Notes: Synthesis of thermoplastic elastomers derived from poly-tetramethylene glycol (PTME glycol), dimethylterephthalate and different mixtures of ethylene and butylene glycol is described. Extended heating near the crystalline melting point of these systems leads to a measurable increase in the melting point of 15-20°C. This ordering process can be reversed by heating at 250°C or well above the melting point. These results are interpreted in terms of sequence ordering within existing crystallites via interchain transesterification on heating near the melting point. Heating at 250°C is best explained as randomization of the ordered ester units.

Notes: A new approach for design of improved interfacial bonding between carbon fibers and polymeric matrices is described. In this method the affinity of surface-treated carbon fibers to various polymer matrices is simulated by analyzing the adsorption characteristics of model compounds, typical of the polymer units, onto very high surface area carbon fibers. The affinity can be evaluated by the use of Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to measure adsorption-desorption characteristics. Since high surface area, activated carbon fibers (ACF) can be chemically treated to obtain acidic, basic, nonpolar or highly polar surfaces, it should be possible to assess the interactions of chemically modified surfaces with model compounds such as methanol (MeOH), acetone, dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylether, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water. Some preliminary results are presented, indicating that surface treatments for carbon fibers other than oxidation may lead to enhanced bonding with polymeric matrices.

Notes: Fabrication of oxidation-resistant carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites requires use of high-temperature CVD deposition of coatings such as SiC. In this paper the use of low-temperature chemical approaches for depositing oxidation-resistant coatings was explored. Coatings of SiO2, B2O3, and SiC were examined, with the intent of distinguishing possible failure mechanisms. Factors contributing to poor oxidation resistance of these coatings include presence of microcracks in the original preparation of the coating and diffusion of oxygen through the coating at high temperatures.

Notes: During the past ten years there has been a sharp increase in interest in the opportunities afforded by R & D in the field of specialty polymers. Interest is mainly being shown in two distinct categories of polymers, namely, (a) polymers which are used in very small quantities to fulfill critical needs as a part of device system, and (b) high-performance engineering polymers which significantly extend their mechanical and thermal properties for structural applications. The first category ranges from advanced resists and insulating layers for microelectronic devices to membranes for filtration systems. The second category encompasses improved matrices for advanced composites as well as liquid crystalline polymers. In the present paper an overview is first given of the emerging opportunities for advanced materials and particularly specialty polymers. The status of work on liquid crystalline copolyesters is then discussed with special emphasis on one of the major problems confronting this field, namely interpreting the microstructure of the copolyesters.
