Notes: Abstract Synthesis and superconductivity of a new 1222-type layered cuprate (Tl1−x Nb x ) Sr2(Nd1−y Ce y )2Cu2O z have been studied. The structure of this cuprate is directly related to that of Nb-1222 NbSr2(Nd, Ce)2Cu2O z with tetragonal body-center lattice. Partial substitution of Tl for Nb in Nb-1222 phase improves its superconductivity. (Tl1−x Nb x ) Sr2(Nd0.75Ce0.25)2Cu2O z samples prepared by the typical procedure exhibit superconductivity withT c of 30–40 K. Effects of Tl and Nb on superconductivity of this cuprate are briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The three-nucleon system is studied within the multi-configuration resonating-group method. The model space is spanned byp+d,p+d′, and their associated pseudo-inelastic configurations. The results show that, at lower energies less than about 15 MeV, the calculatedp+d differential scattering and total reaction cross sections agree well with experiment, suggesting that the use of pseudo-inelastic configurations can yield an adequate description of deuteron direct-breakup processes. At higher energies, the agreement is less satisfactory, owing mainly to the adoption of a relatively small number of pseudo-inelastic configurations in our formulation. Thep+d inter-cluster interactions are found to be appreciably odd-evenL-dependent and are characteristically different in channel spinS=3/2 and 1/2states. Specific distortion effects of the deuteron cluster are also studied. For relative orbital angular momentumL=0, these effects turn out to be small in theS=3/2 state but are quite large in theS=1/2 state.

Notes: Abstract Bremsstrahlung double cross sections for α + α collisions are computed with the wave functions obtained by using a single-configuration resonating-group method (RGM). With no adjustable parameters, the calculated values are shown to agree well with experiment. For reliable results, it is found that the intercluster interaction must yield a good fit to the empirical phase shifts in the energy region where relatively sharp resonance states exist. A simplified procedure (A-RGM), in which the antisymmetrization of the wave function is only approximately taken into account, has also been adopted to consider the bremsstrahlung problem. Comparisons between RGM and A-RGM results yield the useful conclusion that fitting empirical phase shifts alone is not a sufficient criterion to ensure accuracy in the bremsstrahlung cross sections and a proper description of the nuclear system in the region of strong cluster overlap is also important.

Notes: Abstract The properties of the 10-nucleon system are investigated with a multiconfiguration resonating-group method, which consists of α+6Li,d+8Be,d+8Be*, and α+6Li* cluster configurations, where6Li* and8Be* represent the rotational excited-states of6Li and8Be with orbital angular momentum equal to 2. The results show that, among reactions initiated from the α+6Li incident channel, the inelastic-scattering process6Li(α,α′)6Li* dominates. The α-transfer reactions6Li(α,d)8Be and6Li(α,d)8Be* have smaller cross sections, but still contribute, on the average, to about one-third of the α+6Li total reaction cross sections in the centre-of-mass energy region between 12 and 24 MeV. The calculated α+6Li total reaction cross section at 27 MeV is equal to around 70% of the empirical value obtained by analyzing α+6Li differential scattering cross-section data. This is a respectable amount, considering the complexity of the problem and that no adjustable parameters are involved in the calculation. Based on the findings of this and previous investigations, some general criteria which govern the importance of cluster-transfer processes in light nuclear systems have also been obtained. These criteria should be very useful in qualitatively understanding the behaviour of other systems that have hitherto not been studied with the multi-configuration resonating-group method.

Notes: Abstract The properties of the six-nucleon system are examined with a multi-configuration resonating-group method consisting of thed+α configuration, thep+5He andn+5Li configurations, and deuteron pseudo-inelastic configurations. The main purpose is to study the reaction mechanisms in this system. The results obtained are quite satisfactory, with the calculatedd+α total reaction cross sections equal to around 90% of the empirically determined values. The one-nucleon transfer process turns out to be significantly more important than the deuteron direct-breakup process; however, the latter process must still be properly taken into consideration, since it does contribute to about one third of thed+α total reaction cross section. The process of one-nucleon transfer is shown to occur mainly in the peripheral region, while the process of deuteron direct-kreakup is found to take place predominantly in the interior region of the compound nucleus. The convergence property with respect to the number of deuteron pseudo-inelastic configurations has also been investigated. Here it is found that, with the dominant configurations included, the number of such configurations required can be rather small, which is an important finding because it greatly simplifies the computational aspects of multi-configuration resonating-group calculations.

Notes: Abstract Three small superconducting magnets with active and passive shields that produce confined magnetic fields in low temperature cryostats have been designed and built. The design of these magnets uses both on and off-axis field calculations which are fed back to an optimization algorithm. These design principles and construction techniques are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the melting pressure and constant-volume pressure of solid3He have been made in the vicinity of the various magnetic-ordering transitions. Data have been obtained at several magnetic fields for both the low-field phase and the high-field phase, with particular attention given to the region of the polycritical point. The absence of a latent heat indicates that the transition from the paramagnetic to the high-field phase is second order or λ type. A spin-wave velocity of 6.95 cm/sec was obtained from theT 4 temperature dependence of the melting pressure in the high-field phase forB=0.495 T. These data provide the entropy and volume discontinuities as functions of field along the first-order low-field phase boundary. The volume dependence of the transition temperatures has been extracted from these and other data.

Notes: Abstract A new 1223-type (Tl, V)-based superconducting layered cuprate (Tl1−x V x ) Sr2Ca2Cu3O9 withx=0.25 and 0.50 has been successfully synthesized in the nearly-pure form and identified by powder X-ray diffration analyses. An excessive quantity of Tl is necessary for the preparation of the (Tl, V)-based 1223-type compound. Resistance and ac susceptibility measurements showed that the new (Tl, V)-based 1223 cuprate exhibits Tc above 110 K.
