    Notes: Abstract The catalytic activity of the proton forms of zeolite β and ZSM-5 are compared for the conversion of acetone. Zeolite β demonstrates markedly enhanced selectivity to isobutene and selectivities of 〉80% can be achieved for conversions up to 65%. In contrast high selectivities to isobutene with ZSM-5 can be attained only at very low conversions (≤5%).

    Notes: Abstract The aromatization of propane is investigated for Ga2O3, H-ZSM-5 and Ga2O3/H-ZSM-5 catalysts, and the results are discussed for a series of ZSM-5 catalysts containing varying SiO2/Al2O3 ratios. It is apparent that on addition of a gallium phase to H-ZSM-5, the yield of methane is significantly decreased. These results are discussed with respect to the mechanism of formation of the initial reaction product from propane. It is proposed that the synergy observed between the gallium compound and the zeolite can be explained in terms of a mechanism in which the role of the gallium phase is to induce C-H bond polarization in the propane, which leads to attack via the Bronsted acid sites of the zeolite, which leads to initial C-H bond cleavage occurring.

    Notes: Abstract Critics have condemned English Romantic tragedies as a series of poor imitations of Renaissance tragedy. This paper tests such “literary-critical” questions through statistical comparisons of ten plays from each group. The measures chosen give evidence of a strong and consistent difference between the groups, going beyond historical changes in the language. The Romantic tragedies are more expository; the Renaissance ones include more commonplace interactions between characters. The later plays do not show the marked variations in function-word frequencies of their predecessors. Of the Renaissance plays, Shakespeare's show the closest affinity to the Romantic tragedies, and the most telling contrasts.

    Notes: Abstract Chrysophyte algae produce siliceous resting cysts (stomatocysts) that are becoming an increasingly useful class of paleoecological indicator microfossils. This paper provides a review of the role that stomatocysts play in the life cycle and reproductive ecology of freshwater planktonic chrysophytes. Such information provides paleolimnologists with greater insight into the ecology of the vegetative, planktonic growth phase of species contributing stomatocysts to lacustrine microfossil assemblages. Specific chrysophyte reproductive characteristics discussed include: temporal dynamics of vegetative growth and encystment, cyst induction, cyst survivorship, germination requirements and recruitment strategies. This information serves as an introduction to a special issue of the Journal of Paleolimnology which is dedicated to the ‘Application of Chrysophyte Stomatocysts in Paleolimnology’.

    Notes: Abstract The pollination biology of a population of 250 Yucca elata (Liliaceae) plants was studied in southern New Mexico. Yucca elata and the prodoxid yucca moth Tegeticula yuccasella have a mutualistic association that is essential for the successful sexual reproduction of both species. However, a wide range of other invertebrate species visit flowers during the day and at night. Our aim was to quantify the role of yucca moths and other invertebrate visitors in pollination and fruit set, using manipulative field experiments. Inflorescences were bagged during the day or night (N=12 inflorescences) to restrict flower visitors to either nocturnal or diurnal groups. Yucca moths were active exclusively nocturnally during the flowering period and thus did not visit inflorescences that were unbagged during the day. None of the 4022 flowers exposed only to diurnal visitors set fruit, whereas 4.6% of the 4974 flowers exposed only to nocturnal visitors (including yucca moths) produced mature fruit. The proportion of flowers producing fruit in the latter treatment was not significantly different from unbagged control inflorescences. In a series of experimental manipulations we also determined that: (1) flowers opened at dusk and were open for two days on average, but were only receptive to pollen on the first night of opening; (2) pollen must be pushed down the stigmatic tube to affect pollination; and (3) most plants require out-cross pollination to produce fruit. The combination of these results strongly suggests that yucca moths are the only species affecting pollination in Y. elata, and that if another species was to affect pollination, it would be a rare event.

    Notes: Summary The diets of five syntopic species of Ctenotus were examined over a two-year period on a 60 ha spinifex grassland site in central Australia. The aims of the study were to test predictions that termites were an important part of the food web for syntopic Ctenotus in spinifex grasslands, and to examine seasonal changes in prey use and dietary overlap between the species. Environmental conditions during the first season of the study were dry resulting in generally low invertebrate abundance. In contrast the second season was relatively moist and overall invertebrate abundance was higher than in the first season. Diets of five species of Ctenotus contained a range of terrestrial prey although one species (C. pantherinus) was relatively termite-specialized at all times. Dietary overlap at the ordinal level between the species was generally higher during dry periods when prey abundance was low, and higher for species-pairs that were similar in body size. During the driest period of the study most species of Ctenotus ate a high proportion of termite prey which accounted for the high dietary overlap. However, each species of Ctenotus consumed different genera or foraging guilds of termites. The results suggest that most of these lizards were opportunistic in their selection of prey but that during dry periods when prey are scarce, termites may play a significant role in supporting a high α-diversity of Ctenotus.

    Notes: Summary In this paper we study the extrinsic geometry of convex polyhedral surfaces in three-dimensional hyperbolic spaceH 3. We obtain a number of new uniqueness results, and also obtain a characterization of the shapes of convex polyhedra inH 3 in terms of a generalized Gauss map.     Notes: Abstract To determine the relationship between invertase gene expression and glucose and fructose accumulation in ripening tomato fruit, fruit vacuolar invertase cDNA and genomic clones from the cultivated species, Lycopersicon esculentum cv. UC82B, and a wild species, Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium, were isolated and characterized. The coding sequences of all cDNA clones examined are identical. By comparison to the known amino acid sequence of mature L. esculentum fruit vacuolar invertase, a putative signal sequence and putative amino-terminal and carboxy-terminal propeptides were identified in the derived amino acid sequence. Of the residues 42% are identical with those of carrot cell wall invertase. A putative catalytic site and a five-residue motif found in carrot, yeast, and bacterial invertases are also present in the tomato sequence. Minor differences between the nucleotide sequences of the genomic clones from the two tomato species were found in one intron and in the putative regulatory region. The gene appears to be present in one copy per haploid genome. Northern analysis suggests a different temporal pattern of vacuolar invertase mRNA levels during fruit development in the two species, with the invertase mRNA appearing at an earlier stage of fruit development in the wild species. Nucleotide differences found in the putative regulatory regions may be involved in species differences in temporal regulation of this gene, which in turn may contribute to observed differences in hexose accumulation in ripening fruit.
