Notes: Polymeric supports on the base of linear and crosslinked polystyrenes have been used in this work for the immobilization of Ti-Mg Ziegler-Natta complexes. The resulting catalysts are tested in the homopolymerization of ethylene in a suspension process at 358 K and a total pressure of 0.84 MPa. By use of hydrogen for molecular weight control, injection moulding polyethylene in good yield is obtained. Influences of support parameters on a catalytic activity, melt flow index, and bulk density are studied.

Notes: The quantitative synthesis and complete characterization of 1,2-bis(p-vinylphenyl)ethane (p,p-BVPE) and its meta-, para-mixed isomers are reported. These crosslinkers copolymerize randomly with p-methylstyrene, leading to random crosslink distributions. The crosslinkers are prepared by Grignard coupling of (m,p)-vinylbenzyl chloride in tetrahydrofuran at low temperature to give the statistical mixture of m,m-, m,p-, and p,p-isomers in quantitative yield. Pure p-vinylbenzyl chloride is converted to pure p,p-BVPE. p,p-BVPE has also been separated from the mixture of isomers. The isomers are characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR and by reversed-phase HPLC. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: New size exclusion chromatography (SEC) resins based on a crosslinker having independent vinyl groups have been produced and compared with SEC resins based on divinylbenzene-55 (DVB). 1,2-Bis(p-vinylphenyl)ethane (p,p-BVPE) and its meta-isomers were suspension-copolymerized with p-methylstyrene in the presence of different porogens to give particles of about 5 μm average diameter. The porous particles were slurry-packed into stainless steel columns for SEC evaluation. Calibration curves were obtained using narrow disperse polystyrene standards with molecular weights ranging from 580 to 3,040,000. The calibration curves for the new BVPE resins covered wider useful molecular weight ranges than those for comparable divinylbenzene resins. Particle size, surface morphology and the properties of pores were studied using a Coulter Multisizer II, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, and mercury porosimetry. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Thin, adherent and stable polymeric films of 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (abbreviated as PPAR) were prepared by oxidative polymerization in 0.2 M NaOH solutions. PPAR films deposited on GC electrodes were found to inhibit the electron transfer reactions of the couple [Fe(CN)6]3-/4-. The redox behaviour of CuCl2 in 0.5 M KCl at bare and PPAR-covered GC electrodes was studied by cyclic voltammetry, RDE voltammetry and chronoamperometry. At PPAR-covered electrodes the peak potential of deposition of Cu occurs at ≃ 260 mV more cathodic potential than bare electrodes whereas the redox peaks of Cu2+/1+ and the oxidation of Cu → Cu1+ occur at the same potentials. Catalysis of thc redox processes of the couple Cu2+/1+ at PPAR-covered electrodes is attributed to incorporation of the redox species by chelation and electrostatic attraction. The diffusion coefficient of Cu2+ species (D = 0.29 × 10-5cm2 S-1) at PPAR-covered electrodes was found to be less than at bare electrodes (D = 0.95 × 10-5 cm2 S-1) whereas the effective bulk concentration (CO* = 28 mM) is higher than the used concentration: 10 mM.

Notes: Stable electroactive polymer films of cobalt complex of 4(5-chloro-2-pyridylazo)-1,3-diaminobenzene (abbreviated as PCoL2) were prepared on glassy carbon electrodes by the oxidative polymerization of the complex in acetonitrile. Two pairs of reversible redox peaks for PCoL2 films were observed. The first pair is attributed to the electroactivity of the skeleton of the polymer and the other is attributed to the redox processes of the CO3+/2+ couple. The surface concentration of the electroactive Co sites was found to increase with increasing the film thickness. Mediation of reduction of [Fe(CN)6]3- by PCoL2 films was investigated by steady state measurements. The rate of the mediated reaction was found to be controlled by the rate of the charge propagation within the film & the rate of diffusion of the substrate through the film beside the rate of diffusion of the substrate to the electrode. Thin films were found to be potentially more efficient for the mediation than thicker films.

Notes: Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR-1502) was mixed with 100 phr superreinforcing furnace (SRF) black. The obtained rubber vulcanizate was subjected to electrical conductivity measurements at different values of tensile deformation. The log V vs. log I graphs showed two distinct linear stages, the slope of which is nearly independent of the tensile deformation in the first stage and decreases with tensile deformation in the second stage. On the other hand, the tensile deformation was found to have an appreciable effect on the electrical conductivity. It decreases sharply as the sample is suddenly strained and then increases exponentially with time. An empirical formula describing this behavior is suggested.
