X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry have been used to characterize 4.9 wt.% platinum-on-graphite catalysts used for the oxidation with molecular oxygen of methyl α-D-glucoside in aqueous solution. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that a surface oxidic layer is formed on the platinum particles upon exposure to ambient air. This oxidation could not be confirmed by XPS, however. The oxidation of methyl α-D-glucoside in the liquid phase is accompanied by growth of the platinum particles. Open-circuit potential measurements indicated an increasing oxygen coverage of the platinum surface during reaction.
