    Description: Two hours after treatment with beta-bungarotoxin (0.34-0.4 microM), when there was complete neuromuscular block, the peak contracture response to 50 microM succinylcholine was significantly reduced by about 35% in the mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation. Additionally, significant phospholipase A2 activity was detected on primary cell cultures from skeletal muscle which were incubated for 2 hr with concentrations of beta-bungarotoxin greater than or equal to 0.1 microM. Thus, beta-bungarotoxin appears to have pharmacologically and biochemically detectable postsynaptic actions in mammalian muscle systems.

    Description: Multiobject spectroscopy results of HII regions in nearby late-type spiral galaxies are given. Results include excitation measurements, log ((O III)/H beta), for 81 regions in M 101, 30 regions in NGC 2403, and 13 regions in M 51. Researchers conclude that late-type spirals can be classified into two distinct populations, examine possible causes of this division, and derive metallicity gradients for these galaxies. M 51 appears to have an anomalously shallow abundance gradient.

    Description: We have amassed a large sample of velocity data for the cluster of galaxies Abell 2634 which contains the wide-angle tail (WAT) radio source 3C 465. Robust indicators of location and scale and their confidence intervals are used to determine if the cD galaxy, containing the WAT, has a significant peculiar motion. We find a cD peculiar radial velocity of 219 plus or minus 98 km s(exp -1). Further dynamical analyses, including substructure and normality tests, suggest that A 2634 is an unrelaxed cluster whose radio source structure may be bent by the turbulent gas of a recent cluster-subcluster merger.

    Description: Direct numerical simulations of a single-step irreversible chemical reaction with non-premixed reactants in forced isotropic turbulence at R(sub lambda) = 63, Da = 4.0, and Sc = 0.7 were made using 128 Fourier modes to obtain joint probability density functions (pdfs) and other statistical information to parameterize and test a Fokker-Planck turbulent mixing model. Preliminary results indicate that the modeled gradient stretching term for an inert scalar is independent of the initial conditions of the scalar field. The conditional pdf of scalar gradient magnitudes is found to be a function of the scalar until the reaction is largely completed. Alignment of concentration gradients with local strain rate and other features of the flow were also investigated.

    Description: Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) images are presented for a 40' field at the southwest end of the SMC centered near the H alpha emission object Henize 19. Photometry is obtained for 1309 stars common to the FUV (lambda (sub eff) = 1620 A) and NUV (lambda (sub eff) = 2490 A) images. We use UIT photometry and imagery to derive a UV color-magnitude diagram for hot field stars; confirm the consistency of low-metal-abundance stellar evolutionary models with the observations; study dust distribution in the field, finding an increase in E(B--V) from the northeast to the southwest; confirm for a large number of stars an extinction curve, like that derived by Hutchings for the SMC, which rises steeply from NUV to FUV; and derive a mass function for SMC field stars and its lack of dependence on assumed extinction curve characteristics. The mass function has a slope within the accepted range (Gamma = -1.7 +/- 0.5) over a wide range of assumed extinction parameters, including variations of the size (+/- approximately 1.5 mag x E(B--V) in the FUV) seen in the Galaxy.
