Notes: A series of copolyesters was prepared by the melt reaction of a mixture of n-octylhydroquinone and resorcinol in varying ratios with 1,4-bis(4-chloroformylphenoxy)butane. Resorcinol was used as a comonomer to study the effect of a nonmesogenic structural unit on the thermotropic properties of a main chain liquid crystalline polyester with a flexible spacer. The effect of a tetramethylene spacer was compared with that of a longer, decamethylene spacer, which was included in similar copolyesters reported earlier by us. The inclusion of resorcinol units in increasing amounts destroyed the ability of the copolyesters to crystallize, as expected, and the copolymer containing as low as 20 mol % resorcinol showed no melting transition on analysis by differential thermal analysis (DSC). In contrast, the ability to form a liquid crystalline phase persisted until at least 40 mol % resorcinol was present. As expected, the isotropization temperature and the enthalpy and entropy changes for isotropization decreased with increasing non-mesogenic comonomer content.

Notes: Fluidized bed drying finds important applications in the chemical industry on account of the following advantages: (a) rapid exchange of heat and mass between drying media and particles yields the desired product quality and reduces the overall drying time and (b) easy handling of feed and product. There is much scope for improving the existing modelling techniques as applied to predicting the performance characteristics of the dryers. This should provide a sound basis for the implementation of appropriate control strategies. This report is a review of prevailing modelling, identification techniques and control strategies. Hopefully, the up to date information in this paper will be found useful for research work on fluidized bed dryIng.

Notes: An analytical procedure, developed to simulate the graphic method for the design of vessels subjected to external pressure or vacuum, suggested by the ASME Code, Section VIII, Division 1, is presented in this contribution. A comprehensive computer program based on this method is also presented. The program also covers the design of stiffener rings. The procedure can be easily extended to include other international standards such as the British and German codes, since the method is based on the concept of the number of lobes at collapse. The method produced reproducible results over the entire range of L/D0 and D0/t ratios of the code. The deviation observed at any point in this range is less than 0.5% for factor A. The variation in allowable pressure is less than 2%.

Notes: Based on the equation for entrainment of a turbulent free jet, a simple method of designing gas and gas-liquid injectors is presented. Using the formula for mass flow ratio of an injector consisting of a nozzle and a short cylindrical mixing tube open at both ends, a general equation for designing any injector with variable geometry and flow resistances is given. The optimization procedure is outlined. Compared to the conventional design of injectors, starting from macroscopic mass and momentum balances, the present method is much simpler, easily applicable and involves only one empirical entrainment coefficient. It is particularly advantageous in the case of variable density of the motive and entrained fluids since the density ratio appears explicitly in the relevant equations.

Notes: Aryl sulfotransferase IV catalyzes the 3′-phosphoadenosine-5′-phosphosulfate (PAPS)-dependent formation of sulfuric acid esters of benzylic alcohols. Since the benzylic carbon bearing the hydroxyl group can be asymmetric, the possibility of stereochemical control of substrate specificity of the sulfotransferase was investigated with benzylic alcohols. Benzylic alcohols of known stereochemistry were examined as potential substrates and inhibitors for the homogeneous enzyme purified from rat liver. For 1-phenylethanol, both the (+)-(R)-and (-)-(S)-enantiomers were substrates for the enzyme, and the kcat/Km value for the (-)-(S)-enantiomer was twice that of the (+)-(R)-enantiomer. The enzyme displayed an absolute stereospecificity with ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, and with 2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propanol; that is, only (-)-(1R,2S)-ephedrine, (-)-(1R,2R)-pseudoephedrine, and (-)-(S)-2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propanol were substrates for the sulfotransferase. In the case of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthol, only the (-)-(R)-enantiomer was a substrate for the enzyme. Both (+)-(R)-2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propanol and (+)-(S)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthol were competitive inhibitors of the aryl sulfotransferase-catalyzed sulfation of 1-naphthalenemethanol. Thus, the configuration of the benzylic carbon bearing the hydroxyl group determined whether these benzylic alcohols were substrates or inhibitors of the rat hepatic aryl sulfotransferase IV. Furthermore, benzylic alcohols such as (+)-(S)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthol represent a new class of inhibitors for the aryl sulfotransferase.

Notes: Runaway behaviour of exothermic reactions in a batch reactor has been studied experimentally on the example of acetic anhydride hydrolysis catalyzed by sulphuric acid, in a 700 ml batch reactor. High parametric senstivities of peak reactor temperature with respect to initial reactor temperature and catalyst concentration were obtained.

Notes: Runaway behaviour of an exothermic reaction in a semibatch reactor was studied experimentally on the example of hydrolysis of acetic anhydride catalyzed by sulphuric acid, in a 700 cm3 thinwalled stainless steel stirred reactor, 10.2 cm in diameter and 13.0 cm high. The reactor was partially immersed, to a depth of 2.1 cm, in a thermostatic bath, in order to obtain sufficiently rapid cooling of its contents. A reaction run was performed by first introducing water, acetic acid and sulphuric acid into the reactor. After the contents attained bath temperature, acetic anhydride at room temperature was fed to the reactor for a fixed time period, at a constant flow rate. When water was present in excess of the stoichiometric requirement and addition of acetic anhydride completed before the reactor attained peak temperature, the system showed sensitivity to coolant temperature and sulphuric acid concentration. When the reactants were present in stoichiometric quantities and addition of acetic anhydride was completed after the reactor attained peak temperature, the system did not exhibit any significant parametric sensitivity.

Notes: Two diamines with potential non-linear optical characteristics, (E)-4, 4′-[[[2-(4-pyridinyl)ethenyl]phenyl]methylene]bis[benzenamine] (2a) and (E)-4, 4′-[[[2-(4-pyridinyl)ethenyl]phenyl]methylene]bis [N-ethylbenzenamine] (2b), were condensed with dianhydrides, benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride and pyromellitic dianhydride, to obtain polyamic acids. These polyamic acids were soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as dimethyl formamide and dimethyl acetamide, and could be cast into transparent, tough and flexible films, which on cyclodehydration yield amorphous thermally stable polyimides. Characterisation using IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry are reported.

Notes: Cellulose acetate-butyrate films of thickness 5μm were grown by a solution growth technique. Thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDCs) were studied on these films as a function of polarizing field strength and polarizing temperature at a constant heating rate. In the present study, the TSDC spectra consist of a single current maximum, which was found to be independent of polarizing field strength. However, the current maximum shifted to higher temperatures with increasing polarizing temperature. The activation energies, relaxation parameters, charge associated with the current maximum and equivalent frequencies were evaluated. Based on these results, the origin of the TSDC was attributed to space charge polarization with some contribution arising from dipolar orientation.
