Notes: Abstract Microscopic foam films from suspensions of small unilamellar dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) vesicles have been obtained. The film formation is facilitated at temperatures above the gel-liquid crystalline transition of DMPC. A detailed study of the dependence of equilibrium thickness of DMPC foam films on electrolyte concentration at constant capillary pressure and a direct measurement of the disjoining pressure isotherm has been carried out. Formation of thick equilibrium horizontal microscopic films stabilized with DMPC at low external pressures and low electrolyte concentrations was found and interpreted as being due to the existence of long-range electrostatic interactions in these films. A diffuse electric layer potential of 36 mV has been calculated. The DMPC films have been compared to films obtained from non-ionic surfactant solutions where the long range electrostatic repulsion is explained as being due to specific adsorption of OH− at the film interfaces. However, unlike the results obtained for surfactant films, in this study formation of common black films and thinning of the DMPC Newton film with pressure have been observed.

Notes: The fatigue resistance of 6 inch Schedule 40 PVC solvent-bonded pipe fittings was investigated. It has often been assumed that the performance of PVC fittings is comparable to that of the corresponding pipe. The results of this study indicate that the fatigue performance of PVC fittings is much lower than that of the pipe. Several fittings were exposed to a repetitive surge cycle of 90 to 180 psig at a rate of 0.111 hertz. Failures of several tees occurred between 13,000 and 16,000 cycles, much sooner than the predicted lifetime of pipe under these conditions.

Description: We report on the results of a continuation of a large monitoring program of optical spectroscopy of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The new observations presented here were obtained between 1990 December and 1992 October, and extend the existing database to nearly 1400 days, dating back to 1988 December. The continuum variations are generally smooth and well-resolved, except during the third year of this 4 year project, when the variations were apparently more rapid and of lower amplitude than observed at other times. The broad H(beta) emission line is found to vary in response to the continuum variations with a lag of about 18 days, but with some changes from year to year. The H(beta) transfer functions for each of the 4 yr and for the entire 4 yr database are derived by using a maximum entropy method.

Description: Seven rovibrational transitions of the (01/1/0)-(00/0/0) fundamental bending band of C3 have been measured with high precision with the use of a tunable far-infrared laser spectrometer. The C3 molecules were produced by laser vaporization of a graphite rod and cooled in a supersonic expansion. The astrophysically important nu-2 fundamental frequency is determined to be 63.416529(40)/cm. These measurements provide the basis for studies of C3 in the interstellar medium with far-infrared astronomy.
