Notes: Abstract The densities and the ultrasonic speeds of the aqueous solutions of 2-(2-hexyloxyethoxy)ethanol (C6E2) were measured over the entire range of mole fractions at 5°C. Excess molar volumes V E were readily calculated from the densities. The densities, in combination with the ultrasonic speeds, furnish estimates of the molar (and excess molar) isentropic compressibilities K S and the deviations u D of the ultrasonic speeds from the values calculated for ideal mixtures. Radical changes in the mole fraction derivatives of the excess molar properties of the (C6E2 + water) system, in the vicinity of an amphiphile mole fraction of 0.003, indicate that C6E2 like C6E3 is capable of micelle formation. Our data have been compared with those reported earlier for (C4E2 +, C2E2 +, and C6E3 + water). We have employed both mass action and pseudophase approaches to data analysis, together with the four-segment model approach.

Notes: Abstract The free energy of some models of aqueous bolaform electrolytes have been calculated at the Debye-Hückel limiting law plus B 2 level of approximation. The repulsive forces are modeled by hard spheres or hard ellipsoids. The charges are placed either at the center of the sphere or at the foci of the ellipsoid. Parameters were chosen to approximate the size and shape of sodium and calcium p-benzenedisufonate and sodium 4,4′-biphenyldisulfonate. The results show that contrary to the standard explanations for the unusual properties of bolaform electrolytes, separating the charges has little effect on the excess free energy. It is also shown that changing from a sphere to an ellipse has little effect on the excess free energy. The most important determinates of the properties of these salts are the sizes of the ions. Agreement of the model calculations with experimental results is reasonable considering the simplicity of the models.

Notes: Abstract Adsorption of palladium (II) and copper (II) salts onto the controlled pore glass CPG-240, in the presence of water, yields a supported aqueous phase Wacker oxidation catalyst. Conversions of 1-heptene to 2-heptanone of up to 24% under batch conditions are observed. The activity and selectivity of the catalysts are sensitive to water content, oxygen pressure and temperature.

Notes: Abstract Metallic tin was detected using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) after H2 reduction of 5%Pt/SnO2, 5%Pt-5%Sn/SiO2, and 5%Pt-29%Sn/Al2O3. However, no metallic tin could be detected in PtSn/Al2O3 catalysts with tin loadings up to 5 wt%. These findings indicate that tin reducibility depends on the extent of interaction between SnO x and the substrate. Hexane reaction studies indicate that metallic tin poisons all reforming reaction channels regardless of the support.

Notes: Abstract 27Al double rotation NMR (DOR) spectroscopy is used to investigate structural changes in the framework of several aluminophosphate molecular sieves upon adsorption of water. The shapes, widths, and positions of the spectral lines yield information on the aluminum environments, adsorption sites, and degree of structural disorder undergone upon water adsorption.

Notes: Abstract TEM pictures show that the MoS2 of a sulfided NiMo-alumina catalyst preferentially agglomerates at steps of the alumina support. Catalyst samples aged during direct coal liquefaction either 2 or 26 days show single MoS2 layers at steps of the support, and the length of the agglomerates is about the same in the two catalysts. The data is not consistent with models for the catalyst structure that include multi-layers of MoS2.

    Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology
Notes: Abstract Pyridine adsorption on sulfated zirconia (SO 2− 4 -ZrO2) provides evidence for infrared bands characteristic of both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites. Samples treated at 100°C retain water and have a higher fraction of Brønsted acidity than when the sample is treated at 400°C. The fraction of Brønsted acid sites observed for SO 2− 4 -ZrO2 is the same in the presence or absence of supported Pt. Based on pyridine adsorption, exposure to gaseous hydrogen at 100 or 150°C did not significantly alter the fraction of Brønsted acid sites following the exposure to hydrogen.

Notes: Abstract XPS data indicate that Pt in a highly chlorided (5–10% Cl) Pt-Al2O3 catalyst is present in a metallic form, and is not chlorided. Surface chloride concentration decreases following reduction in hydrogen; exposure to oxygen increases the surface chloride concentration. In contrast, reduction of chloride containing Pt-SiO2 catalyst dramatically reduces the chloride level; in addition, treatment with CCl4 appears to reoxidize at least some of the Pt in the Pt-SiO2 catalyst.

Notes: Abstract For a series of catalysts containing 1 wt. % Pt and Sn∶Pt ratios ranging from ca. 1 to 8, the only crystalline alloy phase detected by XRD was SnPt (1∶1). The XRD intensity of lines for the SnPt (1∶1) alloy phase increase with increasing Sn∶Pt ratios, indicating the presence of unalloyed Pt in the samples containing low tin loadings.
