    Description: Bolometer observations at 250 GHz of fifteen minor planets have shown that the emissivity of these objects is close to unity. This results in an independent method to determine the absolute calibration scale of radio observations at mm wavelengths: Applying our results to Mars, the prime calibrator at this wavelength, gives a mean absolute disk temperature at mean solar distance of approximately 210 K. Further, the diameters of circularly symmetric asteroids can be determined or the surface area of asteroids can be estimated assuming some geometric constraints on their shape.

    Description: The long-period variable Mira Omicron Ceti has been observed at 800 nm wavelength with the Mk III Optical Interferometer at photometric phases 0 = 0.96, 0.05, and 0.14 in 1990; some additional data were taken in 1989. The star is not spherically symmetric, and temporal variations of the size and the position angle of the asymmetry are detected. The visibility data can be represented by two uniform elliptical disks, which could correspond to different layers in Mira's atmosphere. If the size variations are interpreted in terms of physical motion of the emitting material, an infall velocity of about 15 km/s around phi = 0 is derived.

    Description: Seventy-seven extragalactic radio sources north of -2 deg declination have been observed using Mark III VLBI during 13 experiments from 1988 October to 1989 November. Radio positions derived from these observations supplement an ongoing project to define and maintain an all-sky radio/optical reference frame of 400 or more extragalactic sources with milliarcsecond (mas) accurate radio and optical positions. Positions for 11 new sources are presented along with improved positions for 54 sources already in the reference-frame catalog. An additional five sources have been determined to be unsuitable reference-frame objects. Observations of seven calibration sources tie the new positions to the existing catalog. The radio positions of the new sources have formal mean errors of about 0.7 mas in each coordinate. Sources for which improved positions are reported now have formal errors not greater than 1 mas, an improvement in some cases by as much as 85 percent. The complementary optical program is addressed briefly.

    Description: The orbit of the double-lined spectroscopic binary Phi Cygni, the distance to the system, and the masses and absolute magnitudes of its components are presented via measurements with the Mar III Optical Interferometer. On the basis of a reexamination of the spectroscopic data of Rach & Herbig (1961), the values and uncertainties are adopted for the period and the projected semimajor axes from the present fit to the spectroscopic data and the values of the remaining elements from the present fit to the Mark III data. The elements of the true orbit are derived, and the masses and absolute magnitudes of the components, and the distance to the system are calculated.

    Description: The apparent orbit of the double-lined spectroscopic binary Alpha Equulei was measured using observations, from June 13, 1989 to September 15, 1990, with the Mark III Optical Interferometer. The results, combined with the spectroscopic results of Rosvick and Scarfe (1991), were used to obtain estimates of the masses of the components, their absolute magnitudes, and the distance to the system. In addition, the magnitude differences between the components were determined at four wavelengths; these were combined with the colors reported by Stickland (1976) to derive colors for the two Alpha Equulei components and to estimate their spectral types.

    Description: Angular diameters determined with the Mark III Optical Interferometer are presented for 12 stars at wavelengths of 450 and 800 nm. The uniform disk diameters resulting from fits to the visibility observations have rms residuals of order 1 percent for the 800 nm measurements and less than 3 percent for the 450 nm measurements. The improvement over previous observations with this instrument is due to improved data analysis and the use of a wider range of baseline lengths. An analysis of the calibration systematics for the Mark III Optical Interferometer is included. There is good agreement between these measurements and previously published data. The changes in uniform disk diameter between wavelengths of 450 and 800 nm agree with models of stellar atmospheres.

    Description: Observations from 600 Mark III VLBI experiments from 1979 to 1988, resulting in 237,681 acceptable pairs of group delay and phase delay rate observations, have been used to derive positions of 182 extragalactic radio sources with typical formal standard errors less than 1 mas. The sources are distributed fairly evenly above delta = -30 deg, and 70 sources have delta greater than 0 deg. Analysis with different troposphere models, as well as internal and external comparisons, indicates that a coordinate frame defined by this set of radio sources should be reliable at the 1 mas level. The right ascension zero point of this reference frame has been aligned with the FK5 by using the optical positions of 28 extragalactic radio sources whose positions are on the FK5 system. Because of known defects in the knowledge of astronomical constants, daily nutation offsets in longitude and obliquity were determined relative to an arbitrary reference day in the set of experiments.

    Description: Radio and optical positions for northern hemisphere extragalactic sources are reported. Milliarcsecond (mas) accurate radio positions of 106 sources north of -2 deg declination are derived from Mark III Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations taken during ten experiments from 1990 January through 1990 October. The results presented supplement an ongoing project to define and maintain an all-sky radio/optical reference frame of 400 or more extragalactic sources with mas accurate radio and optical positions. Radio positions for 34 new sources are presented along with improved radio positions for 72 sources already in the reference frame catalog. An additional nine sources have been determined to be unsuitable reference frame objects. Radio observations of nine calibration sources tie the new positions to the existing catalogue. The radio positions of the new sources have formal mean errors of approximately 0.7 mas in right ascension and approximately 1.0 mas in declination. Sources for which we report improved radio positions now have formal mean errors of approximately 0.5 mas in both coordinates, an improvement in some cases by as much as 75%. Positions in the FK5 system have also been obtained for the optical counterparts of an additional five northern hemisphere radio sources using prime focus plates from the Kitt Peak National Observatory's 4 m telescope and a Ritchey-Chretien focus plate from the Calar Alto 2.2 m telescope. The optical positions have internal accuracies of about 0.03 sec and differ from the radio positions by about 0.07 sec on the average.

    Description: We report new accurate radio position measurements for 30 sources, preliminary positions for two sources, improved radio postions for nine additional sources which had limited previous observations, and optical positions and optical-radio differences for six of the radio sources. The Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations are part of the continuing effort to establish a global radio reference frame of about 400 compact, flat spectrum sources, which are evenly distributed across the sky. The observations were made using Mark III data format in four separate sessions in 1988-89 with radio telescopes at Tidbinbilla, Australia, Kauai, USA, and Kashima, Japan. We observed a total of 54 sources, including ten calibrators and three which were undetected. The 32 new source positions bring the total number in the radio reference frame catalog to 319 (172 northern and 147 southern) and fill in the zone -25 deg greater than delta greater than -45 deg which, prior to this list, had the lowest source density. The VLBI positions have an average formal precision of less than 1 mas, although unknown radio structure effects of about 1-2 mas may be present. The six new optical postion measurements are part of the program to obtain positions of the optical counterparts of the radio reference frame source and to map accurately the optical on to the radio reference frames. The optical measurements were obtained from United States Naval Observatory (USNO) Black Birch astrograph plates and source plates from the AAT, and Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) 4 m, and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Schmidt. The optical positions have an average precision of 0.07 sec, mostly due to the zero point error when adjusted to the FK5 optical frame using the IRS catalog. To date we have measured optical positions for 46 sources.

    Description: Radio and optical positions are presented for southern hemisphere extragalactic sources from the Parkes 2.7 GHz survey. Sixty-one sources were observed with Mark III VLBI at 8.4 GHz between Tidbinbilla, Australia, and Hartebeesthoek, South Africa. The results presented are part of the effort to establish a global reference frame of 400 extragalactic radio sources. Radio positions with about 10 milliarcsec errors have been estimated for 39 sources not previously in the present radio reference frame catalog, and provisional positions were obtained for two additional sources, bringing the total number of catalog sources to 276. The principal source of error is the uncalibrated ionosphere. Of the remaining sources five were completely undetected, six were either too faint or too resolved, and nine had previous catalog positions. Optical positions on the FK5 system have also been measured for four southern sources using prime focus plates from the Anglo-Australian 4 m telescope with an accuracy of 0.06 arcsec. This raises to 40 the number of radio sources with accurately measured positions for their optical counterparts.
