Notes: X-ray-diffraction studies carried out on Tb0.27Dy0.73Fe2−xCox (x=0,0.5,1.2,2.0) revealed that all compositions investigated retained the C-15 cubic Laves phase structure. Magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements were carried out in the temperature range 77–800 K. Anomalies observed in the resistivity measurements have been identified corresponding to spin reorientation transitions occurring in this system. Some of these transitions have also been observed in the magnetization data. Magnetostriction and magnetomechanical coupling coefficient were measured on samples of x=0, 0.5, and 1.2 prepared by arc melting as well as arc melting followed by zoning using an induction furnace. Magnetostriction and coupling coefficient were found to decrease with increase in cobalt concentration. Magnetostriction data on zoned samples revealed a change in the easy direction of magnetization from [111] to [100] in the case of x=0.5.

Notes: Magnetostriction and magnetomechanical coupling coefficient have been measured on Ho0.85Tb0.15Fe2−xCox (x=0, 0.5, and 1.2) alloys. The alloys were prepared by arc melting as well as by arc melting followed by zoning using induction furnace. Saturation magnetostriction (λs) and magnetomechanical coupling coefficient are found to decrease with the increase of cobalt concentration. The λs values of the zoned samples of x=0 and 0.5 are seen to be more than those of arc melted samples whereas, it is otherwise in the case of x=1.2. Magnetomechanical coupling coefficient values for all the samples are seen to increase with zoning. Change in the easy direction of magnetization in the case of x=1.2 is reflected in the magnetostriction of zoned samples.

Notes: The electrical resistivity studies have been carried out on the C 15-type Laves phase intermetallic compounds Zr1−xHoxCo2 (0≤x≤1) and their hydrides in the temperature range 16–300 K. The first-order magnetic transition occurring for x=1 disappears for lower Ho concentrations. Anomalies in the form of resistivity minima observed for the intermediate x values are attributed to the spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the magnetic ordering temperature. On hydrogen absorption, the first-order transition observed for x=1.0 as well as the anomalies observed for the other x values disappear at higher hydrogen concentrations. A concentration-dependent metal-semiconductor-like transition has been observed in all cases. This may be a consequence of charge transfer taking place between hydrogen and the 3d band, which leads to a strong decrease in the conduction electron density. The activation energy is evaluated from the ln ρ vs 1/T plots.

Notes: Cubic Laves phase alloys of Ho0.85Tb0.15Fe2−xNix (0≤x≤2) were prepared and the lattice parameters, evaluated as a function of x at room temperature, show deviation from Vegard's law. This was attributed to the presence of a magnetovolume effect and charge transfer. Magnetization measurements were performed in the temperature range 77–700 K. The results suggest that the system undergoes a gradual transition from ferri- to ferromagnetic with increasing x. This has been explained based on the 3d band model. Furthermore, a monotonic decrease in Curie temperature with x was observed. Electrical resistivity studies were carried out in the temperature range 16–700 K. An anomaly was found in the vicinity of the Curie temperature for x=2 which has been attributed to the existence of the long-range nature of the critical fluctuations due to short-range spin ordering.

Notes: 57Fe Mossbauer measurements were carried out on Ho0.85Tb0.15Fe2Hx (x=0–3.1) and Dy0.73Tb0.27Fe2Hx (x=0–3.3) in the temperature range 105–360 K. The hyperfine field at the iron site was found to increase slightly with increasing hydrogen concentration in both the systems. The temperature variation studies of the hyperfine fields, the quadrupole coupling constant and the isomer shift suggest the occurance of spin reorientation. The isomer shift studied as a function of concentration indicate the charge transfer from Fe to hydrogen.

Notes: Abstract A series of Mo/MgO catalysts with loadings ranging from 2–12 wt% Mo were studied by oxygen chemisorption, X-ray diffraction and activity for thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction. The results obtained from the above measurements are compared with those on Mo/-γ-Al2O3. These results indicated that molybdenum is better dispersed on MgO. Hydrodesulfurization activity per g. Mo is found to be higher in the case of Mo/MgO. The higher activities are attributed to the increase in dispersion of Mo on MgO. A linear correlation is obtained between oxygen chemisorption and HDS activity. The parallelism between HDS and oxygen chemisorption is explained.

Notes: Abstract IR laser chemistry of (CF3Br/Cl2) mixture and neat CF2HCl are examined in the context of 13C enrichment. Decomposition extent, enrichment factor and energy absorbed are measured for both systems at their respective optimum conditions. A direct comparison is obtained by keeping extraneous factors such as laser, its pulse duration, cell, irradiation geometry etc. the same. The halogen scavenged CF3Br MPD requires lower fluence compared to neat CF2HCl irradiation. Overall throughput for a product with 60–65% 13C content in a single stage is the same for both systems requiring a similar amount of energy. However, at lower enrichment levels, CF2HCl MPD is better than (CF3Br/Cl2) photolysis in terms of both product yield and energy absorption.

Notes: Abstract The dissociation of UF6 sensitized by multiple photon excitation of a series of halomethanes: CF4, CF3Cl, and CF2Cl2 has been investigated. The roles of various experimental parameters like exciting frequency, fluence and pressures of sensitizer/UF6 on the dissociation yield were studied to examine (1) the characteristics of the sensitizer/UF6 system and (2) the coupling of vibrational energy between two molecular systems. The efficiency of the energy transfer process was estimated on the basis of long range dipole-dipole interaction to gain an understanding of the dissociation process.

Notes: Abstract Prices for ferro-alloys have hardened due to the closure of plants in developed countries on account of increasingly stringent pollution control legislation, resulting in a higher cost of production. A ferro-alloy industry with a capacity of 80000 MT per annum was selected to study the nature of pollution. Because of the objectionable nature of polluting air in and around the plant it was located in a rural area where there was no other industry. The area was agriculturally active and there was no effective control system for this plant. The quality of ambient air around the plant site is discussed in this paper along with the meteorological conditions. The maximum concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) was 768 µg/NM3 downwind of the plant, minimum 184 µg/NM3, and the average was more than 446 µg/NM3. The presence of heavy metals, viz. Fe, Mn, Cr and Pb, was also assessed. The concentration of Fe was 50 µg/NM3 downwind and 10 µg/NM3 upwind. The concentration of other metals followed a similar trend.
