Notes: This study is based on the use of integral, hybrid thermal barrier to protect the core of the composite structure. Thermal barrier treatments evaluated in this study include ceramic fabric, ceramic coating, intumescent coating, hybrid of ceramic and intumescent coating, silicone foam, and phenolic skin. The composite systems evaluated in combination with thermal barrier treatments included glass/vinyl ester, graphite/epoxy, graphite/bismaleimide, and graphite/phenolic. All configurations were tested for flammability characteristics. These included smoke density and combustion gas generation (ASTM E-662), residual flexural strength (ASTM D-790), heat release rate, and ignitability (ASTM E-1354). ASTM E-662 test method covers the determination of specific optical density of smoke generated by solid materials. ASTM D-790 test method covers the determination of flexural properties of composite materials in the form of rectangular bars. ASTM E-1354 (cone calorimeter) covers the measurement of the response of materials exposed to controlled levels of radiant heating with or without an external ignitor, and is used to determine the ignitability, heat release rates, mass loss rates, effective heat of combustion, and visible smoke development. Without any fire barrier treatments, all composite systems evaluated in this study failed to meet ignitability and peak heat release requirements of MIL-STD-2031 (SH) at radiant heat fluxes of 75 and 100 kW m-2, respectively. Intumescent coating and a hybrid system consisting of intumescent coating over ceramic coating were the most effective fire barrier treatments for composite systems evaluated in this study. Using either of these treatments, all composite systems met the ignitability requirements of 90 and 60 at 75 and 100 kW m-2, respectively. Except for glass/vinyl ester, all systems also met the peak and average heat release requirements of MIL-STD-2031 (SH) at radiant heat fluxes of 25, 75, and 100 kW m-2, respectively.

Notes: The complete 1H and 13C NMR spectra of the mycotoxin zearalenone are described. An analysis of all the vicinal proton-proton coupling constants, together with molecular modelling results, leads to a three-dimensional structure very similar to those observed x-ray crystallographically for related systems. Analogous data on zearalanone reveal that whereas the overall molecular geometry is similar to that of zearalenone, the alkyl terminus of the 12-membered bridging moiety is now oriented almost orthogonally to the aromatic ring plane.

Notes: The analysis of the 1H and 19F NMR spectra of the corticosteroid fluocinonide and five related steroids is reported. The 500 MHz 1H NMR spectra revealed several previously undetected long-range 1H-19F coupling constants. These couplings were assigned by the application of the heteronuclear equivalent of the COSY pulse sequence. The fluorine substituent effects and long-range heteronuclear couplings were examined in relation to structures derived from molecular mechanics (MMX) calculations.

Notes: The α-amino acids with long alkyl side chains, the so-called lipidic amino acids 1a-e, and their homo-oligomers, the lipidic peptides 1p-aj, represent a class of compounds which combine the structural properties of peptides and proteins with the characteristics of lipids and membranes. The amino acids were synthesised from the appropriate alkyl bromide and diethyl acetamidomalonate. Resolution was made chemically, by forming diastereomers of the amino acid esters with an optically pure α-pinene derivative. The protected homooligomers were synthesised in solution with the assistance of a water-soluble carbodiimide coupling agent. In order to modify the physical and chemical properties of the peptides, a series of protected hetero-oligomers were prepared, by similar methods, incorporating either other amino acids (3a - d, 7a - i) or side-chain-substituted lipidic amino acids (6a-d).

Notes: A common system of primary lubricants in rigid PVC extrusion compounds is calcium stearate plus paraffin wax. Secondary lubricants are frequently added to this system at low concentrations with the intention of improving such properties as metal release, thermal stability, plateout, extrudate surface appearance, etc. This paper discusses the results of laboratory studies designed to evaluate the contribution to these properties of two commonly used secondary lubricants: AC629A, an oxidized low molecular weight polyethylene, and K175, an acrylic “lubricating processing aid.” Surprisingly, the testing showed little improvement in performance when these auxiliary lubricants were added.

Notes: Lipidic and glyco-lipidic cephalosporin conjugates 1c and 1i were synthesised as diastereomeric mixtures to improve their oral absorption. 2-(tert-Butoxycarbonylamino)tetradecanoic acid was condensed with thiazole 1d and by following basecatalysed hydrolysis of the fully protected rac-1e, the free acid rac-1f was produced. This was then used to acylate the carboxy-protected cephalosporin analog 1g by using a modified Vilsmeier reaction. Removal of the protecting groups of 1b resulted in conjugate 1c. Cephalosporin conjugate li, which contains a sugar moiety in addition to a lipidic amino acid residue, was synthesised to produce a drug conjugate with both lipophilic and hydrophilic properties [radiolabelled (14C) analogs 1a, 1c and 1i were also synthesised]. The radio-labelled parent 1a and conjugates 1c and 1i were administered orally to rats and uptake of the radiolabel in the blood, various organs, urine and faeces was determined. The results showed that an increase in lipophilicity caused an increase in the oral uptake, suggesting that conjugation to lipidic amino acids and peptides is a useful approach to the improvement of the absorption of poorly absorbed drugs.

Notes: Charge-coupled devices can provide an excellent means for the quantification of DNA band images on membranes and photographic film. However, proper consideration must be given to important parameters such as signal-to-noise ratio and resolution, especially in applications which demand the use of large format media. When employed in the direct imaging of chemiluminescent blots, the charge-coupled device can provide equal or better sensitivity than that obtained by indirect methods using film, with the additional advantages of wide dynamic range and freedom from the vagaries of film processing.

Notes: N-Terminal sequence analysis of proteins separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and transferred onto polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes has become the method for molecular characterization of proteins contained in biological samples. However, the proteins of lower abundance cannot be sequenced directly, without improving the technique. We have studied a drying method on several PVDF membranes including Trans-Blott, Immobilon P and Problott. Using Amido Black, Coomassie Brilliant Blue R-250 and Ponceau S, we have obtained, in comparison with the non-dried membranes, an enormous increase in the number of detectable proteins.

Notes: This publication establishes a reference human liver protein map obtained with immobilized pH gradients. By microsequencing, 57 spots or 42 polypeptide chains were identified. By protein map comparison and matching (liver, red blood cell and plasma sample maps), 8 additional proteins were identified. The new polypeptides and previously known proteins are listed in a table and/or labeled on the protein map, thus providing a human liver two-dimensional gel database. This reference map can be used to identify protein spots on other samples such as rectal cancer biopsies.
