    Notes: The permeability of oxygen through horizontally oriented multibilayer films of polyion complexes prepared from quaternary ammonium-type surfactants [CH3(CH2)n-1]2N+(CH3)2Br-(n = 14, 16, 18), and poly(p-styrenesulfonate) or poly[2-(acrylamido)-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate], was measured in water using an oxygen electrode. The permeability depended mainly on the phase of the multibilayers. Thus, it increased abruptly (about 10-fold) near each phase transition temperature because of the fluidity enhancement of the multibilayer. Inverted hexagonal type nonbilayer films prepared from the polyion complexes and cholesterol had greater permeability (2-20-fold) than the multibilayer films in both phases. The large permeability of the nonbilayer films was attributed to the lack of a barrier such as the bilayer and lower crystallinity of the films. It was associated neither with an increase in thermal movement of the lipid surfactant molecules nor with an increase in the water content of the films by the addition of cholesterol. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Structural changes of native and regenerated silk fibroin membranes were induced by immersion in water-methanol solutions and examined as a function of immersion time and methanol concentration. X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy data showed that transition from random coil to β-sheet structure occurred favorably when both native and regenerated silk fibroin membranes were immersed in water-methanol solutions, regardless of the different immersion time. Only native silk membrane, treated for 2 min with pure methanol, maintained its original amorphous structure, as demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) curves. The degree of displacement, measured by thermomechanical analysis (TMA), was much greater for regenerated than for native silk fibroin membranes. SDS-PAGE pattern showed that native silk fibroin has a molecular weight of 350, while the regenerated sample is formed by a large number of polypeptides in the range of 200-50 KD. The amount of acidic and basic amino acids decreased slightly in regenerated silk fibroin. Physical properties of silk membranes treated with water-methanol solutions are discussed in terms of membrane structure, treatment conditions, and chemical structure of starting material. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: This article deals with the preparation and morphological characterization of porous materials obtained by freezing and lyophilizing silk fibroin solutions. When an aqueous silk solution is frozen at different temperatures (-18, -45, and -80°C), the average pore size decreases with lowering of the freezing temperature. Silk fibroin aggregates obtained in these conditions exhibit a sheetlike structure. By lowering the pH from neutrality to 4.01 and 2.65, the morphology of the solid phase changes from a sheet to a fiber structure. The average pore size is smaller at pH 4.01 than is the former value corresponding to the isoelectric point of silk fibroin. The addition of different amounts of methanol to the silk solution results in a sharp fall of the average pore size and hardens the material, as a consequence of the high packing density of the fibroin molecules. Silk fibroin aggregates prepared in these conditions exhibit a typical fibrous structure. A drug-delivery system was prepared by incorporating acetylsalicyclic acid into a porous silk fibroin carrier, and the kinetics of the drug release was studied. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The physicochemical changes of silk fibers irradiated with γ-rays was studied in relation to the amount of absorbed does in the range 0-21 Mrad. The yellowing index (b/L) suddenly increased at low dose for both raw and degummed silk fibers. An equilibrium value was attained from 10 Mrad upward. The tensile properties were significantly affected by exposure to γ-rays. Both strength and elongation at break decreased at almost the same rate and extent, attaining a final value that was one-half of the untreated control. The birefringence and isotropic refractive index of exposed silk fibers decreased, the effect being larger in the low dose range, suggesting a decrease of crystallinity and molecular orientation. X-ray diffraction curves, however, demonstrated that the crystalline structure remained unchanged even after exposure of the highest γ-ray dose. The thermal behavior evaluated by DSC and TMA measurements showed that the γ-irradiation induced a slight decrease of thermal stability in irradiated silk fibers, this effect being detectable only at 21 Mrad of the absorbed dose. The dynamic viscoelastic behavior suggested that the thermal movement of the fibroin molecules in the amorphous and crystalline regions increased with increasing absorbed dose, attributing to the physicochemical modifications induced by the ionizing radiations. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A cationic, high-water-content hydrogel membrane composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(allylbiguanido-co-allylamine) hydrochloride (PAB) with positively charged biguanido groups that resemble arginine residues was developed. The PAB was prepared by reacting poly(allylamine) hydrochloride (PAA) with guanyl-O-methyl isourea. PAB/PVA hydrogel membranes were prepared by repeated freezing and thawing. For comparison, hydrogel membranes composed of PAA and PVA were also prepared. The interaction between these hydrogel membranes and mouse fibroblast (L929) was studied by a cell culture method. The PAB hydrogel blend had a relatively low percentage of initial cell attachment. The cell growth on the PAB hydrogel membranes showed a maximum at 5 mol % PAB content that was as high as commercially available plastic films. However, cells on hydrogel membranes with 50 mol % PAB content and 0 mol % PAB content (only PVA) did not seem to grow; neither did the 5/95 PAA/PVA membranes. Water contact angles of hydrogel membranes did not vary with the PAB content. Morphology of the cell attachment was observed by SEM. On the PAB blend hydrogel surfaces, cells were not spindle-shaped and monolayers, but rather cells aggregated in spherical clusters. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
