    Notes: Summary The inheritance of resistance to Russian wheat aphid Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), in two resistant barleys, Hordeum vulgare L., ASE/2CM//B76BB and ‘Gloria/Come’, was studied in the field and in the greenhouse. The resistant genotypes were crossed with susceptible genotypes ‘Esperanza’ and ‘Shyri’. Resistance reactions of F1, BC1, and F2 plants, and individual F2 plant derived F3 families indicated that resistance in each genotype was controlled by the same single dominant gene.

    Notes: Summary During the winters of 1990/91 and 1991/92, 181 accessions of Triticum dicoccon Schrank from the CIMMYT gene-bank were screened in the field for resistance to Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov). Accessions were sown in hill plots of 10 seeds and artificially infested with D. noxia at the two-leaf growth stage. Hills were visually assessed for damage at tillering, booting and heading. Entries differed significantly in their reaction to D. noxia, and severity of symptoms increased with time. Twenty four of the entries were highly resistant to the aphid. In winter 1991/92, 807 accessions of wild and cultivated wheats (26 species) and synthetic hexaploids were screened similarly for resistance to D. noxia. A large number of A-genome species were resistant, while few D-genome species were identified as resistant. These newly discovered sources of resistance can be used to expand the genetic base of resistance to D. noxia in both bread (T. aestivum L.) and durum wheats (T. turgidum L. convar. durum (Desf.) Mackey).

    Notes: Abstract A problem often encountered when assaying mesophyll cell isolates prepared from mature soybean leaves, was that of poor reproducibility in rates of net 14CO2 photoassimilation and NO2 − photoreduction. It was known that soybean source leaves repeatedly displayed their most active net CO2 photoassimilation in the period from attainment of maximal leaf area to approximately two to five days subsequent to that point. Advantage was taken of the fact that when soybean leaflets of each leaf reach their maximal area they also have reached their maximal leaf length from base to tip. This facilitates a more rapid determination of the point in time in which leaflet areas had reached Amax. Soybean plants (Glycine max cv. Williams) were propagated in the growth chamber with a 12 h light-12 h dark cycle, 25δC, 65% RH, and 700 microeinsteins per meter squared per second. At 24 d post-emergence, the third leaf (numbered acropetally from the unifoliates) of each plant had just attained maximum leaflet areas (≈110 cm2) and lengths (≈13 cm). For this study, leaf mesophyll cells were enzymatically isolated, using commercially prepared pectinase, from leaflet sets of leaves selected from each of the second, third, and fourth leaf positions. Maximal rates of net 14CO2 photoassimilation (with 5 mM HCO3 −) for the second, third and fourth leaf (leaflet) isolates were, respectively, 27.0, 57.0, and 41.7 μmol 14CO2 assimilated per milligram chlorophyll per hour; simultaneously maximal rates of NO inf2 sup− photoreduction (1 mM NO inf2 sup− ) were, respectively, 4.4, 8.1, and 0.0 μmol NO inf2 sup− reduced per milligram chlorophyll per hour. These studies made it clear that in order repeatedly to attain reproducible maximal rates of leaf cell isolate net 14CO2 photoassimilation and NO inf2 sup− photoreduction, it always was necessary to select the newest, fully expanded leaves (e.g. leaf number 3) for cell isolation. Leaves from several plants only were pooled if they were excised from identically the same node on each of the plants.

    Description: Orbital debris issues associated with maintaining a Space Shuttle External Tank (ET) on orbit are presented. The first issue is to ensure that the ET does not become a danger to other spacecraft by generating space debris, and the second is to protect the pressurized ET from penetration by space debris or meteoroids. Tests on shield designs for penetration resistance showed that when utilized with an adequate bumper, thermal protection system foam on the ET is effective in preventing penetration.

    Description: This report summarizes the damage analyses performed on the tether cable used for the tethered satellite system (TSS), for the damage that could be caused by meteoroid or orbital debris impacts. The TSS consists of a tethered satellite deployer and a tethered satellite. The analytical studies were performed at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) with the results from the following tests: (1) hypervelocity impact tests to determine the 'critical' meteoroid particle diameter, i.e., the maximum size of a meteoroid particle which can impact the tether cable without causing 'failure'; (2) electrical resistance tests on the damaged and undamaged tether cable to determine if degradation of current flow occurred through the damaged tether cables; and (3) tensile load tests to verify the load carrying capability of the damaged tether cables. Finally, the HULL hydrodynamic computer code was used to simulate the hypervelocity impact of the tether cable by particles at velocities higher than can be tested, to determine the extent of the expected tether damage.

    Description: A preliminary design of a spacecraft shield system to defeat meteoroids and orbital debris during a Mars mission is presented. The mission scenario is first defined in terms of stage times which include LEO, transit, low-Mars orbit, and Mars surface periods. The environment definitions for earth-orbital space debris, planetary meteoroids, and interplanetary meteoroids are next introduced. Shield system design approaches incorporate stochastic simulation, hydrocode analyses, hypervelocity impact testing, and optimization techniques. Structural design trades presented include spacecraft configuration, mission schedule, penetration risk, and total standoff distance between the bumper and wall.
