Notes: Acyclic dience metathesis (ADMET) depolymerization of functionalized furan-based polymers prepared via aqueous ring-opening polymerization of 7-oxanobornenes has been investigated. Results indicate that while very high molecular weight poly [exo-N-methyl-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2,5-diene-2,3-dicarboximide] can be depolymerized to oligomers with ease, poly [2,3-dicarbomethoxy-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2,5-diene] is more resistant to depolymerization under similar conditions. This difference may be due to differential interaction of the carbonyls in the side chains with the metal atom of the catalyst in the proposed metallacyclobutane intermediate. ADMET depolymerization of poly [2,3-bis (trifluoromethyl)-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2,5-diene] was feasible, however, the extent of depolymerization was decreased due to the use of a coordinating solvent (THF) used during the depolymerization process. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The products resulting from the propoxylation of sucrose and lactose under alkaline conditions have been studied using FAB mass spectrometry. Soft desorption/ionization, using fast atoms, was expected to show intense protonated molecules for each component of the reaction mixture, thus allowing the extent of propoxylation to be examined under various conditions. However, it appears that addition of the FAB matrix, namely thioglycerol, prior to mass spectral analysis, resulted in alteration of the analyte via hydrolysis/dehydration, with protonated molecules appearing only for matrix/analyte reaction products, and not the original compounds which were to be examined. The resulting mass spectra, however, provided information regarding the extent of propoxylation and were consistent with results obtained by other researchers examining acetylated sugars using CI-MS.

Notes: The aqueous ring-opening metathesis polymerization of the exo-Diels-Alder adduct of furan and maleimide was accomplished using an “activated Ruthenium” catalyst present in the supernatant of a RuCl3-catalyzed aqueous polymerization of furan-dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate adduct. The polymer was characterized by solution 1H- and 13C-NMR, IR, DSC, and viscometry. Characterization revealed an intact imide group and the possibility of high-temperature applications. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) was solution blended with poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA) in various proportions. Compatibility in these blend systems was analyzed using ultrasound. The ultrasound velocity and attenuation results show that the two polymers formed a compatible blend. Viscosity and other derived parameters like free volume and internal pressure of the blends show that PAN form into an ideal blend with PnBMA in the compositions of 60 : 40 and 40 : 60. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The propoxylation of lactose (a dairy waste by-product), under basic conditions, yields polyether polyols that have been found to be a good substitute for sucrose polyether polyols currently used in the rigid polyurethane foam industry. 13C-NMR analysis of polyethers of sugars indicate that while the disaccharide α (1 → 2′) linkage of sucrose remains intact during propoxylation, that of lactose breaks, giving polyethers of monosaccharides. In addition, IR spectra reveal the absence of unsaturation in the product. The presence of multiplicities of the different carbon peaks of propylene oxide in the NMR spectrum of the product implies a regioselective attack on the C-1 or C-2 of propylene oxide by the incoming nucleophile.

Notes: Homo- and copolymers of the Diels-Alder adduct of furan with maleic anhydride (F-MA) and of furan with dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate (F-DMAD) were synthesized by aqueous ring-opening metathesis polymerization and characterized by IR, NMR, and DSC. Microstructural product analyses by 13C-NMR indicated the copolymer composition to be 50 : 50 of each of the monomers when an equimolar mixture of RuCl3 and K2RuCl5, was used as the catalyst, with the cis-form predominant for poly(F-MA) and the trans-form predominant for poly(F-DMAD). On the practical side, the acidic and ester functionality of the copolymer would lend itself to be both blendable (and selectively extractable) with some already existing petroleum-based acrylate polymers. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Self-reinforced sheets (prepregs) have been prepared by stretching extruded sheets made of thermoplastic (TP) and a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) blend. The sheets are formed by extrusion through a coathanger die, device. Processing at this stage is done at a temperature at which both components in the blend are melt processable. These prepregs are laid up in multi-layers in a direction parallel to the stretching direction or in the direction of 45° with respect to each previous layer. The lay-ups are compression molded into unidirectional or isotropic laminates at temperatures below the melt processing temperature of the LCP. Various pairs of TP and LCP have been studied. These include polypropylene and an LCP based on p-oxybenzoyl, terephthaloyl and hydroquinone moieties, polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and polystyrene/PPO alloy and a LCP based on 6-oxy-2-naphthoyl and p-oxybenzoyl moieties. Mechanical properties of the prepregs and laminates were measured and compared with those obtained from injection molded samples. Surprisingly, tensile strength and modulus of isotropic laminates are found to be higher than those of injection molded samples in the flow direction. Morphlogical studies of the prepregs and laminates indicate the presence of well-defined LCP fibers in various thermoplastic matrices.
