    Notes: Abstract The synthetic analogue of a bacterially produced polyester, poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was synthesized from racemic β-butyrolactone using anin situ trimethyl aluminum-water catalyst. The polymer was fractionated into samples differing in molecular weight and isotactic diad content. The latter was closely related to degree of crystallinity. The biodegradation of these fractions were examined by monitoring mass loss over time in the presence of anAlcaligenes faecalis T1 extracellular bacterial poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) depolymerase. The fraction with high isotactic diad tacticity content showed little or no degradation over a 50 hour incubation period, whereas the fraction of intermediate isotactic diad content degraded in a continuous steady fashion at a rate that was less than that for bacterial PHB. The low isotactic diad fraction underwent a rapid initial degradation, followed by no further mass loss. The presence of stereoblocks in the polymer structure of the various fractions was an influence on the degree of susceptibility towards degradation and is related to sample crystallinity.

    Notes: Abstract      The highly radioresistant Rubrobacter radiotolerans, contains red pigments. Since the pigments could not be extracted by usual methods, a new method was developed in which the pigments were extracted with organic solvents after addition of 10 N KOH to the intact cells, followed by neutralization. These pigments were also extracted after treatment with achromopeptidase, but not with lysozyme. The extracted pigments separated into two main spots by TLC (48.6% and 22.6%), and were confirmed to be carotenoids by chemical tests. The two major pigments had 13 conjugated double bonds as determined from the main maximum wavelength of the light absorption spectra. Their molecular weights were determined to be 740 and 722 by mass spectrometry. The mass spectra of their TMS-derivatives revealed that they contained four and three tertiary OH groups, respectively. Confirming their identical light and IR spectra, these pigments were determined to be bacterioruberin and monoanhydrobacterioruberin, respectively, the characteristic carotenoids of halophilic bacteria. The existence of these pigments in bacteria other than halobacteria provides interesting new evidence on the distribution of these compounds.

    Notes: Abstract When a weak shock wave reflects from wedges its reflection pattern does not appear to be a simple Mach reflection. This reflection pattern is known to be von Neumann Mach reflection in which a Mach stem can not necessarily be straight. In this paper the local change of the Mach stem curvature was experimentally and numerically investigated. A distinct triple point, at which the curvature becomes infinite as appears in a simple Mach reflection, was not observed but the Mach stem curvature became a maximum between foot of the Mach stem and a point, P1, at which an incident shock met with a reflected shock. Maximum curvature point P2 and P1 do not coincide for small wedge angles and tend to merge over a certain wedge angle. Experimental results agreed with numerical results. The trajectory angle of P2 was found to be expressed well by Whitham's shock-shock angle.

    Notes: Abstract Pressureless-sintered (PLS) SiC was joined to Nb by solid state bonding in a vacuum. The joining strength of the PLS SiC/Nb joint increases to the saturated value of 108 MPa with increasing joining pressure at a joining condition of 1673 K and 7.2 ks. This saturated value of PLS SiC/Nb joint is higher than that of the reaction sintered (RS) SiC/Nb joint. The strength of SiC itself affects the strength of the SiC/Nb joint. The high stability of the intermediate phase Nb5Si3 in the interface at elevated temperature leads to the high heat resistance of the joint. The thickness of the intermediate phase Nb5Si3 in the PLS SiC/Nb system is lower than that of the RS SiC/Nb system at a constant joining time, although the activation energy, 452 kJ mol−1, of growth for the phase in the PLS SiC/Nb system is almost the same as the RS SiC/Nb system, 456 kJ mol−1. The rate constant of the growth for the phase in the PLS SiC/Nb system is lower than that in the RS SiC/Nb system. The excess silicon in RS SiC promotes the formation of the Nb5Si3 phase at the interface between SiC and Nb.

    Notes: Abstract A convenient non-destructive method for the determination of low level210Pb and226Ra with an ordinary high-purity Ge-detector is presented. The ordinary Ge-detectors used in this work were available to measure 46.5 keV γ-rays of210Pb. These detectors were also useful for the non-destructive analysis of low-level226Ra in lime-stone and calcium chemicals when a stream of nitrogen gas was maintained around the detectors. By this method, measurements could be carried out not only for210Pb and226Ra but also for other γ-emitting radionuclides simultaneously, using the same detector. The detection limits of about 1 Bq per sample for210Pb and about 0.05 Bq per sample for226Ra, respectively, were estimated, when the samples were counted for 1–2 days.
