Abstract The thermal and structural effects of elevated temperatures on the basic creep of unsealed hardened cement paste are isolated by means of an experimental scheme, involving different combinations of preheat and loading temperature in the range 300 to 635°C. The thermal effect is found to obey an Arrhenius-type rate theory, yielding bilinear Arrhenius plots. The structural effect is found to consist of a strength reduction component, which increases the creep potential, and a stabilization component, which decreases the creep potential. The percentage weight loss is found to be a suitable descriptor of the stabilization component in the above temperature range.
