Description: The luminosity of the brightest cluster galaxies remains the best standard candle for observational cosmology. Studies of over 250 relatively nearby clusters show that the luminosity of these objects within an aperture of constant metric diameter has a dispersion of only 0.35 mag. The observations considered by Schneider et al. (1983) were acquired to measure the aperture luminosities of the brightest cluster galaxies. However, the data base, because of its high signal-to-noise ratio and large spatial coverage, allows several other investigations to be performed. In the present investigation, surface photometry of the brightness three galaxies within approximately 250 kpc of the cluster center is presented, taking into account the cores of 83 Abell clusters. The relevance of the photometry to cosmological studies is also discussed. It is found that dynamical friction does play an extremely important role in determining properties of brightest cluster galaxies and cluster morphology.

Notes: ---Gelling agents based on polysaccharides have become extremely important in the food industry. As more and more products like soups and sauces have become available in lyophilized form, thickeners have to be added to give a controlled consistency to the finished meal. A capillary electrophoretic method has been developed to investigate the monosaccharide composition of hydrolyzed thickeners. 2-Aminoanthracene was used as a derivatization reagent to allow sensitive fluorescence detection. This system was applied to a set of standard thickeners as well as to food samples.

Notes: Introduction of solutions of up to several milliliters by on-column injection of large volumes or by coupled HPLC-GC may cause problems with GC detectors (FID, AFID, MS). For instance, dichloromethane forms large amounts of hydrochloric acid and carbon black in FIDs.A column effluent splitter was developed for keeping the major portion of the solvent vapors away from the detector; approximately 99% of the vapor is vented while the remaining 1% of vapor is used for detecting the widths of the solvent peaks. During analysis, the split ratio is reversed by a strong increase of the resistance to the gas flow through the split exit line. The system was used for the determination of di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) in triglyceride matrices of various foods. Direct determination by HPLC is not sufficiently sensitive, whereas direct analysis by GC is hindered by the triglycerides. Solutions of fats or oils were pre-separated on a silica column using dichloro-methanelcyclohexane 1:l with addition of 0.05 % acetonitrile as eluent. The HPLC fraction containing the DEHP was transferred to GC through a loop-type interface using concurrent solvent evaporation. Detection limits were around 0.1 ppm.

Notes: A gas-chromatographic analyzer allowing the selective detection of individual oxygenates in complex organic mixtures, such as gasolines, is described. The analyzer is based on the oxygen-specific response flame ionization detection (O-FID) method. The system operates with capillary columns and includes a cracking reactor to convert any oxygenate to carbon monoxide and a special FID equipped with a microreactor for the catalytic hydro-genation of CO and detection as methane. Hydrocarbons give no signal. The selectivity of the method is better than 1:107 and the linear range approaches 105. The analysis of modern fuels containing oxygenated additives, to improve octane ratings, may greatly benefit from the proposed analytical method.

Notes: It is shown that the position of the double bond close to the hydrocarbon end of an aliphatic diene functionalized at C(1) can readily be determined by chemical ionization with NO+. Owing to the low abundance of the ions characteristic for the position of the other double bond, its localization may be difficult. Measurement of the chemical ionization (nitric oxide as reagent gas) spectra of the corresponding epoxides or collision activation studies can help.

Notes: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) has the potential for providing a rapid alternative to gel electrophoresis for DNA sequence analysis provided that an intense mass spectrometric response can be obtained from mixtures of DNA fragments containing up to 300 nucleotides. MALDI-MS has not yet proved viable for such analyses because the MS response falls off rapidly for mixed-base DNA fragments containing more than 20-30 nucleotides. Previous studies have demonstrated that base composition is a critical factor in the MALDI-MS response of oligodeoxyribonucleotides. This paper describes an investigation of the physical roots of the observed influence of base composition on the mass spectrometric response, focusing on homopolymer oligodeoxyribonucleotides (dT7, dT10, dT18, dT36, dG7, dG10, dG18, dI18 and dU18) and dT5G5. Forty-eight different matrix compounds were tested for their ability to produce laser desorption masses spectra from such homopolymer oligodeoxyribonucleotides. Considerably stronger mass spectrometric responses were obtained from polydeoxythymidines than from polydeoxyguanosines, polydeoxycytidines and polydeoxyadenosines. Although mass spectral peaks corresponding to dT18 were observed from 20 of the matrices studied, no discernible response was observed for dG18 from any of these matrices. To elucidate the physical basis for origins of the observed differences in response, a number of factors were investigated including the ionization efficiency, the tendency towards fragmentation and the extent to which the oligodeoxyribonucleotides were incorporated into the matrix crystals. The results of these experiments indicate that low ionization efficiency is not a likely main contributor to the low response to polydeoxyguanosines, fragmentation is a likely main contributor to the low response to polydeoxyguanosines, the overall incorporation of polydeoxyguanosines into matrix crystals is comparable to that for polydeoxythymidines and the exocyclic amino group of guanosine, adenosine and cytidine has a strong inhibitory effect on the mass spectrometric response.

Notes: Practical hints are summarized for the investigation of peptides by soft ionization methods based on liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry. The method aims: to purify the sample; to force a peptide to the surface by ion pair formation; to recover the sample used for mass spectral analysis; to distinguish between Lys and Gln by derivatization; to spot amino acids in the low mass region; and to improve sequence information by use of peptide fragments, not described previously.

Notes: Non-derivatized gibberellin glucosyl conjugates were analysed by capillary reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Positive as well as negative ion mass spectra were obtained by frit fast atom bombardment. The spectra were found to provide useful information for the identification and structural elucidation of the glucosyl conjugates.

Notes: Piperidine is a putative neurotransmitter. Its sensitive determination is one of the prerequisites for the evaluation of its assumed physiological role. For its derivatization 5-di-n-butylaminonaphthalene-1-sulphonyl chloride, a new reagent which improves methods applying 5-dimethylaminonaphthalene-1-sulphonyl chloride, is used. Reaction of the perchloric acid tissue extract with this reagent, thin-layer chromatographic separation of the fluorescent derivatives and mass spectrometric evaluation of the di-n-butylaminonaphthalenesulphonyl piperidine spot by a version of the integrated ion current technique allows the determination of piperidine in tissues in picomole quantities. Standard deviation of the determinations of 2 to 16 pmol of piperidine added to 50 mg of brain tissue was ±8%. The method was applied to the analysis of different tissues. Brain concentrations of piperidine in different species were found to be lower by a factor up to 100 in comparison with published data.

Notes: Fourteen permethylated gibberellin glucosides were investigated by capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The electron impact mass spectra show a characteristic fragmentation pattern which can be used in structural elucidation of gibberellin glucosides, e.g. in the determination of the site of glucosylation at the gibberellin skeleton.
