prototroctidae); one indeterminate species. Maccllochella sp.; one restricted species, Macquaria australasica (Percichthyidae). Aspects of their taxonomy, distribution and reasons for their decline are discussed. Conservation management strategies that have been or are being applied to most of these species include protection of the fish and their habitats, establishment of refuge populations, and artificial propagation and re-establishment programmes.

    Notes: Abstract. This study aims at quantifying the effect of rheology on plan-view shapes of lava flows using fractal geometry. Plan-view shapes of lava flows are important because they reflect the processes governing flow emplacement and may provide insight into lava-flow rheology and dynamics. In our earlier investigation (Bruno et al. 1992), we reported that flow margins of basalts are fractal, having a characteristic shape regardless of scale. We also found we could use fractal dimension (D, a parameter which quantifies flow-margin convolution) to distinguish between the two endmember types of basalts: a′a (D: 1.05–1.09) and pahoehoe (D: 1.13–1.23). In this work, we confirm those earlier results for basalts based on a larger database and over a wider range of scale (0.125 m–2.4 km). Additionally, we analyze ten silicic flows (SiO2: 52–74%) over a similar scale range (10 m–4.5 km). We note that silicic flows tend to exhibit scale-dependent, or non-fractal, behavior. We attribute this breakdown of fractal behavior at increased silica contents to the suppression of small-scale features in the flow margin, due to the higher viscosities and yield strengths of silicic flows. These results suggest we can use the fractal properties of flow margins as a remote-sensing tool to distinguish flow types. Our evaluation of the nonlinear aspects of flow dynamics indicates a tendency toward fractal behavior for basaltic lavas whose flow is controlled by internal fluid dynamic processes. For silicic flows, or basaltic flows whose flow is controlled by steep slopes, our evaluation indicates non-fractal behavior, consistent with our observations.
