Description: Increased immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) appear months to years before the clinical onset of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and define populations at high risk for this EBV-associated epithelial cancer common in south China. In the human HT-29 epithelial cell line, polymeric IgA (pIgA) specific for EBV promoted infection of the otherwise refractory epithelial cells. When bound to pIgA, EBV entered epithelial cells through secretory component-mediated IgA transport but no longer infected B lymphocytes. Such an immune-induced shift in EBV tissue tropism provides a paradigm for endogenous spread of EBV in the immune host that predicts infectious sequelae of epithelium.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sixbey, J W -- Yao, Q Y -- CA21765/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA38877/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA52258/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Mar 20;255(5051):1578-80.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Infectious Diseases, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, TN 38101-0318.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1312750" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The variations of the electrical resistivity, the magnetization, and the grain-boundary precipitates of a Ni-rich Ni-In alloy system with In concentration up to 7.5 at. % have been investigated as functions of annealing time at 773 K. For samples homogenized at 1225 K, clear grain boundaries are observed. However, for these aged samples, we observed both grain-boundary precipitates and variations of the electrical resistivity and the magnetization; and the binary alloy with higher In concentration has the higher variation rate in the decrease of the electrical resistivity, the increase of the magnetization, and the growth of the grain-boundary precipitates.

Notes: High-pressure high-temperature sintering (HHS) under 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 GPa for a short time was directly used to reduce n-type Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y. Superconductors with higher critical temperature were obtained. The samples display lower resistivity, and more metalliclike resistance behavior at normal state with increasing sintering pressure. A small increase of lattice parameter and cell volume was observed via electron and x-ray diffraction. Transmission electron microscopy studies also show that there is a preferential orientation along the c axis among the neighboring grains. This helps get well-matching grain boundaries in the HHS samples. A Cu2O high-pressure phase was found via energy-dispersive x-ray analysis in the sample treated above 5.0 GPa, which is thought to be a deleterious factor for superconductivity. Sintering under suitable pressure not only enhances the intragranular conductivity, but also effectively improves the intergranular links. Finally, via the assumed interstitial oxygen ordering in the T' structure, a possible mechanism of n-type reduction is proposed based on the change in tolerance factor under reduction atmosphere and high pressure.

Notes: The optical, electrical, and magnetic properties of magnetic Nd15Fe77B8 and nonmagnetic Nd5Fe62B33 films have been investigated. It has been found that within the visible (wavelengths 4400–6400 A(ring)) the films are transparent with thickness less than 800 A(ring) for magnetic films and 1500 A(ring) for nonmagnetic films. This is due to the difference of the magnetic permeability μ between films. The oscillatory behavior with thickness of the films is observed in the film samples. The anomalous behaviors near the Curie temperature for both bulk- and film-type samples are similar to that of the type-III ferromagnets. The temperature at which the electrical resistance of the film-type samples increases abruptly varies from 620 K for 1000 A(ring) to 650 K for 2000 A(ring).

Notes: The chemical coprecipitation annealing method is shown to be suitable for preparing BaFe12−2xCoxSnxO19 powders with a hexagonal fine platelet structure and a narrow particle size distribution. The proper annealing temperatures are between 800 and 900 °C. The saturation magnetization decreases slowly with increasing x; however, the coercivity decreases rapidly with increasing x. When x=0.8, the coercivity is reduced to below 1000 Oe, while the value of the saturation magnetization is near 52 emu/g. The temperature coefficient of coercivity decreases roughly from 2.6 to −1.0 Oe/°C, when x increases from 0.0 to 1.2.

Notes: A series of high yielding strength (90–180 ksi) and high-elongation (30%–45%) FeAlMnC steels have been made. The magnetic, microstructural, and thermal expansion properties of these steels have been studied. Basically, their magnetic transitions on cooling can be classified into three groups according to their microstructures: (i) For fully austenitic (γ) steels, the transition is from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic. TN is lowered with the addition of Al; (ii) for α+γ phase steel (volume fraction of α≤0.3%), the transition is from superparamagnetic to antiferromagnetic, and (iii) for the mixed phase steel, whose α phase has percolated, it is ferromagnetic with TC(approximately-equal-to)200 C. The susceptibility of austenitic steels is low. Their nonmagnetic properties are comparable to commercial 304 or 25/12 stainless steel. An Invar-like property in the thermal expansion was observed around TN. Their volume magnetostriction values are in the range of 10−6–10−5.

Notes: The variations of the grain-boundary precipitates, the electrical resistivity, and the magnetization of a Ni-8 at. % Sn alloy have been investigated as functions of annealing temperature and annealing time. For samples annealed at 773 K, the averaged growth rate of the size of the grain-boundary precipitates is roughly 0.42 μm/h for the first 24 h; the electrical resistivity at T=10 K and the magnetization at T=10 K and H=5 kG vary monotonically with respect to the annealing time for the first 2 weeks, changing from 22.5 to 7 μΩ cm for the electrical resistivity and from 27 to 33 emu/g for the magnetization. A large tail section in the magnetization versus temperature curve was also observed in the aged samples. All these electrical and magnetic variations in the Ni-8 at. % Sn samples annealed at 773 K varied monotonically with respect to the growth of the grain-boundary precipitates.

Notes: Samples of (Cu/Zn)-bonded and unbonded Sm2Fe17MxNy with M=B or C (x=0, 0.25, and 0.5; y〈3) were fabricated. All the samples, besides those with B, show single Curie temperature TC and with Sm2Fe17-type crystal structure; however, multiphase structure and double TC were observed in all the samples with B. For all the heating runs the electrical resistivity roughly above 600 K increases abruptly for all Zn-bonded samples; and decreases abruptly for all Cu-bonded samples. After these high temperature runs, the residual electrical resistivity increases for all Zn-bonded samples, and decreases for all Cu-bonded samples. The effects of Cu segregation and Zn reaction with samples are identified by the EPMA analyses.

Notes: Epitaxial Co/Cr multilayers, and single-crystal Co thin films etc. have been grown on MgO and Al2O3 substrates with Cr and Mo as buffer layers by molecular beam epitaxy technique. From the structure and magnetoresistance studies, we have found that the ferromagnetic anisotropy of resistance (AMR) is strongly influenced by the buffer layer, but with negligible effect due to the variation of the structure of Co films. The AMR of Co film on Cr buffer layer is quite small (0.1%); however, the MR of Co/Cr multilayers is almost one order larger than the AMR of Co film on Cr buffer layer. An enhancement factor of 4 for the MR in Co/Cr multilayers by the interface roughness has been observed. This suggests that the effect due to the spin dependent scattering at the interfacial regions of the superlattice is larger than that due to the spin dependent scattering in the ferromagnetic layers for the MR in the Co/Cr multilayer system.

Notes: Using an unconventional reduction method, high-pressure sintering at 6.0 GPa and about 600 °C for 20 min, we have produced high-quality n-type Ln1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y (Ln=Pr, Sm, and Eu) superconductors from the as-prepared materials. The samples show higher critical temperatures, higher superconducting phase fractions, and much lower resistances in the normal state than those synthesized by conventional methods. The increase of critical temperature in Eu1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y is most obvious with an onset temperature Tonc and zero-resistance temperature Tc0 of 28.4 and 23.3 K, respectively. High-pressure sintering seems to be effective on the modulation of the fine crystal and electronic structures of n-type systems. In particular, metallic resistance versus temperature behaviors in normal states similar to those found in single crystals and epitaxial films are observed in Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y and Eu1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y, in sharp contrast to the semiconductorlike behaviors in the conventionally prepared samples. From transmission electron microscopy studies, it is found that the compacting and regrowth of the polycrystal under high-pressure sintering greatly improves the weak links at grain boundaries.
