    Notes: Heats of formation, protonation energies, charge distributions, dipole moments, and geometrical structures of thirty-two 1-, 2-, 1,5-, and 2,5-substituted tetrazoles have been investigated by different semiempirical SCF MO calculations. MNDO and, in some cases, AM1 methods are the most acceptable for tetrazole derivatives. A number of linear correlations between available experimental data and the calculated energies and charge characteristics have been established. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A mutually consistent method to calculate excitation energies and corresponding transition densities is proposed. The method is based on the extended Brillouin's theorem that is derived from the nonstationary variation principle. Within the proposed procedure, the Brillouin's conditions, which appear in this extension, are used as a set of nonlinear equations for molecular orbitals and configuration interaction coefficients of the trial ground- and excited-state functions. The excitation energy is an eigenvalue of the set. To some extent, this procedure is related to the variational treatment of the conventional random-phase approximation within the equation-of-motion method. The basic features of the proposed procedure are discussed and it is illustrated by numerical examples. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: An approximately 5000-year-old mummified human body was recently found in the Tyrolean Alps. The DNA from tissue samples of this Late Neolithic individual, the so-called "Ice Man," has been extracted and analyzed. The number of DNA molecules surviving in the tissue was on the order of 10 genome equivalents per gram of tissue, which meant the only multi-copy sequences could be analyzed. The degradation of the DNA made the enzymatic amplification of mitochondrial DNA fragments of more than 100 to 200 base pairs difficult. One DNA sequence of a hypervariable segment of the mitochondrial control region was determined independently in two different laboratories from internal samples of the body.     Notes: Electronic aspects of the catalytic mechanism of liver alcohol dehydrogenase (LADH) are studied with the help of ab initio analytical gradient SCF MO methods. Three points are considered: (i) role of the catalytic zinc; (ii) geometry and electronic structure of the transition state for the hydride transfer reactions; and (iii) factors affecting the energy gap for the hydride transfer step, namely, substrate binding to zinc, reaction field, and serine 48 effects on the potential energy profile. The coordination sphere of the catalytic zinc has been modeled with an ammonia molecule and two SH- groups; complexes with CH3O-, CH3OH, and CH2O have been studied; a (6, 2, 2, 2, 1/6, 2, 1/3, 2) basis set has been used for Zn++; a (5, 2, 1, 1/3, 2) was used for oxygen, carbon, and sulfur; and a (3, 1) was used for hydrogen atoms. The hydride step was studied with two model systems: pyridinium cation/1,4-dihydropyridine coupled to the CH3O-/CH2O reaction, and cyclopropenyl cation/cyclopropene coupled to the CH3O-/CH2O system. For the latter, the role of Ser48 has been studied at the supermolecule level. The calculation on the hydride transfer step has been done at a 4-31G basis set level. The results obtained shed new light on the sources of catalytic activity of liver alcohol dehydrogenases.

    Notes: We present a treatment of chemisorption that uses the Green matrix of the surface and the admolecule, as well as a cluster calculation of a small surface cluster. Since full HF-SCF-band structures with nonlocal exchange are available now for larger systems for a couple of years, it is possible to treat the substrate surface and the admolecule on equal footing. This offers a natural way to solve the embedding problem. We have applied the formalism to the adsorption of H2 on beryllium and show that in contrast to cluster calculations there appears a binding, which is experimentally verified.

    Notes: Density functional calculations - with a local density approximation for the exchange and correlation energy - provide a numerically efficient method for determining total energy variations in molecules. Coupled with molecular dynamics techniques such as simulated annealing, they provide a scheme for probing large regions of configuration space in molecules. We outline the main features of the method and apply it to different ring isomers of S7O, S8, S7Se, Se8, and O8.

    Notes: Extensive SCF-LCAO-MO variational and perturbative configuration interaction (CI) calculations framed within an effective core potential approximation have been performed to determine the two experimentally observed geometrical isomers of Ag O2 and the interconversion route between them. These structural forms, associated to the ground-state local minima, yield virtually the same energy, and their spontaneous interconversion is strongly indicated, which agrees fairly well with the experimental measurements. The reaction Ag + O2 → Ag O2 was theoretically analyzed along a CI fully optimized energy pathway for the ground and various excited states, within C2v and Cs symmetry. Although a tight-ion pair (Ag+ O2-) character is predicted for the ground state at the equilibrium geometries, its dissociation leads to neutral rather than to ionic fragments. The study of the reaction path within Cs symmetry shows an avoided crossing between the ground state and another 2A″ potential curve where the former correlates adiabatically with the reactants Ag(2S) + O2(1Δg). This indicates that the formation of the complex proceeds via a reactive state of molecular oxygen. The higher 2A″ electronic curves correlate with the metal 2P excited state, and the oxygen binding is found to be less favorable. The present results are shown to have an important bearing on the experimentally known catalytic properties of oxygen adsorbed on silver surfaces.

    Notes: The potential energy hypersurface of the histamine monocation is determined by ab initio methods at the STO-4G level using analytical gradient techniques. Three transition states and two minima have been found for the Nτ—H tautomer. One of the transition states connects the trans conformational region with a minimum gauche structure, where the proton of the ammonium group is approximately halfway between the Nπ of the imidazole group and the N of the ammonium group, but nearer to the Nπ. This minimum connects the potential energy surface of the Nτ—H tautomer with the imidazolium one. In the latter region, three transition states and two minima have been found. Critical points are discussed in relation with experimental data and histamine H2 receptor models.

    Notes: The graph-theoretical approach recently developed for comparing and ordering isomeric chemical compounds is extended and applied to the calculation of various molecular properties of C9 and C10 alkanes (critical densities, volumes, and pressures; heats and entropies of vaporization; standard entropies in liquid and gas state). The key to the approach is in specifying subsets of comparable isomers which are located in the same paths in the so-called comparability graphs. Optimized samples for structure-property correlations are thus obtained.

    Notes: A basis set of evenly spaced S-type Gaussian functions with common exponents is examined. Formulas for common one- and two-electron integrals are derived. Because of thesymmetry of this basis set, a very compact two-electron integral list is produced. The number of two-electron integrals that must be stored is approximately eight times the number of basis functions. Use of this basis set in an SCF calculation is examined. Numerical results show that this approach works well for molecules containing only small atoms such as hydrogen, helium, or lithium, but that the method has problems with the core orbitals of heavier atoms. Procedures for augementing this basis set in calculations involving heavier atoms are examined.
