Notes: Abstract This paper presents some test and analysis results for a spot welded joint subjected to tensile and alternate load. The effect of sheet rigidity on the tensile strength and fatigue life of the spot welded joint is studied by using the stress intensity factorsK I,K II,K III and an “effective stress intensity factor” Kϕθmax calculated by the finite element method for crack around the nugget. The results show that the “effective stress intensity factor” Kϕθmax is an essential parameter for estimating the fatigue life of the spot welded joint.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an orientation-based representation for planar curves and shapes. The new representation can uniquely represent all types, of planar shapes, be it convex, nonconvex, polygonal, smoothly curved, or piecewise smooth shapes. It is based on a new parameterization, theabsolute integral orientation. This representation is invariant under translation and rotation. The absolute integral orientation is a parameter invariant under scaling. As a result, matching of similar shapes (i.e., determination of the relative orientation and the scaling factor) using the absolute integral orientation as the parameter is easier than using the arclength as the parameter. In addition, the new representation has the feature of adaptive sampling, making it more compact and efficient than arc-length-based representations.

Notes: Summary Co-reduction of mixed metal ions of platinum-rhodium or rhodium-gold by refluxing its alcohol ic solution in presence of a protective polymer results in a corresponding stable bimetallic sol, which in turn interacts with a suspension of silica gel, bearing thioether ligand, to give supported bimetallic catalysts. The TEM and XRD measurements indicate the formation of the bimetallic alloy clusters. The sols are used as catalysts for the selective partial hydrogenation of cis, cis-1.5-cyclooctadiene to cyclooctene. The bimetallic sol catalyst PVP-Pt-Rh shows an activity which is about twice as that of the monometallic sol PVP-Rh.
