Notes: This article describes the histological and ultrastructural appearance of the interface created in the implantation bed, between bone tissue and implants made of dense sintered hydroxyapatite (HA). Biopsies from dog subjects included: (a) loaded permucosal dental implants for tooth substitution, (b) subperiosteally placed implants for alveolar bone correction, (c) endosseously placed dental root implants to retain ridge form following extraction. The light and electron microscopical results show extensive bone apposition on the osseous sides of the implant surfaces. There is an intimate, direct bone contact without any visible interruption. The bone is of normal lamellar type and continuously connected with the trabecular bone. Bone has grown into the finest surface irregularities of the implant. Collagen fibers of the calcified bone matrix are observed within a distance less than 500 Å from the implant surface. The thin (20-100 Å) electron dense layer at the bone-implant interface resembled the lamina limitans of organic bone matrix, also seen at the inner walls of the osteocytes lacunes. Deposition of bone gives rise to a biologically stable bone-implant interface, without disturbance of the physiological bone turnover. This is seen as very favorable for desired long term fixation of implant to bone.

Notes: Poly(ester-imide)s with a regular sequence of aliphatic spacers and aromatic imide mesogens were prepared in two ways. Either aliphatic α,ω-diacids were condensed with an acetylated diphenol derived from 4-hydroxyphthalic acid and 4-aminophenol, or aliphatic α,ω-diacid dichlorides were condensed with the silylated diphenol. The resulting poly(ester-imide)s were characterized by elemental analyses, viscosity measurements, microscopy under polarized light, DSC- and WAXS measurements. All poly(ester-imide)s are crystalline materials with a layered supermolecular structure in the solid state. Above the melting point a nematic mesophase exists over a broad temperature range. A pronounced odd-even effect was found for the temperature of isotropization, but not for the melting points.

Notes: Pancreatic ducts of young posthatching Rana temporaria tadpoles are the main component of the developing pancreas. At this stage (free-swimming tadpoles with internal gills), duct cells display a high degree of development of basal and lateral outfoldings of the cell membrane with extensive interdigitation, and numerous mitochondria are present throughout the cytoplasm. Wide intercellular spaces also exist, sometimes forming canaliculi-like structures. Since these traits are characteristic of cells engaged in osmotic regulation, we suggest the possibility that this temporary duct system participates in such control. Duct cells in tadpoles with well-developed hindlegs have diminished interdigitation, and mitochondria are localized apically. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: A series of polyisophthalamides containing pendent phenylthio groups was prepared from seven aromatic diamines and 5-phenylthioisophthalic acid by the phosphorylation polycondensation method. The properties of these polymers were compared with those of the analogous unmodified ones. The modified polymers exhibited better solubility in organic solvents than their unmodified counterparts. They also showed glass transition temperatures that were lower by approximately 30°C. However, the presence of the side groups did not bring about any substantial lowering of the thermal stability as measured by TGA. Other properties investigated were mechanical strength and water sorption.

Notes: Polyisophthalamides containing benzoyl pendent groups were prepared from 5-benzoylisophthaloyl chloride and seven aromatic diamines, and their properties were compared with those of unsubstituted polyisophthalamides. The incorporation of one pendent benzoyl group per repeat unit brought about a decrease in the glass transition temperature of 10-30°C, relative to the unmodified polymers, while the thermal resistance (programmed TGA) remained unchanged or went down slightly. Other properties investigated were mechanical properties, solubility, and water absorption. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Schwann cells (SC), the myelinating cells of the peripheral nervous system, show a remarkable capacity to switch from a differentiated state to a proliferative state both during development and peripheral nerve regeneration. In order to better understand the regulatory mechanisms involved with this change we are studying a Schwann cell line transfected with the SV-40 large T gene (TSC). Serum-free medium combined with elevating intra-cellular cAMP levels produced a slower proliferating TSC whose morphology changed from pleiomorphic to process bearing, reminiscent of primary SC in culture. This change was abrogated by colcemid but was unaltered by cytochalasin D, indicating a major role for microtubules. Ultrastructural studies demonstrated numerous microtubules in the cellular extensions which correlated with strong immunocytochemical staining for tubulin in the processes. Analysis of cytoskeletal fractions from the treated cells revealed a greater proportion of tubulin in the polymerized state compared with untreated cells which closely resembled the distribution in primary SC. The cytoskeletal changes observed in the TSC as a result of elevating the intra-cellular cAMP levels may reflect the earliest cellular changes in the induction of myelination. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: A series of polyisophthalamides containing phenylsulfonyl groups was prepared from seven aromatic diamines and 5-phenylsulfonylisophthalic acid by the phosphorylation condensation method, and from 5-phenylsulfonylisophthaloyl chloride by the solution polycondensation method at low temperature. When compared to the analogous unmodified polyisophthalamides, the modified ones were found to be essentially amorphous, and they showed better solubility in organic solvents, and slightly higher glass transition temperatures. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the polyisophthalamides containing pendent phenylsulfonyl groups have thermal stabilities similar to the unmodified ones. Mechanical strength of films and water sorption were also investigated. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The zinc-sulfonated EPDM (SEPDM)-epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) blend is selfcrosslinkable in the sense that it undergoes crosslinking on molding at high temperatures without the aid of any external curing agents. This is evident from Monsanto rheometric, solvent swelling, and infrared spectroscopic studies. The sulfonate anion is believed to react with an epoxide ring, leading to the formation of sulfonate ester and ether crosslinks. The extent of crosslinking depends on the degree of sulfonation of SEPDM and epoxidation level of ENR, the blend ratio, molding time, and temperature. Dynamic mechanical analyses of the blends show the immiscibility of the blend components. The chemical interaction is also manifested in the shift of the glass transition temperature of ENR to the hightemperature region. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The most commonly used chemopreventive agents in the prevention of oral leukoplakia, head and neck cancer, and lung cancer are β-carotene, vitamin A, and other retinoids. One of the few chemopreventive agents not in this group and presently being used in a clinical trial is N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC). NAC, an antioxidant, is used in EUROSCAN, a European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) chemoprevention study in curatively treated patients with oral, laryngeal, or lung cancer. The rationale for choosing NAC is based on a variety of experimental data showing its ability to exert protective effects, including extracellular inhibition of mutagenic agents from exogenous and endogenous sources, inhibition of genotoxicity of reactive oxygen species, modulation of metabolism coordinated with blocking of reactive metabolites, protection of DNA and nuclear enzymes, and prevention of the formation of carcinogen-DNA adducts. NAC has also demonstrated an effect on mutagen-induced chromosomal sensitivity assays, and on anticarcinogenicity in experimental animal models. In addition, preliminary data from EUROSCAN show good compliance in treated patients and a low frequency of side effects.
