Notes: Nd-Fe-B powder produced by conventional methods is pyrophoric, and exhibits poor corrosion resistance. Magnets made from powder are also susceptible to corrosion. Conventional methods of production are complicated, potentially hazardous, and relatively expensive. A novel, low cost, less hazardous method of producing powder and magnets with high corrosion resistance and Curie point is discussed. Nd-Fe-B alloys are milled in water, vacuum dried, and passivated at a suitable temperature in a nitrogen or carbon dioxide medium. During passivation, a protective layer, comprised of nitride and/or carbide phases, is formed in the surface region of the powder particles. This powder is not pyrophoric, and may be stored in a laboratory air environment for an extended period of time with no loss in magnetic properties. Compacted and sintered magnets produced from this powder are also highly corrosion resistant, and exhibit a higher Curie point compared to conventionally produced magnets. A description of the novel technology, and a discussion of the properties of Nd-Fe-B-C/N powder and magnets is given.

Notes: A dual purpose pyrometer is described that allows both accurate radiance temperature measurement and fast temporal response. The system uses two silicon photodiodes with separate optical paths derived from a common spot on the sample. The optical bandwidths and response times of each detection circuit are tailored to the function of each radiometer. The radiance temperature of electromagnetically levitated metallic samples is measured over a narrow optical bandwidth with a high-gain silicon detector. The velocity of solidification of undercooled melts can be deduced from the rise time of the second silicon detector which samples a broad optical bandwidth and has a fast response time. Results from experiments on the undercooling and solidification behavior of electromagnetically levitated pure nickel show that the solidification velocity approaches 17 m/s at high undercooling.

Notes: The photoluminescence (PL) and infrared absorbance of electrochemically anodized, initially nonphotoluminescent, porous silicon samples were examined as a function of hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching time. Transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements revealed that the infrared absorbance from silicon hydrogen surface species immediately decreased with HF etching. In contrast, the PL did not appear until after HF etching times of 20–80 min, depending on initial sample porosity. Subsequently, the PL intensity increased, reached a maximum, and then progressively decreased versus HF etching time. These HF etching results demonstrate that there is no direct correlation between the PL and the silicon hydrogen surface species.

Notes: The effect of thermal annealing and surface coverage on porous silicon photoluminescence was studied in situ in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber. These investigations correlated simultaneously temperature, surface coverage, and photoluminescence intensity. The surface coverage was monitored using transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the photoluminescence could not be defined only according to the presence of SiH2 surface species. Likewise, the disappearance of the photoluminescence versus thermal annealing did not scale directly with H2 desorption from SiH2 species. The loss of photoluminescence versus thermal annealing was attributed to surface structural changes or the production of surface states which provide pathways for nonradiative recombination.

Notes: The use of ‘selectors’to control the filamentous bacteria which promote bulking in activated sludge is a well-established concept. However, their use as a control measure for stable foams is still to be optimized. This paper presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the use of selectors at three sewage-treatment works where stable foams occurred regularly. Chemical and biological data are reported together with the redox potentials in the selector zones. Taken overall, the results suggest that selectors cannot be designed or built on an ad hoc basis if the foam-producing filaments are to be controlled.

Notes: Operating experiences of the design, construction, and daily use of automation at a coastal sewage-treatment works are described. A full description of each automated item of plant is given, together with an overview of the complete scheme. Cost savings as a result of automation are assessed, and improvements in works' operation and effluent quality are outlined. Development of the original project to include an ‘expert system’ for regulating storm discharges is also given.

Notes: Summary The retinoid concentration (determined colorimetrically) did not change significantly in retinyl acetatesupplemented (6 μg/ml) Eagle's Minimal Essential Medium containing 10% fetal calf serum when stored at −20 or 4°C over 7 days. After the medium was incubated at 37°C for 48 h, 37–49% of the retinoid remained, whether or not tissue (neonatal Syrian hamster cheek pouch) was present, and irrespective of explant age. The normal retinoid level in the tissue was approximately 0.25 μg per gram. Therefore, neonatal hamster cheek pouches, incubated in medium with the addition of 6 μg of retinyl acetate per ml of medium and undergoing mucous metaplasia and some mucous gland morphogenesis, were continually being exposed to retinoid levels which, though gradually decreasing, remained well above their normal physiological level.
