Description: A commercial fluid mechanics program, FLUENT, has been applied to the modeling of a hot-filament diamond deposition reactor. Streamlines and contours of constant temperature and species concentrations are obtained for practical reactor geometries and conditions. The modeling is presently restricted to two-dimensional simulations and to a chemical mechanism of ten independent homogeneous and surface reactions. Comparisons are made between predicted power consumption, substrate temperature, and concentrations of atomic hydrogen and methyl-radical with values taken from the literature. The results to date indicate that the modeling can aid in the rational design and analysis of practical reactor configurations.

Description: Complete power systems capable of delivering 75 kW of continuous power in low earth orbit have been compared. Performance, liabilities, and advantages are discussed for a shielded nuclear system, a solar dynamic system, and photovoltaic systems, both current Freedom Si design and near-term GaAs/Ge with NaS storage. System components include power generation, storage (if required), heat rejection, power conversion and distribution, structural support, and shielding (if required). Performance parameters indicate the substantial advantage of the GaAs/Ge photovoltaic system, which does not require altering the support structure of the current Freedom design.

Description: A linear nonhydrostatic spectral model is run with the basic state, or large scale, vertical profiles of temperature and wind observed prior to convective development along the northern coast of South America during the GTE/ABLE 2B. The model produces unstable modes with mesoscale wavelength and propagation speed comparable to observed Amazonian squall lines. Several tests with different vertical profiles of low-level winds lead to the conclusion that a shallow and/or weak low-level jet either does not produce a scale selection or, if it does, the selected mode is stationary, indicating the absence of a propagating disturbance. A 700-mbar jet of 13 m/s, with a 600-mbar wind speed greater or equal to 10 m/s, is enough to produce unstable modes with propagating features resembling those of observed Amazonian squall lines. However, a deep layer of moderate winds (about 10 m/s) may produce similar results even in the absence of a low-level wind maximum. The implications in terms of short-term weather forecasting are discussed.
