Notes: Comparisons between experimentally measured time-dependent electron energy distribution functions and optical emission intensities are reported for low-frequency (100 and 400 kHz) radio-frequency driven discharges in argon. The electron energy distribution functions were measured with a time-resolved Langmuir probe system. Time-resolved optical emissions of argon resonance lines at 687.1 and 750.4 nm were determined by photon-counting methods. Known ground-state and metastable-state excitation cross sections were used along with the measured electron energy distribution functions to calculate the time dependence of the optical emission intensity. It was found that a calculation using only the ground-state cross sections gave the best agreement with the time dependence of the measured optical emission. Time-dependent electron density, electron temperature, and plasma potential measurements are also reported.

Notes: A low-frequency (100 kHz) radio frequency discharge has been characterized by making time-resolved measurements of the basic plasma parameters, including the electron energy-distribution function. Measurements obtained when operating with H2, D2, and Ar are compared. Surprisingly low electron temperatures (∼0.2 eV) have been found in H2 and D2 discharges.

Notes: Genetic influences on female reproductive cycles were analysed in histocompatibilitycongenic strains of mice. Oestrous cycles of young, virgin mice of inbred-congenic strains, hybrid crosses (F1, and parental-hybrid backcrosses (F2) were monitored for 3 months. Oestrous cycles were categorized by length (inter-oestrous interval): 4,5,6, or 7–14 days. Mice with the following H-2 haplotypes had a greater proportion of 5-day oestrous cycles: H-2b, H-2r, H-2h2, H-2h4, and H-2i5. In contrast, the H-2k and H-2d haplotypes had mostly 4-day oestrous cycles. Influences of H-2 haplotype were seen on two genetic backgrounds, C57BL/10Sn and C3H. Non-H-2 alleles were also implied by different patterns of cycles between strains with the same H-2b haplotype: C57BL/10Sn with predominantly 5-day cycles vs. C57BL/6J with a mix of 4- and 5-day cycles. The genetic basis for strain differences was investigation in F1 hybrids and their backcrosses. F1 hybrids of an H-2b (C57BL/10Sn; 5-day cycles) and an H-2k (B10.BR; 4-day cycles) strain had mostly 5-day cycles, indicating dominance of an H-2b allele(s). However, F1 hybrids from the reciprocal B6 × B10 cross (both H-2b) also display a preponderance of 5-day cycles, indicating dominance of a non-H-2 autosomal allele from the C57BL/10Sn strain. Among F2 mice, a ‘4-day’ phenotype segregated with homozygosity for the k haplotype (P 〈 0.05, χ2). These findings demonstrate the influence of genetic differences at the major histocompatibility complex on oestrous cycles.

Notes: : Much of north-central Iowa is characterized by flat topography, shallow depressions, and poor natural surface drainage. Land drainage systems comprising of tile drains and agricultural drainage wells (ADWs) are used as outlets for subsurface drainage of cropland under corn and soybean production. Studies have shown that these drainage systems, mainly the ADWs, are potential routes for agricultural chemicals to underground aquifers. To protect the region's vital groundwater resource, researchers are evaluating alternative outlets ranging from complete closure of existing ADWs (and creation of wetlands) to continued use of ADWs and chemical management in a comprehensive policy framework. This paper presents the results of a study designed to provide government jurisdictions, farmers, and land managers information for assessing the impact of closing ADWs on crop production. The study couples a geographic information systems database for a 471-hectare watershed in Humboldt County, Iowa, with a groundwater flow model (MODFLOW) and an empirical crop yield loss model to predict long-term effects of complete closure of ADWs on crop production. The cropland areas inundated and the relative crop yield loss due to ADW closure are determined as a function of long-term climatic data. The results indicate that elimination of drainage outlets in the watershed could result in ponding of low-lying areas and poorly drained soils, making them unsuitable for crop production. Such wetness also decreases the efficiency of production in the no-ponding areas by isolating fields, and the crop yield loss can be reduced by an annual average of about 18 percent.

Notes: Abstract Degradation of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and copolymers with 3-hydroxyvaleric acid was investigated in natural environments, and the microorganisms involved were isolated and identified. The influence of abiotic and biotic factors on the degradation is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Cholera toxin subunit b was found in vivo and in vitro to label interstitial cells of Cajal in the intestine of rat and mouse. Cholera toxin-labelled interstitial cells were present in the subserosa, the myenteric plexus and the deep muscular plexus of mouse small intestine, and the deep muscular plexus only of the rat small intestine. In the large intestine of the mouse, interstitial cells were present in the subserosa and in a plexus associated with the inner surface of the circular muscle, while in the rat they were only present in the latter location. Macrophages, which were present in many of the same locations as interstitial cells, were also labelled by cholera toxin but could be distinguished from interstitial cells by their ability to take-up fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled dextran. Labelling with subunit b of cholera toxin is a simple way of labelling interstitial cells of Cajal and which is compatible with a range of physiological and histological procedures.

Notes: Abstract Most continuum descriptions of damage evolution generally require history-dependent material variables. The Lagrangian formulation of the continuum equations is the natural coordinate system for tracking material-history quantities. In numerical simulations of dynamic events such as in penetration and perforation of target plates by projectiles, the Lagrangian mesh can become severely compressed and distorted which effectively terminates advancing the solution in time. On the other hand, the Eulerian formulation, with its fixed coordinate system, does not suffer from mesh distortion. However, Eulerian descriptions usually follow only what crosses cell boundaries, and instead of computing the time history of material particles, they describe the average instantaneous state of a material in a computational zone. This paper describes the inclusion and evaluation of the history of equivalent plastic strain, which is a representative measure of damage, as an internal state variable within an Eulerian numerical framework. The formulation and method of advection of the equivalent plastic strain are described, and the results for two example problems are discussed and comparisons are made with the results of Lagrangian calculations.

Notes: Summary The intestine of Aldrichetta forsteri was examined ultrastructurally for evidence of 5-HT-containing intrinsic neurons. A population of nerve cell bodies and processes characterized by the presence of amine-containing vesicles was found after the destruction of adrenergic processes with 6-hydroxydopamine. The distribution of the neurons matched that of the 5-HT-containing neurons previously seen with formaldehyde-induced fluorescence and 5-HT immunohistochemistry in A. forsteri and other teleosts. The axons made close contacts with the circular smooth muscle layer and the muscularis mucosae. The axons also lay exposed to the epithelial cells of the mucosa but did not make contact with neurons or with the longitudinal smooth muscle layer.
