    Description: The hexagonal, pole-centered cloud feature in Saturn's northern atmosphere, as revealed in Voyager close-encounter imaging mosaics, may be interpreted as a stationary Rossby wave. The wave is embedded within a sharply peaked eastward jet (of 100 meters per second) and appears to be perturbed by at least one anticyclonic oval vortex immediately to the south. The effectively exact observational determination of the horizontal wave number and phase speed, applied to a simple model dispersion relation, suggests that the wave is vertically trapped and provides a diagnostic template for further modeling of the deep atmospheric stratification.

    Description: In September 1990, an atmospheric disturbance in the form of an abnormally high albedo area developed in the equatorial region of Saturn. Events of this nature are exceedingly rare for this planet as they have been detected in the equatorial region on only two other occasions in over a century. In ongoing monitoring of the atmospheres of the outer planets, CCD imaging observations of Saturn by New Mexico State University's Tortugas Mountain Station were made before, during, and after the disturbance's formation through both broad-band filters and narrow-band visible/near-IR filters centered in methane absorption bands. Also, multispectral Hubble Space Telescope observations were made within weeks of the event and later in 1991. These observations were calibrated and scans of reflectivity at constant latitude are being modeled with a vertically inhomogeneous, multiple scattering model previously used to model Jupiter's South Equatorial Belt brightening event in 1989. In addition, the reflectivity of the disturbance as a function of the scattering angles is being obtained so as to model this feature's vertical structure in particular. A preliminary report of the modeling results will be presented.

    Description: Aspects of the time-variable nature of the Jovian atmosphere are addressed using high-resolution photometrically calibrated multicolored imaging data obtained over two Jovian apparitions. During the period of observations, Jupiter's South Equatorial Belts (SEB) underwent a drastic brightening and its Equatorial Zone gradually darkened throughout the period. Based on the data, vertically inhomogeneous atmospheric structure models are constructed and used to make direct quantitative comparisons between different latitudinal regions and different epochs. The drastic brightening of the SEB is explained by an increase in both the optical thickness and the single-scattering albedo of the upper tropospheric cloud.

    Description: The present steady-state, linearized and zonally-averaged model of the thermal response of Saturn's atmosphere to seasonal insolation is compared with extant data in order to extract diagnostic information on the planet's troposphere and stratosphere. The planet's rings are shown to constitute a strong modulator of the seasonal insolation function. A detailed comparison of the model with existing temperature measurements shows that the large thermal inertia of Saturn and uncertainties in the wind and thermal measurements overwhelm the rings' thermal effects. A meridional asymmetry in heating is noted which is consistent with an enhancement of aerosols and of photochemically generated ethane and acetylene in the southern hemisphere's summer.

    Description: The present comparison of two sets of HST data from August and November 1990 with Voyager 1 and 2 data acquired in 1980 and 1981 gives attention to Saturn's equatorial-region disturbance of September 1990. Longitudinal variations in the equatorial zonal winds are interpreted as evidence for interaction between the storm nucleus that was generated during the disturbance and the local wind field.

    Description: Observational data are presented which are consistent with the generation of the Saturn equatorial surface brightenings observed in September, 1990, by a single convective disturbance which created constructively and destructively interfering wave patterns. The initial development, size, duration, and appearance of this storm are similar to the equatorial storms of 1876 and 1933. Attention is given to the motions of the initial convective disturbance and its expansion and mature phases.
