Notes: Fermentation of xylose by Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum was studied in batch and continuous culture in which the limiting nutrient was either xylose, phosphate, or ammonia. Transient results obtained in continuous cultures with batch grown inoculum and progressively higher feed substrate concentrations exhibited ethanol selectivities (moles ethanol/moles other products) in excess of 11. The hypothesis that this high ethanol selectivity was a general response to mineral nutrient limitation was tested but could not be supported. Growth and substrate consumption were related by the equation qs(1 - Yxc)GATP = (μ/YATPmax) + m, with qs the specific rate of xylose consumption (moles xylose/hour · g cells), Yxc the carbon based cell yield (g cell carbon/g substrate carbon), GATP the ATP gain (moles ATP produces/mol substrate catabolized), μ the specific growth rate (1/h), YATPmax the ATP-based cell yield (g cells/mol ATP), and m the maintenance coefficient (moles ATP/hour · g cells). YATPmax was found to be 11.6 g cells/mol ATP, and m 9.3 mol ATP/hour · g cells for growth on defined medium. Different responses to nutrient limitation were observed depending on the mode of cultivation. Batch and immobilized cell continuous cultures decreased GATP by initiating production of the secondary metabolites, propanediol, and in some cases, D-lactate; in addition, batch cultures increased the fractional allocation of ATP to maintenance and/or wastage. Nitrogen-limited continuous free-cell cultures maintained a constant cell yield, whereas phosphate-limited continuous free-cell cultures did not. In the case of phosphate limitation, the decreased ATP demand associated with the lowered cell yield was accompanied by an increased rate of ATP consumption for maintenance and/or wastage. Neither nitrogen or phosphorus-limited continuous free-cell cultures exhibited an altered GATP in response to mineral nutrient limitation, and neither produced secondary metabolites. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A comparative study of two alternative networks for TLM modelling of diffusion processes has been undertaken. Some of their inherent advantages and disadvantages are analysed according to the ratio between the impedance of the lossless transmission lines and the lumped resistance. Their relative accuracy and utility in controlling the timestep automatically are examined.

Notes: This paper presents a boundary element formulation for the permanent Navier-Stokes equations in which the well-known closed-form fundamental solution for the steady Stokes equations is employed. In this way, from the integral representation formulae for the Stokes' equations, an integral equation is found in which the original non-linear convective terms of the Navier-Stokes equations appear as a domain integral. Additionally, the method of dual reciprocity is used to transform the domain integral to boundary integrals (this method is closely related to the method of particular integrals also used in the literature to transform domain integrals to boundary integrals). Numerical results are presented for the three-dimensional internal flow in a cylindrical container with a rotating cover, in which the accuracy of the method is shown.

Notes: Fibers were prepared on an experimental scale by wet and dry spining from eight, nonelastomeric polyurethanes based on halogen-substituted bisphenols. The fibers had properties suited to clothing textile uses. They were examined primarily for their potential in wash and wear fabrics. The fibers had moderate water absorption, low shrinkage in hot water, modest lowering of tensile properties under wet conditions, high tensile and work recoveries, and good stability to ultraviolet light. The polyurethanes from piperazines and 2,2-bis (4-hydroxy-3,5-dichlorophenyl) propane bischloroformate had unusually high thermal transitions and good solubility combined with ease of orientation and crystallization in fiber form. Fibers from the 2-methylpiperazine and homopiperazine urethanes were converted to fabrics. These fabrics exhibited a silklike handle, good wash wrinkle recovery, resistance to soil and bleach, stability to ironing at 200°C, and very low flammability.

Notes: This paper reports the results of a study of an error parameter, m, which has been proposed as a measure for determining the effects on accuracy of the basic assumptions upon which TLM modelling of diffusion and heat flow has been founded. The nature of the m parameter is studied in detail by using a two-dimensional thermal diffusion problem. The use of m in the implementation of automatic timestepping is discussed in a practical three-dimensional engineering problem.

Notes: This paper details general expressions for implementing timestep transformations in transmission-line matrix (TLM) modelling of diffusion processes. The expressions can be conveniently incorporated into any TLM routine which models multidimensional problems using a variable meshing technique.

Notes: The collision-induced dissociation (CID) spectra of positive ions of the herbicide diclofop-methyl are reported. The results indicate that for relatively low collision energies (≤75eV, laboratory frame of reference), the distribution of the CID ions of the molecular ion correlates in a qualitative manner with the occurrence of transformation products arising from the degradation of the herbicide in geologic or biofilm materials. At low collision energies (30-45 eV, laboratory frame of reference), the CID spectra contained a preponderance of product ions at m/z 281 and 253. These product ions correspond to prevalent transformation products in soil, 4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)dehydrophenetole (molecular ion 282) and 4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol (molecular ion 254) respectively. At higher collision energies (≥45eV), product ions were observed for up to three bond cleavages. The high energy CID product ions correspond to transformation products observed in mature biofilm materials cultivated on the parent herbicide as the sole carbon source.

Notes: Linear polyurethanes, having high molecular weight, were prepared by interfacial polycondensation from halogen substituted aromatic bischloroformates and aliphatic diamines, piperazines, and aromatic diamines. Examples of specific intermediates are hexamethylenediamine, piperazine, homopiperazine (see formula), m-phenylendiamine, and the bischloroformates of 2,2-bis (4-hy-droxy-3,5-dichlorophenyl) propane, 2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dibromophenyl) propane, and 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane: In comparison with corresponding unhalogenated polyurethanes, the polymers from this study, particularly those based on piperazines, had high glass transition and softening temperatures. Polyurethanes in this class, like most ring-containing polyurethanes, do not have sufficient thermal stability at their high melting points for easy melt for easy melt forming. They were more soluble in a variety of common solvents and had excellent resistance to ultraviolet light. Surprisingly, the irregularity introduced into the polymer chain by the use of such intermediates as homopiperazine (formula above) or 2-methylpiperazine did not inhibit crystallization. On the other hand the symmetry provided by trans-2,5-dimethylpiperazine greatly reduced solubility in many solvents. Several polyamides and a polyurea from homopiperazine are included.
