    Notes: Abstract Concentrations of ions were measured in soil solutions from beech (Nothofagus) forests in remote areas of New Zealand and in solutions from beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) forests in North-East Bavaria, West Germany, to compare the chemistry of soil solutions which are unaffected by acid deposition (New Zealand) with those that are affected (West Germany). In New Zealand, soil solution SO4 2− concentrations ranged between 〈2 and 58 μmol L−1, and NO3 − concentrations ranged between 〈1 and 3 μmol L−1. In West Germany, SO4 2− concentrations ranged between 80 and 700 μmol L−1, and NO3 − concentrations at three of six sites ranged between 39 and 3750 μmol L−1, but was not detected at the remaining three sites. At all sites in New Zealand, and at sites where the soil base status was moderately high in West Germany, pH levels increased, and total Al (Alt) and inorganic monomeric Al (Ali) levels decreased rapidly with increasing soil depth. In contrast, at sites on soils of low base status in West Germany, pH levels increased only slightly, and Al levels did not decline with increasing soil depth. Under a high-elevation Norway spruce stand showing severe Mg deficiency and dieback symptoms in West Germany, soil solution Mg2+ levels ranged between 20 and 60 μmol L−, and were only half those under a healthy stand. Alt and Ali levels were substantially higher the healthy stand than under the unhealthy stand, indicating that Al toxicity was not the main cause of spruce decline.

    Notes: The solution of the stream function-vorticity equations is developed using a multigrid method to improve efficiency in a finite-element p-method. The equations are discretized using 2-D Lagrange finite elements (linear, quadratic and cubic) and solved in iteratively decoupled form using successive approximation and continuation methods. The comparative performance of several multigrid and direct matrix solvers is investigated with respect to convergence characteristics and time performance on the Cray Y-MP.

    Description: Measurements of millimeter-wave surface resistance versus temperature have been performed for YBa2Cu3O(x) thin films on 100 line-type SrTiO(3) substrates using a TE(011) cylindrical copper cavity at 80 GHz. The 0.6-micron thick films were grown at several deposition temperatures in the range 690 C to 810 C by means of a pulsed excimer laser ablation technique. A surface resistance minimum (60 milliohm at 77 K) near 770 C is shown to correlate with a minimum in c-axis lattice parameter (11.72 A). The highest value of Tc also occurs near this temperature. The surface resistance of films deposited at 790 C on 110 line-type LaAlO3 subtrates is lower, reaching 8 milliohm at 98 GHz and 80 K, demonstrating the influence of substate material on film quality.

    Description: The paper describes thin films deposited in a system where substrates are scanned over areas up to 3.5 x 3.5 cm through the stationary plume of an ablated material defined by an aperture. These YBCO films are deposited on LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates with the thickness of 90 and 160 nm. Attention is focused on the main features of the deposition system: line focusing of the laser beam on the target; an aperture defining the area of the plume; computerized stepper motor-driven X-Y stage translating the heated sampler holder behind the plume-defining aperture in programmed patterns; and substrate mounting block with uniform heating at high temperatures over large areas. It is noted that the high degree of uniformity of the properties in each film batch illustrates that the technique of pulsed laser deposition can be applied to produce large YBCO films of high quality.
