Notes: The influence of N-acetylglycine on the kinetics of graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto chemically modified jute fibers was studied in the temperature range 40-60°C. The optimum conditions for grafting have been determined by studying the effects of concentrations of monomers, Ce(IV), and N-acetylglycine on the rate of grafting. Besides the effect of time, temperature, and concentration of the acid, the amount of jute fibers and some organic solvents and inorganic salts on the rate of grafting has been investigated. On the basis of experimental findings, a kinetic scheme has been proposed. Infrared spectra of chemically modified jute and grafted jute have been investigated. More than 185% graft yield could be achieved with the present system. Grafting has improved the thermal stability of jute fibers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The micellar effect on the kinetics of ceric ion-initiated polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of N-acetylglycine has been studied in the temperature range 30-50°C. The neutral emulsifier (Triton X-100) has no effect on the Rp, whereas both anionic (NaLS) and cationic (NCTAB) emulsifiers accelerate the rate of polymerization appreciably. Comparison of the effect of different organic substrates on the rate of polymerization has been made. Various effects such as the concentration of metal ion, surfactant, monomer, sulfuric acid, organic solvents, and inorganic salts on Rp have also been investigated. The most remarkable feature of the investigation involves the enhancement of Rp in the presence of micelles. A suitable mechanism for the derivation of the rate expression for the above system is proposed along with the calculation of activation energy and prediction of optimum conditions. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Among 212 vascular prostheses collected in a cascular explant retrival programe, 50 exhibited one or more criteria of graft infection i.e., (a) clinical evidence of graft infection, (b) positive bacteriological analyses of the graft, and (c) presence at the blood-prosthetic interface of characterized microorganisms. Whereas each of these criteria was noted respectively in 25, 26, and 20 cases, there was no complete overlapping among the three criteria, but their combination led us to consider 50 cases of infected vascular grafts among the 212 collected. These results, and the occurrence in two cases among six investigations for viral infection, suggest that extensive bacteriological investigations of cascular explanted should be inculded in an implant retrieval program, and that infection may represent a high risk in graft failure.

Notes: Rare earth molybdate crystals such as those based on lanthanum, neodymium and some mixed molybdates, grown by the gel method, were analysed for major and trace impurity elemental concentrations using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry in order to understand the characteristics of the material in terms of structural perfection and composition. The method used permits the simultaneous determination of rare earth elements such as La and Nd and also Mo and impurities such as Fe and Zn. Based on the observed concentrations of major elements, it is shown that the formulae so far assumed for some of these composites may be incorrect and may need a major refinement. Monoenergetic X-rays of 22.1 and 59.6 keV were employed for fluorescence excitation and optimum detection efficiency was obtained for a large number of elements. Pulverized samples mixed with cellulose powder and specimens prepared in the form of pellets were used. The fundamental parameter method was used for the quantitative estimation of elemental concentration.

Notes: A close-coupled side-source geometrical configuration is proposed for obtaining a high detection sensitivity for rare earth elements (57 ≤ Z ≤ 69) by radioisotope-excited energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. In this configuration a disc source of241 Am (100 mCi), a high-purity germanium detector and thin samles of rare earth elements on a Mylar backing are employed in an optimized geometry to achieve detection limits in the range 20-50 ng for these elements in a counting time of 1 h.

Notes: Carbon-13 spectral assignments of three friedelanes and nineteen secofriedelanes have been made from mutual correlations, 2D X-H correlation analyses and comparison with the carbon shifts of friedelin, which were firmly established by an INADEQUATE experiment that required reassignment of some of its resonances. Specific methyl and methine proton resonance assignments for some friedelanes, established from X-H correlation studies, are also reported.
