Notes: Perylene quinone compounds of natural and syntheitc origin have been investigated for their quantum efficiency of singlet-oxygen production (ΦΔ). The results may be interpreted by a qualitative relation between ΦΔ and the planarity of the sensitizer molecules, highest values (0.8-0.9) being observed where planarity is favoring tautomeric structures. On the other hand, derivatives exhibiting non-planar quinoid structures show lower ΦΔ, and methylated derivatives react photochemically.

Notes: The efficiency of aromatic ketones as singlet-oxygen (1O2(1Δg)) sensitizers can vary considerably with the electronic configuration of their lowest triplet state and the solvent used. Near-infrared measurements of tie luminescence of singlet oxygen have shown that the quantum yield of singlet-oxygen production (ΦΔ) by 1H-phenalen-1-one (1) is close to unity in both polar (ΦΔ = 0.97±0.03 in methanol) and non-polar solvents (ΦΔ = 0.93±0.04 in benzene). Analysis of the absorption spectra of the ground state and phosphorescence measurements show that the lowest singlet and triplet states have dominant π, π* electronic configurations. The quantum yield of intersystem crossing (ΦISC) of 1, determined by laser flash photolysis (partial-saturation method), is equal to unity. In comparison with other aromatic ketones, these parameters are important for the discussion of the surprisingly high ΦISC of 1 and the efficient energy transfer from its triplet state to molecular oxygen. The 1H-phenalen-1-one (1), being one of the most efficient singlet-oxygen sensitizers in both polar and non-polar media, could be used as a reference sensitizer, in particular in the area of relatively high energies of excitation.

Notes: The reactivity of singlet oxygen (O2(1Δg)) with edta and its metal complexes with Al3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Mn2+ was investigated. The emission of singlet oxygen at 1270 nm in D2O was measured in order to determine the quenching efficiency of edta and edta-metal complexes for different metal/edta ratios. The sum of the rate constant (kr + kq) of the chemical reaction between singlet oxygen and the acceptor (kr) and of the physical quenching of singlet oxygen by the acceptor (kq) was obtained by a Stern-Volmer analysis. Measurements of the oxygen consumption in H2O were used to determine quantum yields of the sensitized photooxidation, and the combined results of these experiments allowed the determination of kr and kq separately. A strong isotope effect was observed between the deuterated and the hydrogenated solvents. This effect was shown to be independent of the analytical procedure used. The isotope effect, as well as the reactivity of edta and its metal complexes, depend markedly on the complexed metal ion.
