Description: The European Retrieval Carrier (EURECA) was launched on its first flight on the 31st July 1992 by the Space Shuttle Atlantis. EURECA is characterized by several new on-board features, most notable Packet Telemetry and a partial implementation of Packet Telecommanding using an early version of the Command Operation Procedure (COP-1) protocol. EURECA has also very low contact time with its Ground Station, with a consequent high number of out-of-visibility onboard operations. This paper concentrates on the implementation and operational experience with the COP-1 Protocol and the effect the short ground contact time has on the design of the Commanding System. Another interesting feature is that the COP-1 is implemented at the control center rather than at the ground station. The COP-1 protocol also successfully supported the mission during the launch where commands were sent via NASCOM and the Shuttle.

Description: Parameterizations of double nucleon removal from the electromagnetic and strong interactions of cosmic rays with nuclei are presented. These parameterizations are an extension of previous single nucleon removal parameterizations and combined they represent the dominant part of the electromagnetic dissociation encountered by a cosmic ray on its traversal through matter. Such parameterizations should be very useful in studying cosmic-ray transport through the interstellar medium, the Earth's atmosphere, spacecraft walls, and extraterrestrial matter.

Description: The Neogene Bolboforma zones established in the North Atlantic have been correlated with the calcareous nannoplankton stratigraphy obtained by investigation of the same samples from DSDP Sites 12–116 (44 samples), 49–408 (76 samples), 81–555 (43 samples) and 94–608 (103 samples). The absolute ages for the zonal boundaries were determined by the paleomagmetic record of Site 94–608. This correlation and the age determinations are additional useful tools to develop a precise biostratigraphy of Neogene sediments in the Northern Atlantic.
