Notes: Summary The relative frequency of different β-thalassemia mutations and their association with β-globin haplotypes were studied in patients from the Nile delta region, Egypt, by means of the polymerase chain reaction, oligonucleotide hybridization and restriction analysis. We found that 8 mutations account for 77% of β-thalassemia chromosomes in this population, the commonest being IVS-1 nt 110, IVS-1 nt 6 and IVS-1 nt 1. Each mutation was associated with a specific haplotype, with the exception of IVS-1 nt 110, found on 3 different chromosomal backgrounds. Our data show that testing for the 8 detectable mutations makes feasible prenatal diagnosis in 65% of at risk couples and exclusion testing in an additional 25% of cases.

Notes: Abstract Venous pulsations are thought, but to our knowledge have never been demonstrated, to result in underestimation of oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry (Spo 2); however, to our knowledge, this has never been demonstrated. A patient with ischemic cardiomyopathy requiring intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABC) had to withstand a temporary cessation of IABC (period I), during which she had marked central venous pulsations and a pulse oximeter bias of −18%. After IABC was reinstituted (period II), the venous pulsations disappeared and the bias was reduced to 0%. Cardiac output, systemic vascular resistance, and temperature during both periods were comparable. Pulmonary vascular resistance, however, was much lower during period II. We postulate that the bias was caused by venous pulsations significantly contributing to the AC, or variable component, of light absorption.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurde die Herstellung und Isolierung von Anisaldehyd-G-T-Komplexen von Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II) und Cu(II) der allgemeinen Formel [MCl2(AGT)2]Cl2 oder [MCl2(AGT)]Cl durchgeführt, wobei (AGT)=Anisaldehydcarbohydrazon-methyl-trimethyl-ammoniumkation H3C-O-C6H4-CH=N-NHCOCH2N+-(CH3)3 undM=Mn(II), Co(II), oder Fe(III) und Cu(II).
Notes: Abstract Anisaldehyde Girard T complexes of Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II) and Cu(II) with the general formula [MCl2(AGT)2]Cl2 or [MCl2(AGT)]Cl, where (AGT)=anisaldehyde carbohydrazone methyltrimethylammonium cation, H3C-O-C6H4-CH=N-NHCOCH2N+-(CH3)3 andM=Mn(II), Co(II), Fe(III) or Cu(II) were prepared. Elemental analysis, electrical conductance and IR spectra showed that the ligand coordinates with the studied metals in keto form through the azomethine and carbonyl groups. The molar conductances, electronic spectra and magnetic moments of the solid complexes were determined. The processes of thermal decomposition of these complexes were studied. From the analysis of the thermal decomposition curves obtained, the corresponding kinetic parametersn, E a and logA were evaluated by two different methods and the effects of the central metal ions on the stabilities of the complexes are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Adsorption of some fission product elements on sephadex was attained at pH 5.5±0.2. Individual separation of adsorbed radioactive cerium, uranium and plutonium on sephadex was performed using 25 ml of 10−4M triethylenetetraaminehexaacetic acid (TTHA) at different pH values.

Notes: Abstract A simple, economic and specific radiochemical method for the determination of americium in urine and other biological materials is given. The urine sample is heated in nitric acid to break down any organic complexes of actinides. Insoluble phosphates are precipitated and changed to carbonates. The carbonate solution is passed through a diglycol succinate column and americium is eluted by hydrochloric acid. The eluate is evaporated to prepare a source for counting. The proposed procedure produces high overall yield and the sensitivity of the method is about 0.74 mBq (0.02 pCi). Determination of americium in the presence of other α-emitters in urine is also given.

Notes: A velocity-vorticity formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is presented as an alternative to the primitive variables approach. The velocity components and the vorticity are solved for in a fully coupled manner using a Newton method. No artificial viscosity is required in this formulation. The pressure is updated by a method allowing natural imposition of boundary conditions. Incompressible and subsonic results are presented for two-dimensional laminar internal flows up to high Reynolds numbers.

Notes: A method is outlined for solving two-dimensional transonic viscous flow problems, in which the velocity vector is split into the gradient of a potential and a rotational component. The approach takes advantage of the fact that for high-Reynolds-number flows the viscous terms of the Navier-Stokes equations are important only in a thin shear layer and therefore solution of the full equations may not be needed everywhere. Most of the flow can be considered inviscid and, neglecting the entropy and vorticity effects, a potential model is a good approximation in the flow core. The rotational part of the flow can then be calculated by solution of the potential, streamfunction and vorticity transport equations. Implementation of the no-slip and no-penetration boundary conditions at the walls provides a simple mechanism for the interaction between the viscous and inviscid solutions and no extra coupling procedures are needed. Results are presented for turbulent transonic internal choked flows.

Notes: Finite element solutions of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are presented, using a simple dissipation model. The discretization is based on the weak-Galerkin weighted residual method and equal interpolation functions for all the unknowns are permitted. The nonlinearity is iterated upon using a Newton method and at each iteration the linear algebraic system is solved by a direct solver with all unknowns fully coupled. Results are presented for two-dimensional transonic inviscid flows and two- and three-dimensional incompressible viscous flows. Convergence of the algorithm is shown to be quadratic, reaching machine accuracy in very few iterations. The inviscid results demonstrate the existence of nonunique numerical solutions to the steady Euler equations.
