Notes: We present experimental results about a position-sensitive γ detector with a diameter of 75 mm, a position resolution of 3.5 mm, and a good linearity for 662 keV γ rays using a NaI or plastic scintillator. The detector is designed to solve some of the Anger camera's readout problems and to be as close as possible to the sample in a 90° perturbed angular correlation experiment. It might substitute up to 100 smaller detectors with the same angular resolution or could cover 70% of the 4π geometry in crystal ball experiments. The setup allows easy and fast signal processing in angular correlation experiments due to the use of point symmetry in the experiment as well as in data analysis.

Notes: Trace impurities of vanadium in Lely-grown silicon carbide single crystals have been detected by their strong, polytype-specific photoluminescence in the 1.3–1.5 μm near-infrared spectral range, as well as by infrared absorption. The spectra arise from the intra-3d-shell transitions 2E(3d1)→2T2(3d1) of V4+Si(3d1). Electron spin resonance reveals that VSi in SiC acts as a deep acceptor, V4+Si(3d1)/V3+Si(3d2)−ˆA0/A−, and possibly also as a deep donor. The role of vanadium as minority-carrier lifetime killer in SiC-based optoelectronic devices is suggested from these data.

Notes: Electron spin resonance (ESR) of silicon-substitutional vanadium in its neutral V4+Si (3d1) state has been observed in cubic bulk 3C-SiC single crystals. By photo-ESR the position of the (0/+) deep donor level of vanadium could be located at EV+1.7 eV. Using this level as common reference in 3C-SiC and 6H-SiC, the valence-band discontinuity in the 3C-SiC/6H-SiC interface is predicted as ΔEV=0.1 eV, with the valence band of 3C-SiC lying lower in energy. We also offer an explanation for the absence of intra-3d-shell infrared luminescence of V4+ (3d1) in 3C-SiC. © 1994 American Institue of Physics.

Notes: A characteristic infrared luminescence spectrum, dominated by a zero-phonon line at 1.30 eV, has been observed on AlN polycrystalline material. It is assigned to the spin-forbidden internal 3d–3d transition 4T1(G)→6A1(S) of Fe3+Al(3d5). By photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy the (-/0) acceptor level of iron in AlN could be located at EV+3.0 eV. The corresponding value for iron in GaN is EV+2.5 eV. From these values, the valence-band offset in AlN/GaN heterojunctions is predicted as ΔEV=0.5 eV, the conduction-band offset as ΔEC=2.3 eV. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electromagnetic levitation has been used to undercool an alloy of Co80Pd20 below the Curie temperature of the solid α phase. If the temperature of the undercooled liquid decreases below the Curie temperature an attractive force between the sample and an external permanent magnet was observed. This may indicate the existence of a metallic liquid showing magnetic ordering.

Notes: A characteristic infrared luminescence band, dominated by a zero-phonon line at 1.30 eV has been consistently detected in gallium nitride (GaN) epitaxial layers. It is assigned to the intra-3d-shell transitions 4T1(G)→6A1(S) of omnipresent iron trace impurities, Fe3+Ga(3d5). Another infrared emission is often also observed at 1.19 eV. This is tentatively assigned to chromium trace impurities, Cr4+Ga(3d2). The role of iron and chromium as minority-carrier lifetime killers in GaN-based optoelectronic devices is suggested from these data.

Notes: Abstract In previous Perturbed-Angular-Correlation (PAC) studies of the γ-γ emission of 111In probe nuclei in cold-worked or particle-irradiated nickel, it has been found that thermal annealing in the temperature regime of recovery stage III leads to the formation of so-called C-defects (Cubic defects). This is indicated by the occurrence of a new frequency of about 80 Mrad/s, in addition to the frequency (≈200 Mrad/s) that is due to 111In on substitutional sites. Obviously, the C-defects are complexes consisting of 111In and the intrinsic point-defect species that migrates freely in recovery stage III. Therefore, they have played an important rôle in the long-standing controversy on whether the recovery-stage-III defects are vacancies (one-interstitial model) or self-interstitials (two-interstitial model). The present paper reports on a novel experimental effort to reveal the nature of the C-defects by combining PAC studies on nickel samples differently pretreated in a systematic way, investigations of the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) on In-doped nickel, and measurements of the decay rate of 111In nuclei in the Electron-Capture-Induced Decay (ECID). On the basis of the results of these experiments it is concluded that the defects trapped by substitutional 111In atoms (Ins) in recovery stage III are self-interstitials (I), as expected according to the two-interstitial model. Moreover, there is evidence that the C-defects are In interstitials on tetrahedral sites (Ini) that form exclusively in the vicinity of the specimen surface from Ins − I pairs via the reaction Ins+I → Ini.

Notes: Abstract High spin states of 127 Ba have been investigated by means of the OSIRIS anti-compton γ -spectrometer. Five new bands, 48levels and 77transitions were found. Spin suggestions for four bandheads could be given. On ground of these suggestions routhians and alignments were compiled for the observed bands, giving a first insight into the high spin structure of this nucleus.

Notes: Abstract The level structure of196Po has been studied using a160Dy(40Ar, 4n) reaction and a recoil-catcher technique to reduce fission. The results showed a sharp drop off in the first (2+) and (4+) energies relative to systematics implying an abrupt increase in the quadrupole collectivity at N=112. In addition, second (2+) and(4+) states were identified at 859 and 1388 keV, respectively, suggesting the discovery of a 4p2h deformed band in Po isotopes which is related to known 2p2h proton bands in several Pb isotopes. A prompt183W(20Ne, 5n@#@) experiment located similar second 2+ and 4+ states at 1039 and 1483 keV in198Po providing corroboration and extended information on the properties of the new Po deformed bands. A measured halflife of 850 (90) ns for the 2491 keV (11−) state in196Po implied collective E3 contributions to the extractedB (@#@ E3; 11−→8+)=27(5) W.u.

Notes: Abstract The reaction58Ni(36Ar,α qρ)88Mo has been studied at 145 MeV beam energy. A detector array consisting of the OSIRIS spectrometer, four charged-particleΔE detectors and seven NE213 neutron detectors has been used to meaure the gamma radiation inγγ- and particle-γγ-coincidence mode. The level scheme of88Mo has been extended up to 11.6 MeV excitation energy and probable spin 23ħ; some 70 transitions and 40 levels have been identified. Spin assignments have been proposed on the basis of measured DCO ratios. Hartree Fock cranking calculations of the Total Routhians and shell model calculations of the high spin states are presented which imply near-sphericity of the yrast line up to the highest spins found. A classification of the high spin states according to their leading seniority is proposed.
